Regular 93 Billerica | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED KOM - 2010-05-01 10:46 AM I am back in sunny RI. Happy to be home and enjoyed the time alone time with my daughter. Now it is back to reality. Also ended up my trip with some GI issues. A little under the weather today so I will be taking it easy this weekend. Not sure I can be away from a bathroom for much of a ride or run. We'll see. My daughter (the one who just came back with me) is running her first half mary tomorrow in Providence. She asked for the registration as a Christmas present. I'll be out cheering her on as well as several friends in the race. Let me know if you have anyone running who needs some support out there tomorrow. Have a great day all. GI issues from Mexico?? I hope you feel better. Good luck to your daughter. |

Since this group is heavly Mass related, I will post this here. MWRA has a boil water out for most towns east of Weston due to a water main break. Seems like about 25 communities are effected. Double check the news to be sure, but I wanted to help get the news out

Or at least could some one post who is on the team so I can add them to my friends list. Mucho gracias. Yup still in sunny Mexico. Desperately seeking a pool today. Daughter and I plan to crash a swanky hotel and just buy drinks so they will let us stay! Oh sure. Rub it in! I'm still in rainy, windy Idaho, headed to even colder Utah. I'll let the vastly more experienced peeps here explain the 10% rule. Also, I think when Josh does his spreadsheet for the IM that will have everyone listed. I'd do it, but I'll be away from the computer until Saturday. So, someone else needs to give Josh crap while I'm gone. We wouldn't want him getting too comfortable! (He IS more scary now though... so be a little careful) No computer, I hope you will be OK. Whew! I made it. I almost had to duck into an internet cafe for a hit though |

I'm hoping I have enough time to write this little ditty before it goes off again. The monitor keeps going black and I think we need a new one. I will try to update my training as well if time allows. How is everyone doing? the heat is actually crazy up here this weekend. The Mountain Goat was today with about 2100 people running. Veteran 235 eastleigh | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Hi everyone, Thank for all your inspires for my race yesterday. Unfortunately I decided not to race, here in the uk we have had some lovely weather for the last 3 weeks but being a bank holiday weekend it was no suprise the weather took a turn for the worst. What with this being a hills marathon climbing over 1000ft 3 times in torrential rain and sleet i decided i did not fancy driving 2 hours to the race for a beasting by the elements. Instead of racing i decided saturday morning I would meet up with my rugby team who had gone off on our end of season club tour to devon 4 hours away to play 2 games, one on sat and one on sunday. I got there missing the start of the game but played 60 mins, then we went out painting the town red and dragged orselves to the 2nd game on sunday morning. I took my wetsuit with me as it is coastal but unfortunately i would have cost me £4 to park just to swim for 20 mins so i did not swim in the end. Unfortunatyely I had my left ankle and achillies stamped on in the 2nd game and had to hop off the pitch after 25 mins, so today i am sat icing it back home. Slightly concerned as i have 2 races in 2 weeks time but worst case scenario i will still race but not do the run. I knew there was a risk of getting injured and hey presto, thats happened so i am not going to beat myself up about it, whats done is done, so onwards with the swimming this week if nothing else. Thanks again for all your inspires, i hope you all had great weekends too. T |

I will work on the spreadsheet today. As far as the walking and other exercises go, I will think of something that incorporates all activities into mileage or hours or something so nobody kills themselves trying to do 112 miles on the bike when they typically do 20. Just start keeping track today.

I did my first Bike/Run brick the other day and had some crazy cramping in the calves for about the first km of the run. I stopped a few times to stretch, and it seemed to ease up - but what can I do in the future to prevent or lessen the severity of the cramps? Stac Ok, I am going to guess that being in Alberta, heat was not an issue yet. I bring this up because as the heat goes up so dose cramping. I tend to load up on "salt tabs" with magnesium and potasium to keep the stomach settled and the crampping at bay. Now for a more realistic suggestion for your brick. First "save some for the run". Be it a brick or a race, you always need a little something left for the run. Going all out on the bike will leave your legs full of lactic acid and prone to crampping. Assuming you were conservitive on the bike, you need to spin out your legs before you get off the bike. What I mean is the last 1/2 to mile of a ride, drop to an easier gear and spin at a higher rate. This takes some of the pressure off your legs and helps flush out some of the lactic acid that you built up durring the ride. I have also seen people make a habit of going on a 10 minute run after every ride to get the body used to the shock of moving from one sport to the other. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Expert 819 In the Shadow of the Big House | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED I agree with Ontherun in that it probably wasn't the heat yet and doubtful that your electrolytes are out of balance, but watch that as the season progresses. I don't know that you ever can really eliminate crampy feeling after a hard bike to run, but practicing bricks a lot certainly seemed to help for me. Also, spinning down the last Km or so helps. That being said, when I started the run for my HIM last fall I thought my calves might actually explode for about the first Km. I got through it. You can too |

Just adjust your pace to get though the cramping and then start picking it up after you work through it. |

Thanks for the input everyone, and no - the heat was definitely NOT a factor it was only 11 degrees Celsius...I did ride pretty hard the first 8k into a nasty head wind, uphill, so that must have had something to do with it ;-) I will keep you posted on the progress as race day is fast approaching...calling for snow again tonight, so hopefully it's gone again by the weekend! |

It dawned on me yesterday that my truck is going to Alaska, leaving me with no way to haul my bike around. I need to get a bike rack for my car. Would you recommend a roof rack or a trunk rack, or what? |
