With my situation I will most likely have to take a month off of work this summer - probably in August. I'm thinking I can't do a cross-country bike tour to occupy myself though. I AM going to see if my LBS will hire me part time though. It would be my first civilian job in 11 years! That would be awesome. You are set for re-enlistment though right? You staying in SD area? Short story: yes. Abridged long story: I'm actually leaving "Active Duty" at the end of July-ish and will be in the Reserves. My new job (which is basically the same as my current one) is just an "Activation" so while I'll still be in the Reserves, I'll be full-time just as if I were on Active Duty. Administratively, the only real difference is that I'll be paid out of a different pot of money. However, before I can become an activated Reservist I have to take a 30 day break. And THAT'S where my plans for being a bike shop bum come in. That would be very sweet ![]() I hope the bike shop bum plan comes to fruition for you. What a sweet 30 days that would be. Dude, you ain't kidding. I'm just afraid I won't end up making any money after being surrounded by so many sweet potential upgrades! |

Dude, you ain't kidding. I'm just afraid I won't end up making any money after being surrounded by so many sweet potential upgrades! Well just explain to them that you want your money to go to the bike that you like and work for them off and on until it is paid off! Aren't you getting any leave money back from unused time??? - LMAO Yeah, I'll be selling back some unused leave before I leave active duty. What I'm worried about is that everyone I know who's taken this particular job has had a hell of a time getting their pay started (one guy took two months). That said, I'm being mindful of my VERY anemic nest egg right now ![]() |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So the 4th grade picnic. They hold it at the community center in a neighboring town, but still in our school district. There was cotton candy, soft pretzel sticks, snow cones, popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, and other munchies. Then there was volleyball, kickball, the bounce castle, a giant blow up obstacle course, tug-a-war, water wars, a bean bag game where there were pictures of the teachers in the holes and the kids threw the bean bags at the teachers. You could get your hair and/or your face painted, and you could get temp tattoos. The biggest hit of the day was the water slide. A huge piece of plastic covering the side of a hill with the fire company there with their tanker truck supplying water for the slide. There was a small culvert at the bottom of the slide and that's where you ended up at. The longer the day went the deeper and muddier the water got! There was constantly a long line for this thing. Near the end of the day my friend Sandi, and one of the teachers went down the slide. I didn't see they were going in time so I didn't get to go with them. The teacher wanted to go again but Sandi said she didn't. I set my phone on video and handed it to her. I went down the slide with the teacher. I snagged my hand in a hole near the bottom and that really slowed me down. I went over to Sandi and she didn't get it on video. I told her she'd have to go again with me. So I handed my phone to my husband and back to the top we went (yes, we butted in line). They were closing it up, had to get the kids rinsed and give them a little time to dry before going back to school. The person in charge told use we could do it though. They got all the kids down to the bottom, hosed them off, then tried to get them to the side. Then us 3 ladies went down the slide and ended with a SPLASH! We got lots of cheers. It was really fun! My friend headed home, the teacher said she should have known better and brought clothes, but she had to go back to school like that. I had clothes with me to bike home, so I went and changed. It was a really fun picnic! Congratulations 4th graders! |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Then the rest of my day... After the water slide I went and changed into my biking clothes. It was mega hot here today so when I was ready to head out I rode up the street to a convenience store and bought a couple bottles of water and a bottle of gatorade and I filled my bottles in the parking lot. I headed out, the way my husband and a friend of his told me. I wanted to get off the main road as soon as possible and they told me right outside of town, after I cross the bridge to hang a left. I'd climb up a hill then at the Y go... I couldn't remember what they said. I went right. As it turns out I should have gone left. No problem, I rode for a couple of miles then hung a left. I ended up right where the other road came out anyway. I kept going and had about 13 miles in then I was on another main road. I don't ride it for long, but it was really busy today. I stayed as far right as I could but there was rubble everywhere. I felt the back of my bike start to react weird and as soon as I turned off the main road I looked down and I had a flat. I didn't want to make myself at home in someone's driveway or front yard, and there was no shade, so I walked my bike about half a mile off the road where there was shade, and a place I could work on my tire. While I'm walking I am really getting hot and not feeling great. I tried to call my husband, no response. I tried my parents, my dad is retired, nothing. Tried my in-laws, nobody was home. A few minutes later I tried the in-laws again and my MIL answered. I told her if she heard from Donnie to have him call me. Got the wheel off, tube out, new tube in, tire back on the rim and used 1 of my 2 CO2 cartridges to blow it up, and there was a bulge in the tire. So I let the air out. I checked my phone and I had missed my husband call. I called him back and told him where I was. I told him I was trying to fix it but I was running low on supplies. He said he'd head my direction, I'm about 10 miles from home, and if he saw me he'd just turn around and head back. I noticed I didn't have the tire the whole way around the rim. I fixed that and used my second CO2 to pump it up. Still a bulge, but smaller. I got a drink a took a seat. My husband got there in a few minutes and picked us up. When I got home I let the air out and I don't think I had the tube in smoothly, I think it was pinched near the valve. I pumped it up again with the hand pump and everything looks good now. I did get 13.85 miles in before I called it a day. Tomorrow is another day. |
