I haven't sat down and committed to any kind of schedule for the 2011 season. Reading a lot your planned schedule races makes me feel like the slacker but here pretty soon I'll have it down. So far I am definitely committed to two races:

June- 70.3 Eagleman
August- IM Louisville

All I have to do now is build around it... we'll see what I can come up by the end of the week..

cheers,

thomas

Rocket City marathon 12/11/10
Austin marathon (training run)  02/20
Boston marathon 04/18
Buffalo Springs 1/2 IM 06/26
IMKY 08/28
Austin - longhorn 1/2 IM 10/23

Ok...this isn't triathlon related, but I thought you might find it funny.
I sent this to my fellow third grade teachers. In the subject line I wrote. "I just want you to know how smart I am".

Ok, I have a student in my classroom with basically an arm and ½ and she’s very often rather slow in getting around. Her name is Evie, and if you don’t know her, surely you have seen her around. Anyway, I was trying desperately to get her down the hall and to the front doors where the entire class was waiting anxiously to get on the bus and go snowshoeing. I’m doing my best to  get her boots on, zip her coat, etc. I’m feelin’ the pressure. She told me that in her bag are her gloves. I searched around and I pulled out one thin glove and one mitten, and I said, “Evie, what’s goin’ on here you have one glove and one mitten and they are both different and I can’t find any more? Where’s your other glove or mitten?”

Now, I’m not saying this in an angry way, but in a let’s get out the door kind of way.

At this point she says in her soft, forgiving voice, I don’t need another one.

DUH! At that moment, in my mind I was presented with a gold trimmed certificate reading, “You are an Idiot” on it.

I said, “Yeah, I’m pretty stupid aren’t I?”

She didn’t say anything…which means, “Yes, but I’m not going to be the one to tell you.”

I quickly helped her to her feet and she was finally on her way…one mitten and all.

Peace,

~Sam

I probably should have qulified that story by saying Evie is a very positive and fun-loving girl who thought the situation was funny (later). I don't see her differently from my other students so...I goofed.

I'll be at both.   Wasn't really planning on doing an IM when I registered for Eagleman.  But couldn't resist Louisville.

FLAG ON THE PLAY....

The work related post I put out is better suited for facebook, not for a triathlon forum. I guess I got too comfortable.
Upon further review, the penalty stands.
Attemps were made to delete, but to no avail.

Sam

I liked the story. Put's things into perspective.

Back to the triathlon stuff. Temps here have been in the single digits recently and I abhor the treadmill. So my running has been suffering a bit. Today I'm going to head out and try not "freeze my lungs" at lunch.

No worries Sam,

I think all of us have a common bond and stories like that kind of lighten the mood and bring a more human side to each of us.  You can post stories like that anytime you like.  It can't all be about the Ironman, can it?   Wait, thats wjat was so funny about that youtube video.

Peter

do it brother! ....

a couple of years ago I found myself doing a lot of running in the treadmill as I was putting in the miles for my first HI at the gym. There was this day that I met some guy while doing laps in the pool and we started to talk about triathlons and the training and the amount of work that goes into it, etc.. he asked me about my running and I told him that I had been logging the miles in the dreadmill. He looked at me with a smirk and said, " what are you, a gerbil?"- honestly, since that day a couple of years ago, I can honestly say I have only logged in a 45 min run and all because we were having a snow storm.

Awesome.  We all have moments like that.  It sounds like she's wise already.

Thanks for sharing.

OK  Question for y'all (as they say here in TX).

I belong to a gym which is only 2 miles from my house, but seems really hard to get to somehow.  I'm dedicating myself to going 3 x week for swimming (starting next week ).  But would like to add in some weights as well.  I can't find time or motivation to get to the gym more than the time to swim.  So.... lifting weights before or after swimming.  Does the workout suffer.  Advise please.

Thanks, nancy

Nancy-
My opinion on your quandry would be to lift after your swim workout. You may find yourself using lighter weights if you are fatigued, but so what. However, if you go into your swim workout fatigued from lifting, then your form, quality, or quanity may suffer and that's not good.
So, hit the weights after your swim.
Just my two cents.
Peace,
~Sam

Nancy,

I am a runner and a Tri -wanna be.  My swim is finally coming around but I have found that if I do weights before my swim, I suffer a bit.  I only do weights after my swim.  It's hard giving up the running time for swimming or weights but have decided that is the sacrifice I have to make if I want to be an "Ironman" (wishing I could sound like that youtube video).

Indoor vs outdoor running
It was in the negative digits this morning here so I decided to go to a spinning class.  I don't like the treadmills but ice forces me inside more than the temperature.  I am lucky that I have an indoor track I can use at Purdue so that when conditions get really bad, I can use the track.  I do hate the treadmill but have found that if I get 3-4 other running friends on the treadmill at one time, it's tolerable.

I am with you on not running at all outside if there are neg #'s or ice on the ground as well.
Training for an ironman can be a lonely journey and if you find a group or a couple of people to train with, it certainly makes it bette. I do enjoy training (running and biking)with others. Like you said, it makes it tolerable. Laughing

After searching far and wide, I think I finally found the right training plan for me. This month's triathlete magazine had a 20-week program that fits into my schedule. I printed out all the ironman training plans here on BT and the one from Triathlete magazine and spent 3 hours analyzing and reviewing them. I have 2 toddlers and a husband in the Army so time management is big for me. I am super excited to start the plan in April!

Any suggestions on how to prepare for the bike portion of the race? I live in the north chicago suburbs and there are very few hills around here. Thanks.

Ride the Ironman Wisconsin course. They are similar.

Jillian- I like the idea of that program as well. It is one that has helped me make some adjustments on my plan.

...hawk- You just screwed is all.  Just kidding. Can you reasonably drive out of town to get to some rolling terrain? (I'm thinking during the summer months).

Really considering Muncie 70.3,  looks like the best fit and seems to keep popping up here.

I'm by no means a biking authority.  But if it were me, I'd get on trainer in big gear once or twice a week to simulate the hills.

Good luck!

Ironman has recently took over the race (used to be the Muncie Endurathon) but I believe its the same group of people locally running the race so should still be a great race. I've not personally done the 1/2 distance race (just the sprint) but Ive lived in this area my whole life and can tell ya its a good race course....I signed up for it 2 days ago as a warm up to IMLOU.
