Happy New Years Everybody!

Today I will start counting down to my goal--first sprint triathlon in March. I usually have a wonderful eating regiment throughout the year since i was trying to lose and maintain my weight. But this year, I took some "liberties" during the holidays (a little more sweets and potato chips than I usually eat and not enough Greek yogurt and fresh vegetables). Today after a one hour jog, I could felt sluggish through the run and after the run. I've concluded that although I was able to maintain my weight, that food is acting like "fuel" and I've been operating my body on "low-grade gasoline." Does anybody else now what I mean. And, I'd like to know of other food or "fuel" suggestions as I now focus on training.

Thanks,
Sue

I've been using a power tap for about 7 months now.  I love it.  I'm into all the technical stuff, so it's like a brain tease for me...LOL.  But it does wonders for your workouts.  If you like numbers and reaching specific goals, a power meter is awesome.

But if you're the type that just likes to ride...don't really care about the numbers, or comparing one ride to another...it may not be for you.  It's simply a tool.  It doesn't make you faster or better unless you embrace learing how to effectively use it.

They do run for quite a bit but I think it's a wise investment. In general I like to "just go riding" some of the time (especially the longer rides), but on the shorter rides, where each one has a specific target or purpose, I think I'd more effectively hit them if I was training by power. Hmm... food for thought...

I had the same approach before getting my power tap.  The great thing about using a power meter on long rides though is that you can break your ride up into segments with power goals.  I'll usually try to do at least two 15-25 minute sets within a long ride at a hard steady effort.  So while most of the long ride is at a "just ride" pace...I do have some power focus in there.

j,
I am looking for some threshold bike workouts to try to fit into some of my workouts on the trainer.  What would you suggest?  Today I went for almost an hour and 40 minutes with 2 hard efforts for 00:01:30 and cool for 3 minutes.  these were all out efforts.  I was in the big ring and the smallest cog and mashing as much as I could stand.  I think what I am really asking is, I want to do some lactic workouts but I know next to nothing about how, when or where to put them into a routine.

Dirk,

Easiest workouts to find would likely be in JorgeM's program (since the overall goal of that program is to increase your threshold power).  I like the structure of his workouts.  I've also used the Spinervals DVD, I think it was volume 13 or 14 that focuses on 40k time trial or improving your 1 hour max efforts.

The things I see in common for both is that the actual workout really only needs to be 50-70 minutes.  Spinervals has a longer, but easier warmup and cool down, so theirs lasts about 90 minutes.  The main chunk of the workout is really only about 30-45 minutes.  They almost never ask for all out efforts...more like 5-10 minute steady, but hard efforts, with 1-3 minute recoveries.

I think that doing all out efforts like you were is geared more towards increasing your maximal power output...much like a sprinter would want to have that explosion to the finish line.  They are fun to do though.  I just prefer to do those types of workouts on the open road where I can feel my speed.  I feel like I'm getting ripped off if I'm putting out that kind of effort and not actually going anywhere.

Decent group ride today with my social ride club.  Thursday had a decent short 2 mile run down Alii Drive with minimal calf pain in my Newton's.  A friend and multiple HIM finisher saw me and told me today that my form looked great, so that made me pretty happy.

Big week for me ahead.  Despite being someone who is in the water a decent amount, I have not had any real training for swimming, and have not ever swam any real distance.  I've been in the lineup body boarding for hours, and have had to fight 6'+ surf with nothing to float on for a while, but never swimming far.  Should be fun.  Luckily I have a few strong swimmer friends (sub 24 min 1.5k) who are free!

I hit my recovery week with a brick workout this afternoon.

I had a 45 minute trainer ride and a 4 mile run immediately afterward.  I just had to change from shorts and a t shirt to winter running gear.  Nothing like 2 workouts in 2 climates in 5 minutes.  The air was pretty cold out there too.   The temp was 25 with a wind chill of 14 when I left.  My face was pretty cold but other than that I was pretty good.  I also ran a little faster than planned but I felt pretty good.  My upcoming week's mileage will drop from 18-19 to something like 14 this week.

Melanie,
I am ready to stay off work for another 2 weeks.  I can't believe I have been off work for 17 days already.  I know the normal routine has to come back but I am not ready for it.

For all you warm weather people,
I wish I could have some of that 7 degree weather to ride in.  There's not a chance that I am going to get a ride outside for a while.  I would like to get into some group rides this upcoming season but I will have to get on board with some of LBS's to find out when they start and how to work them in with the training I'll need to do.

Well, it's back to work for me tomorrow and I am not liking it.  It took me a week to get all my planning done and it will take me another week of office work to catch up on all the stuff I have missed since being out.  Oh how I am dreading that alarm clock...........at 5 AM.

Walk/ran 3 miles and biked 7 miles (nice hilly terrain for both).  Friday, I went back to the bike shop where I got my bike and this time, I received much better service.  I've been waiting for my helmet for 2 weeks (I am trying to get one that goes with the color of my bike).  They let me borrow one until mine comes in.  I got some coaching on the shifting, and some advice on the bike vs tri shorts.  Wound up buying a pair of biking shorts - a bit of an expense but definitely worth it.  They made such a difference on my ride today.  No soreness! Laughing She also told me to make sure to rock my hips back on the seat.  That helped, too.

Pistuo, you were correct.  I "played" with the shifting today.  It got better.  I just need to get over being afraid of my bike, like I am going to mess something up.

Got my trainer workout in this morning...even though I didn't feel like doing it.

My cycling legs must be starting to be coming back because the workout wasn't nearly as dreadful as the past 2 weeks.

Going for a short run then masters class after work.

Got in a short ride this afternoon, didn't want to push it considering how sick I was this morning.  Headed back to Tally tomorrow so probably won't get anything in.

Does the wind hurt anyone else's ears when the ride??  I'm definitely going to invest in a headband that covers my ears.

Haven't heard of the wind hurting anyone's ears.  Is it cold where you are...and the cold wind is hurting your ears?

I was wondering the same thing.  Is it an inner ear thing?  I hate to ask a swimmer this but here goes........could it be swimmers ear?  Maybe its just being affected by the additional air moving around it during the rides.

I got an easy recovery swim in tonight but I spent almost as much time talking to other people than actually swimming.  One guy is doing IM Louisville this August and was starting his base back up.  He does an IM once every other year and he's getting back into the cycle.

I did have a few hard sets to make sure I put a little effort into the workout.  6x50 on :50, landing on :40, so I got a decent amount of rest between sets.

It's was about 60* but about low 50* with wind chill. I haven't been swimming for a couple months. My niece has a cold so it may just be I'm coming down with a head cold, which is the last thing I need.
