Fer Cuevas - 2011-02-16 10:19 AM What a set of nice pictures!, beautiful landscape, beautiful weather, where do you live? in paradise? ha ha ha
congrats!!!
The last time I had a ride like that, was the last october in Savannah, GA, in a Saturday morning ride.

Thank you, this place is awesome! Never been to GA, so can't compare.
Where do I live? My suburb is actually called Mermaid Waters, it is right next to Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, Australia... you guessed it, it is paradise (but it rains a lot here...).

I think I'm gonna put Port McQuairie in my IM schedule, I already have a friend to visit, right?Wink

Anytime Ernesto, just register early, this thing sells out in few hours!

Maybe we should all go !!! Huh ! OR NOT!!! Just kidding

You are all welcome here, it is better than on the photos!

The heat has already started to creep up here in Dallas, today I ran at noon very windy and in the mid 70’s, it’s incredible how different it feels from last week. I still need to get used to an extra 25/30 degrees for my upcoming races. The clock is ticking and I’m getting very excited; T-93 days for Ironman Texas 140.6 and T-30 for Ironman Puerto Rico 70.3.

I’m more enthusiastic about the half than the full, I think the latter it’s going to be a suffer fest. Regardless, I’m using PR as a “tune up” race and I’m not putting pressure on myself for a finishing time, especially considering that the run is going to be very hilly, hot and humid.

Speaking about races, can you post your definitive racing schedule?

Heat? It's only February...
So you're racing in a month in Puerto Rico? Sounds like an exciting place!

So far as my schedule:

May 1st   2011 - IM Australia 140.6, Port Macquarie
June 5th 2011 - Gold Coast Marathon (tentatively)

That's all this year, but you never know.

Run data uploaded.

Yes I have noticed some changes.  I seem to be hung up on why my heart rate is so high.  I do notice on the Internet that there seem to be a lot of people that are somewhat fit that have that problem.  One suggested solution was strength training because weak muscles need the heart to pump more blood?  Does that make sense?

I also notice that if I have any sensations in my chest or arms I'm wondering if there's something going on in my body that I don't know about.

I already eat like you've suggested and have for a long time.  I'm a little short on sleep usually during the week, but I get to catch up a little on the weekends.

jdiis - 2011-02-16 9:25 PM Ernesto,

Bike data uploaded.  I did take my resting pulse upon awakening this week.  It was 52.  Tomorrow has to be another run day because it's all I can fit in.  Then I am booked until Sat afternoon, so Friday is a rest day.

So tell me if I can please do that SLOW running again Wink.

BTW, great job on the bike!! no coasting, high turnover and a steady HR. You're a good girl!!

Thanks.  I can follow directions pretty well.  Just keep them coming.  One day at a time, and I'm enjoying the journey!

I finally figured out what quote meant.

The reason that I feel puzzled is that when you did speed on the track, the spread between you max HR and your jog is very little; however, your pace cuts in half between intervals. Your max HR is exactly what’s predictable but your “normal” is quite a bit higher than expected. I’m hoping that when reading the Maffetone’s book you’ll find what the problem could be. I’m inclined to the side of thinking that you have a super developed anaerobic system and a deficient aerobic engine. Kind of like you’ve always been running and cycling too fast. This would also explain the “feeling out of breath” symptom in the pool.

Tomorrow and Sunday, do the bike and the run (long and slow on both) in the same order. Sleep well and keep the turnover high while running and cycling, this helps to work the aerobic fibers in your muscles (red). We’ll leave the speed for the weekdays…

Hey everyone,
It sure is getting alot hotter down here in old CC.  I have been doing alot of night running, and its still sticky.  Overall, I have been feeling pretty good, and alot more confident in my running abilities.  Nowadays, it seems that if i go run for 2-3 miles it feels like im just getting warmed up.  Gotta go for 4 or 6.
This weekend im planning leaving on a camping trip up to the hill country, and will do some biking and running.
Have a great weekend eveyone!

Subject: Caffeine and Heart Rate
What is the thought on caffeine?  Good or bad?  I have one cup of coffee in the morning, half regular and half decaf.  Rarely I'll have a Starbucks or a second cup of regular coffee.

Some of my gels have caffeine and of course chocolate milk and chocolate candy.

Does caffeine cause long term heart rate rise?  Do nutrition-conscious triathletes restrict the amount of caffeine in their diet?

According to Maffetone and others (many) caffeine should be restricted for athletes, mostly when the races are coming. I am bad with coffee, I drink about three or four a day. I don't think it is such a big issue though, it is a proven fact that caffeine actually increases endurance because of the vaso-contriction in the capillaries. Lots of talk around it, everybody has a list of pros and cons.
BUT ME LIKE IT!!!!!Tongue out

Another thing that could be mentioned is that caffeine can disturb your sleep/wake pattern, specially the older we get, the less melatonin is produced by the body, which regulates the natural pattern. I drink about 2-3, but only in the morning. A cup of coffee later during the day and my sleep is not deep (I love a good sleep!).

Oh, I forgot, a picture from today's ride:

It was 34c (hot as hell) and I had to stop climbing the mountain range, as I almost passed out.

Don't worry about the heat, by the time your race comes it is going to be lovely weather and you'll be flying!! Nice pic btw, I'm really thinking about paying you a visit.

Thanks for the caffeine answers.  Not to be outdone by our cohort from "Down Under", I have attached pics from my bike ride today.

The burritos are pretty obvious.  We could not identify exactly what kind of cat that was other than NOT a house cat and DEAD!  Could be a bobcat, lynx, cougar, etc.  Any ideas?

That's a bobcat, poor thing. I run into them all the time on River Legacy Parks. They can be up to 20in tall and (they say) pretty agressive. I have run right next to them (a foot away) and they never attacked or even moved, they're probably used to the presence of people though... I heard that they have killed mountain bikers in California.

Poor baby...
I love the things we see during bike rides or runs, you would never see this from the car. It's like another reason to do it.
Thanks for the pictures Jackie!

And the burritos are super cute!

Crappy run tonight.

I'm actually looking forward to the swim tomorrow.  I'm not out of breath in the pool anymore.  I think it was a technique issue.  Mind you, I'm not trying to set any speed records for swimming or anything like that.

"It's what you do when you don't feel like doing anything that makes the difference" or so they say.

Mark,

I agree about not seeing things from the car.  I remember a few years ago when I started riding a motorcycle.  It was amazing to me what you could see and even hear by not being confined to a car.

Guys, guys

I was a swimming fanatic in the pool tonight.  I swam 1000 yards without stopping.  Woohoo.  I didn't cheat and hang on the end of the pool after every lap either.  I came up and took a regular breath and then turned under water.  Still need to get that flip turn perfected.

I just concentrated on swimming SLOWLY and my rhythm felt great (to me at least).  I almost felt like I was on cruise control.  I was also trying out my new tri suit.  Maybe having Voler on my thigh made a difference.

Thanks for listening!

Woooohoooooo!!!

Breakthroughs are earned, they don't ever happen by chance. Congratulations, you're a Jedi now!!!!

Don't worry about flipturning though, I don't do it and it will not help you in triathlons but if you want to do it it's fine.

Actually during the week it's better to keep it short and fast, have you ever done bike intervals?

No to bike intervals, other than an occasional sprint between two signs.  But if you will tell me what I should do, I promise I'll try to do it.

Ok, Do a twelve minute warm up at high cadence (around 90 or more) and then start putting TENSION by going to a much harder gear for two miles, your HR has to go pretty high, effort must feel like an RPE 8/9, then you slow down again (for twelve minutes) and repeat three times, finish with an easy spin. It should leave you tired at the end. If not, it wasn't done right. Enjoy! The whole workout is gonna last about an hour or more.
