It was a great weekend here!  Anytime I can get outside, it's a great weekend.  I've probably only been keeping up with about 80% of what I should be doing so... I decided to hire a coach.  More details to come, we're collaborating this week and should hopefully have a schedule rolled out by next week.  So hold on, it's about to get serious. lol.

Have a short brick workout tomorrow.  Will do the bike on trainer, but have to do the run on elliptical.  With 1+ inch sheet of ice covering everything, I can't go outside, and the gym is closed.  I won't count the elliptical towards my running though - Wink

I hear ya Brian.  We're getting pelted with a sleet like mixture and it's just a matter of time before our power goes out due to all the ice on everything.  I got 5 miles in on the bike tonight at the gym but they were trying to get oeople out of there so they could close early.

The south sounds better by the second.  Maybe I can talk the wife into relocating to Clearwater where her sis lives.  I'd leave tonight!!!!

I have a short brick tomorrow too!  Let's compare tomorrow, just for fun.

In reality, we all probably need two homes.  Because, trust me, in the south in the summer, you'd be miserable.

Morning ya'll!  I need a little help/advice.  Does anyone have a good site or info for a diet plan?  I eat fairly healthy now, but really don't know a whole lot about nutrition and how it relates to what I'm training for.  I want to make sure I am eating the right stuff at the right time for the right reasons.  Any help is much appreciated!!

Got my 9 miles in on the bike, then 30 minutes on the elliptiacal.  I just thought that would be safer than ice skating down my street (and a better workout)  Worked on keeping HR at 70% on bike and 75% on elliptical - successfully
Now I get to begin another day of having both kids and wife closed up in the house againTongue out

Sorry Cory, but I am not sure about weight loss sites. You might try the weight loss forums on here and see is they have any good ideas.

I don't know about online, but there's a great book called Racing Weight, by Matt Fitzgerald that's all about eating right for endurance athletes.

http://www.amazon.com/Racing-Weight-Lean-Peak-Performance/dp/1934030511

I also read Jillian Michaels (don't laugh, she knows her stuff), Making the Cut, that talked a lot about nutrition.  I really a learned a lot from that one.  Of course, since it's a 30 day program, she encourages cutting ALL the junk out of your diet.  It worked.  But I can't live like that forever.  But a lot of the principles have stuck with me, and I'm pretty lean for a girl.

Awesome!  Thanks for the info, I will check it out.  I have a decent foundation of eating habits (fish, chicken and lots of veggies) but I really want to try and understand the nutrition aspect of it to help my body operate and recover as my training gets more intense.  I'm sure your suggestions will give me a great start.  Thanks all!

Plan calls for a 32 minute run today, so I am going for a steady pace. I think one should work in speed intervals to their workouts, but also have a steady run scheduled. Agreed?

Speed intervals make sense if you have a solid run base and aren't at risk for injury.

Considering that you've been running for a long time and are comfortable running 32 minutes, I think it's smart for you to add speed work, or even just strides, into your run.

But I think it's important to throw it out there that speedwork/intervals aren't for everyone.  I got injured a few years back adding speed work in too early in the season and still pay for it with a calf problem to this day.  Grrrrr.

But yes, YOU need to work it.  Go James go!

Ok, I got my 45 min bike and 15m run AND a 35 min circuit right after.  That felt awesome!  And I probably would have skipped something if I didn't have to report back here tonight.

Good luck with the snow!

I'm no nutritionist, but I have taken a lot of time over the past few years reading a lot about it, and trying things out.  My first suggestion would be, if you're not already, start logging all your food.  Yes, it is a total pain in the rear when you start, but once you get your regular foods in there, it goes pretty quickly.  Try it for a month.  The most amazing revelation I've had with regards to nutrition was just seeing what it was I was eating.  Like realizing how many carbohydrates are in fruit and juice.  Yes, as endurance athletes, we need carbs of course, I'm not a anti-carb eater. lol.  I began doing this to try to keep to a particular micro-nutrient ratio (I think it was 40-30-30 at the time), and I learned how to have appropriate ratios in every meal and snack I have.  So, just balanced meals.  Anyway, I believe in order to change your diet for the better permanantly, you have to understand what it is you're eating to begin with.

Hi:

Returned on Tuesday from 5 days/4 nights in Disney with the family. Great time, but man am I tired.  Managed to get 3 workouts (12 miles of running and 45 mins on a spin bike) in so I was pretty happy with that.  Time to get back in the saddle.  Glad to see every one ramp up the training.

Thanks Jessica!  That is the route I am taking.  I have started to log all my food on a daily basis and it has helped just to see everything I have been eating.  Don't get me wrong, I still want a cheeseburger in the worst way, but I am trying to eat balanced meals with the right foods.  I got a few books last night so I plan on diving into those and starting my journey.  Thanks to all for the advice!

Morning ya'll.  I got a 35 minute interval run in last night (3:30W/3:30R) and got 2.73mi in, but the pool was doublebooked since the the Monday classes were cancelled due to weather...no pool time last night.  I also finally broke down and got a real pair of running shoes and I must say, I am a dumba$$ for not doing this sooner.  My feet don't hurt this morning, my knees feel great and I felt like I could've run forever last night.

I'm figuring this out as I go along and I was shocked that something as simple as running specific shoes would make that big of a difference.  Thank you Asics!!!

Does anyone besides me choose a traning plan and then find yourself always wanting to change or modify it?

I feel like every week I'm saying "I'm going to move X workout because this makes more sense..."

I need to just trust the plan and just do it.

I'm silly.

Are you changing it because you think you know what you need better, or for convenience?  I say if it's for convenience, try to stick to it, but sometimes life gets in the way and you have to do what you have to do.  We're not professional athletes here.  I personally have never just stuck with a plan.  Usually because along the way, I come with other ideas of things that I think I need.  Like an extra bike, or more ST, or more intense runs.  I have major issues following a plan.  Probably why I just decided to hire a coach.  I want to move up in the ranks, and this is the best way I can think to do that.  If you're not contending for a podium spot, do what works for you, I say.  Just my .02.

Oh yea, and keep in mind, unless that plan was made just for you, it will have it's limitations.  Sometimes you will know better than the plan.

Hi everyone!  My name is Jim and normaly wouldn't "intrude" but James asked if might pop in on occasion and maybe offer up some insight???  I'm a bit knowledgable in the area of Clydes/Athena or the bigger (tall) athlete and recently have been successful in a weight loss program to finally get to my race weight...  I'm thinking about authoring a brief summary on my journy soon with some pics.

As for resume, I have a couple IM's and half dozen HIM's under my belt plus a bunch of other shorter races and odds and ends...  Been doing this for... I don't know 4.5 years officially?  But doing some sort of S/B/R just about my entire life.

2011 will be a lot of shorter races but building up to IMAZ in Nov. and POSSIBLY "Race Accross the Sky", if I get in via the lottery.
