croixfan - 2011-04-16 9:31 AM

Got off my backside -- thanks for the KITA Mike! -- and headed to the Y for an AM swim.  Decided to do 1000 yards straight.  Time was 28:49 (2:42, 3:05, 2:59, 2:58, 2:54, 2:48, 2:52, 2:51, 2:49, 2:45).  While my PR is at 28:00, think this may have been the best I've ever done as I did not push / stretch myself.  Simply relaxed and took my time.  Around 500 yards, found myself breathing easy / seeming to get plenty of air.  Result was that I had no muscle fatigue and it was "easy".  Could tell my form was pretty ugly, but did not worry about that as I wanted to enjoy actually getting air versus fighting.  Think that I'm really close to a big improvement in the pool.  Believe that muscles are starting to get developed; and, with my increase in confidence, I'll start to see the times drop.

Hoping to get a run in this PM / will be shooting for my 4.7 mile route at a 10 minute / easy pace.

Hope everyone has a great Saturday.

Chet, thanks for keeping us updated on the race!  Hope the blisters aren't too bad--they are battle wounds that will make for great conversation at work on Monday!

cbarnes1 - 2011-04-16 1:14 PM Last Leg done. 9.76 miles. The team did well and we are having a great time. Everyone have a great weekend.

Isn't it amazing how well your body reponds when you can relax while working out?  Nice work!

croixfan - 2011-04-16 1:55 PM

Headed out for a run prior to lunch.   Goal was to run nice and easy at a 10 minute pace.  Took my time and relaxed.  Felt very strong and solid / could tell I was running WAY below 10 minutes.  Result was an "easy" 8:56 pace for 4.7 miles (42:01 total).  Very pleased that I'm starting to feel like I have some strength in all of the disciplines.  Not patient by nature and it's been frustrating working on building a base.  Nice to see it starting to pay off.

Wow! It's going to take me awhile to read all the posts! I did get my 2 runs in...goal was 2 runs and 2 swims. No swims. I packed my bag and headed to the y only to get there and realize that I didn't pack my suit! Sooooo assuming skinny dipping was against the rules,  I took a shower and headed to the mall. It was a bad time anyways as there were about 100 kids in the pool having an underwater Easter egg hunt. Cute...but not conducive to lap swimming! Early morning run or elliptical at the very least and hopefully an afternoon swim.

Hope Everyone is having a great weekend as well.

Not to experienced in goggles either. I have had three pair and have had the best result with the cheap speedos. They fit well and gave me the best vision.

Johanne- Congrats on your bike ride and sorry about your husband not finishing. A lot of the enjoyment is doing these things together. I really hope his bike is OK. It happened with my Garmin today. I had to put all the data in my log from the race by hand.

Tim- don't give up for sure.  Thats part of the reason we aare in this group is to gain more knowledge in areas where we are weak. I have already taken a lot of what has been shared here and plan to incorporate it. You can do it.

Curt- Good Job! Seeing improvement is addicting! Sounds like your run was fantastic.  When the bad days come its days like you just had that you remember why we do this.

Chet- How much fun you guys must of had. I love doing non conventional stuff. Gongrats on your times

Suzie- Good job on your walk and nice touch with the hills. I hate hills but my daughter tells me "hills are your friends"

I finished the race and had a blast, but the Obstacle course kicked my butt. It had 6 stations with everything from a maze to hay bale climbs. The Race was put on by all volunteer staff and I thought they did an excellent job. There were only 81 total participants with 20+ doing the tri. Results posted in log. Finished 6th overall, would of been 4th if I hadn't followed someone who was lostYelland ran an extra 1.5 miles. I felt really good even at that as I was the oldest one out there. Overall it was fun and well worth it to support a local group. It was the farthest distance I have done to date and was pleased with my results. 1:40 for the 25 mile bike ride and I averaged 8:28 miles even running the extra 1.5 mile. These were personal bests also.

Hope everyone is having a Fantastic Weekend.

50andgettingfit - 2011-04-16 6:59 PM

Hi all, is everyone having a great weekend???

To the goggle question. I can't remember what brand I'm using but they work ok. I was using a pair for quite a while and at my last tri last year they got leaky. I didn't discover this until I went in for my warm up and transition was around the corner and up a hill and I didn't have time to get my back up pair. I think this year I'm going to pull out a new pair a few swims before I race and hopefully I won't have that problem come up again.

Dave-looking forward to hearing about your race.

Tim-swimming seems to be the sport that takes most of us the longest to get comfortable with. You can do it Sealed Keep at it!

Curt-isn't it nice to be in a group and feel like there are others out there too working through the same thing. We are all going to have a great year. Super nice to turn around and have such a good run too.

Chet-Glad the last leg was early and cooler for you. Sounds like it was a great race.

Suzi-great job on your walk. Nice to add the hills too.

Mike-Glad your foot is feeling better. ART is a thing of beauty!

Sara-didn't you have a race this weekend? How'd it go?

I did a 100K bike ride today. The weather was perfect. Dave broke his chain and cassette on his bike and might of cracked his frame He had to get SAG'd back to the starting point after 10 miles. It was pretty disappointing. I kept going on the ride and felt overall pretty good about my ride. I was more relaxed on the downhills and was able to maintain a good pace on the straights. The climbs  weren't fast but I didn't have to stop. It was all a lot of fun. I finished just under 5 hours with 2400 feet of climbing. My Garmin transferred the data to my computer and then it was all lost somewhere so I can't pull up any of my stats Has anyone ever had that happen? I might call support Monday and see if I can retrieve it.

Hope everyone has a great rest of the weekend!

Johanne

Curt - tri folks are definitely WAY more supportive than people from other sports. I think it has to do with the humbling experience of one's first race.  We all have one part of the sport that we're better at and other parts that we can improve on. I think it helps keep egos in check.

p.s. Never say never! in 2005 I couldn't run a quarter of a mile and then in 2010 I finished IM Lake Placid.  The hardest thing for me when I was training was sacrificing time with friends and family and sleeping in on weekends.  It truly is like having a second job!

croixfan - 2011-04-16 4:17 PM

Yeah right -- you know this is all about the ups and downs!  So frustrating that you can't bottle days like today and keep them going.  That said, I'm being realistic about the whole thing.  Only started endurance sports last year and I'm fully expecting it to take 2-3 years before I'm comfortable.  It's nice to see it coming together a bit, but there is so far to go.  The new groups been a big help -- folks pushing, offering ideas that work and generally supportive.  Thing I've been so impressed with in the triathlon area is how supportive folks are to each other.

Regarding the IM thing, can't ever see it.  Could see Olympic length and MAYBE a HIM.  But the full  IM seems to be brutal on your body.  Not doing this to hurt myself!!!  As long as you and Itzia stay nice, I'll let you hang out with me.  HeXX I can't you off with your silence of the lambs dungeon don't know what the reprecussions would be.  And Itzia's my Spanish teacher so have to keep her around!

Woohoo! Nice!  I've found that people can speed up results by throwing intervals in.  So, if you go for a 15 minute walk, you can try a 5 minute warm up then 15-30 seconds of speed walking and then recover for a minute or so and then do a cool down. =)

suzielea - 2011-04-16 6:08 PM

Walked 1.15 miles today - the first .69 only took 13:xx so it was possibly too fast (although I could still talk so it mustn't have been too bad)  and then the second part involved hills so it was a pretty good workout. Just worked out that I didn't start the timing till .13 miles which probably explains why I was so fast on the first section. I used the .13 miles as a warm up but it wasn't much of one so I'm counting the whole lot

LOL  We had a guy at work put up a "Do not disturb" sign on his office door and I added the "sig quote" to it. He liked it so much he left it up for a week.

Sara-didn't you have a race this weekend? How'd it go?

I did! I did a 5k trail run with obstacles and I LOVED it!  I've never done a true trail run and it was a blast to hop over tree roots and picnic tables and logs.  I even chicked a few guys. Cool  I also biked for almost an hour before the race and then two hours after the race.

I had a sports hernia repaired at the end of December and I still have pain in my lower abs/left groin so today it was pretty intense while I was at work. Tomorrow I have to remember to take it EASY when I go to our club run.  I think I'll take our chocolate lab, Halligan, so that I have an excuse to slow down. Innocent

That's a FABULOUS idea to watch what other people do during a triathlon.  I volunteered in the women's transition area at Ironman Lake Placid in 2009 and learned SO much-like not to tie my shoe laces together (takes time to untie them), pack extra dry clothes (you never know what the weather will be like), TAKE THE SUN SCREEN (you never know what the weather will be like).

Enjoy learning not to tip over at stop signs!!!!!! Surprised Fingers crossed, I only fall when I'm slowing down or stopped.  Oopsie!

kgore - 2011-04-16 9:21 PM

the other benefit will be watching the triathlon and seeing how everything works. I'm really looking forward to it.

After that, tomorrow will be a combo workout--swimming and running plus some weights for good measure--and I ALSO need to get the bike out before my next long ride--I just put some new pedals on it--the clipping type--so I will need to get used to being attached at my feet!

Oh well, back to dinner prep.

Another 1.02 mile walk today taking me 24:03 - I started slow then speeded up - giving me a weekly total of 5.13 miles. Highest since my comeback and close to my highest for the year which is 5.8

WCG - I may try that next week. My goal is still to breat the 20 min pace mark so It'll either be that or another time test

Great work everyone else - I'll do personals eventually but I have to workout who's who and what you're all doing first

Oh I also paid for my first race (a 4k walk on May 8) today.

Tomorrow's plans:

Homework

Bike riding  or swimming - possibly both

Attacking my room - if I get all the homework done

Glad it was you jumping the obstacles and not me Sara.  With my coordination we'd be reading about broken bones.

They've got an event they hold here in Chicago -- believe in a few other places as well -- that's called the "warrior dash".  All kinds of obstacles + mud + a fire jump.  Checked out the website and it looked really cool, but I'm too much of a chicken to try that one!

I'm doing Muddy Buddy in October. I did it last year too. Looking at the websites, I think it's much tamer then WD. You pair up with a partner and alternate running and mountain biking with an obstacle at each switch. The obstacles were fun like a balance beam and a wall climb, mud crawl, etc. They add up your ages to put you in an age group and we were in the 99+ group and came in 2nd! The funny thing was there wasn't an age group above us. I think they figured at a certain age you just wouldn't do these fun races

Did 900 yards at the pool and a 3.4 mile run this AM.  Both went fine / very pleased with the weekend.

Sara, need your help and guidance on the swim.  Today I was working on form -- if that's what you want to call my swimming!  Can tell that my legs are still sinking and that I'm lifting too much on my breathing.  HOWEVER, I swam 100 yards at a faster pace / bit harder effort.  During this 100, could feel my body rolling, arms extending, felt the power/resistance as I pulled, could tell I was on top of the water, was rolling versus lifting to breath.  Time was 2:08.  Not earth shattering, but a number I'm OK with.  Challenge is that I don't feel as if I can do this for longer than 100 yards.  Recovered after about 30-40 seconds.  What's your recommendation on how I can build on this / learn to hold this pace for longer?  Also, why does my balance suffer so much more when I am going slow?  Really like the feeling of moving through the water and look forward to when that's the norm versus the exception.
