Have you found a good place to do open water swims?  I am still thawing from the white rock, but i figure while I am still somewhat frozen, i should hit the lake.

Hello everyone racing IMCDA next June! I just wanted to say hi, and that using this forum gave me some great info for IMSG this past May. A few questions from the veteran IMCDA'ers..

Water temp for the swim? I heard it was mid 50's...fo' real??

How warm did it get for the run? Tolerable warm, or Africa hot? (like IMSG was this past May...ugh...mid 90's!)

I am really psyched for my second IM, and on my 39th birthday no less! Talk to you all soon...

I'm also still thawing from White Rock (what an awful day) but I'm not hitting the lakes anytime soon!  I will probably start in early March.  I swim at Pier 121 Marina at Lake Lewisville.  FishingNotes says the current temp is 53* which seems warm given the air temp.

Welcome firedawg44!  I'm not qualified to answer the "veteran" questions, but wanted to say congrats on finishing IMSG as your first!  You will rock the hills at CdA!

don't remember the temp but it was hot. I was just helping with the race and was in a tee and shorts with water rolling down my face just standing in the sun.

The temp can swing a lot that time of year. between 60-90, you just never know. About 10 years ago I stood at the 4 of July parade in my heavy winter coat trying to stay warm.

I'm planning my post race vacation too.  Any locals know how long drive time is to Glacier NP?

Make sure that you check to see how much of the park is open. That time of year as much as 1/2 the park is still snowed in some years. Just check about 2 week before you come and you should be fine. like it was said it is 4 hours to the park.

Is it likely the main road through the park will be open?  We only have a few days post race to spend since we are driving out there from Michigan.  We plan on camping.  What are some of the major sights to see?

at the park ,on the way home from the park or from Coeur d' Alene to the park?

I did the race in 2011. The water was reported at 54.7 race day. The air temp was around 47 or so when the race started. I wore full wet suit and a neoprene cap. My feet were numb for about 20 miles of the bike.

I think the max temp that day was around 85 but very low humidity. I never really felt too hot.

There was a pretty good wind the few days before the race and it picked up again in the afternoon for a while. I did two practice swims in the choppy water and it was pretty tough. Fortunately race day the wind died down.

I hope everyone racing in 2012 has the weather we had for 2011 as I think it was near perfect.

Thanks everyone for the input! You all confirmed what I have heard..so I'll be getting some cold water practice swims out here at lake mead this spring - it gets down to the low 50's.

About IMSG..yeah, I thought I was gonna rock the hills too, and did most of my runs on hilly terrain..but race day was a different story! Let's just say even with the right training, right race plan, and right nutrition, things can still go wrong...I walked half of that run course. But most everyone else was too, so I didnt feel too bad. That run course is a beast after that bike, esp with some heat thrown in. Too bad they changed the run course to a mostly flat, shaded, in town run...I will be back for retribution in a few years!

Anyone hear any news about the bike course changing this year for IMCDA?

Ok, I'm 99% decided to do the Galveston HIM on April 1st, which falls 4 weeks ahead of the recommended HIM on the IronFit plan.

So my question is this - should I adjust the training plan by skipping ahead 4 weeks so that I do the race at the recommended week during the training plan, do the next 2 weeks as scheduled (Peak 3-4), then repeat 4 weeks after that (Build 9-10 then Peak 3-4), then hit Peak 5-6 at the right time?

So, it would go like this (starting from week 1 of the 30 weeks):

Base5-6
Base7-8
Base9-10
Build1-2
Build3-4
Build5-6
Build7-8
Build9-10
Peak1-2
Peak3-4
Build9-10
Peak3-4
Peak5-6
Peak7-8
Peak9-10

Suggestions appreciated.  Thanks & happy trainings!

So you and I are like IM siblings.... MY first was also St George  with CDA being my second.  Although in 2010 the temp during my run was closer to 70... pretty much perfect.  See ya in June!

Hi Ironman CDA participants!

I am just wondering if they have the bike course figured out? I heard the course was changing, but the website still has the original course from previous years. Anyone know what is going on with that? Would be nice to know with some advance warning.

Thanks,

Bill

P.S. 194 DAYS TO THE STARTING GUN!

I wouldn't read to much into.  you'll just drive yourself crazy.  If I were you, I would do the April first HIM.  Take a few days off to taper before the race, maybe a few days off or very reduced training after the race to recover, and then jump back into your training plan.  And remember, no matter how many times you tell yourself during the HIM: "how am I ever going to do an IM when I feel so crappy?", just remember that most everyone else said the same thing.  I know I did!!!!!

I am doing Galveston with a couple of buddies.  I figure the only question is what my race plan will look like depending on how my CDA training is going.

Last year when I was training for IMWI, I did something similar in that my HIM was 4-5 weeks before the plan called for.  All I did was take the few easy days the plan called for before the race and moved them before my HIM.  I also pulled out all the speedwork the following week.  That's it - no restructuring of the plan - and it seemed to work for me.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Thanks PatrickE & docfish - I tend to get carried away with planning (I am an accountant after all).

RunScott, we'll have to have a CdA group meetup at Galveston!

remember, this Ironman stuff is more mental than physical.  don't let some of the minor details in a training plan consume you.  if you put in the time and training (no matter what plan), you will be an IRONMAN!!!!

I am!  It feels like all I think about.

I already have nervous butterflies.  I'm going to need a shot of whiskey before the swim start!

Good to hear I am not the only one!  I think my family, friends and coworkers have already had enough from me about this, and I suspect it will get worse.

There is an "IM CDA 2012" thread, over on ST, where a couple knowledgeable locals say the bike course change is a done deal.

They are also talking about the possibility 2012 may be the last year in Cd'A if they don't reach an agreement with WTC this spring...  which would really tick me off because I'm targeting 2013 as my first IM here in my hometown.

Thanks, going to go read after I get a little work done.  Also, if it's true, it makes me happy I bumped my first IM to 2012 from my originally planned 2013 go.

I'd hate to see Coeur d'Alene lose the Ironman.. surely the biggest revenue weekend for their city. Being 2 hours from Bend, I hope they are able to win their bid as well though... Great place, but I wonder where they would do the swim portion in Bend..
