Yes, 2012 here we come -- and you're in the vanguard, blowing into it with a 20-miler two days out from it. Nice!

Good plan, too, to hydrate and get psyched for a couple of days, and then being able to enjoy (and maybe even having earned!) whatever NYE and NYD bring to you.

I think my sports doc used words very similar to yours: "I would try anything rather than have it." He was very supportive of my neuroma removal when it happened, so to hear him so strong-voiced about the bunion surgery talk really caught my attention.

As for the toenails......aren't there effective torture techniques that involve their removal? No thanks from me, as well!

I know better then to try to do a long run on New Year's weekend! We don't do anything crazy but we'll go to a friends house for dinner and festivities Saturday night. New Year's Day is a lot of sitting around watching football, drinking fresh orange juice mimosa's and eating. I can't deny it! It's Dave's favorite day of the year

Dave has to go to work Friday so I think I'm going to plan my running route where he can drop me off 20 miles away and I'll run home. Then I can't fake my way out of any miles

TRINA -

I'm about four days late with this, and I hope your head cold has vanished once and for all. Maybe when it cottoned to the fact that you were taking it onto the MTB trails, it exited stage right in a big hurry. Vamoose, lousy head cold!

FWIW, the rule of thumb is that as long as a cold is from the neck up (that is, above the throat), it's "safe" to put it through the paces of working out --- that is, so long as you can physically handle it yourself. But at least the exercise won't (usually) make the condition worse.

The flip side to that is when an illness is in the throat or lungs, in which case working-out is NOT advisable. The best thing you can do is lay low and wait for symptoms to improve by about 90%.

Finally, the head cold position is not always so simple, as when I had a vicious sinus infection in early '07. I had never suffered one of those before, and it took me about 2 weeks to realize that I wasn't getting better and needed to see my doc. And during that period, I had absolutely no interest in doing anything....and may in fact have done nothing at all, or nothing at all sustained beyond an initial feeble effort. I oughta go back to my log and see just how pathetic I really was! (Awwww, poor baby......!!!)

I agree with George about the allure of your data for the run on the 24th. Nice effort on a none-too-easy distance, which means it's one that is a great building-block for where you're headed. Sweet!

How did you arrive at your zones? They could well be accurate for you, but to my eye they are maybe a bit "low". Let me think about that a bit, though, okay? I will also try to dig up some references to seminal articles on heart rate zones. (If nothing comes soon, bug me and I will eventually produce!)

Did I post about your list a few days ago? I was thinking I did when I was at my daughter's, but if I didn't.....

Lori is the owner of "retiretotri". She PMed me today and said ashe will post her bio in a few days.
Bonnie is the real name of "bonbon2252", although she hasn't posted beyond her first one or two. Hmmm.

MANY thanks for compiling that!!!

--------------------------- "Slower, Perhaps, But No Less Efficient With Age" -------------------------------------------------

That's the title of a great piece from yesterday's (Tuesday, Dec. 27) New York Times. The author is Gretchen Reynolds, and it was in the Health section. I am terrible (as in, can't do!) at posted clickable links, so the best I can offer is the title, author, day, and www.nytimes.com. For those who track it down, enjoy and be of good faith that running progress can continue with age. Halleloo!!

Yikes! And how are you doing now, a few days beyond your accident? I hope it was just a surficial thing, and nothing that penetrted to the points where the surgeries occurred. Following my tibial stress fracture in '00, and then a subsequent haiorline fracture at the same site in '03, it was appalingly amazing how often I managed to smack just about the same lalce ---- and then worry myself sick for a few days that the ache there was an indication that I had fractured it yet again. And that's the way each episode played out, as a false alarm with no lasting on-the-shelf consequences. I hope it's the same for yoru knee!

DOUG -

Yes, it's good for you, just as long as you don't push yourself too far into a zone/disatnce/pace that you're not ready for or comfortable with. To paraphrase what one of my favorite Yoga teachers says: "Don't try to move into space that isn't there yet."

As you work with the marathon gang, keep in mind the "10% rule", which states that your weekly mileage should only go up by about 10% over the previous week. This is not a hard and fast rule, as some peole can ignore it with seeming impunity while others need to dial it back to, say, 7%, but it works pretty well as a rough guideline. So, if you can check your ego at the door and not go beyond a safe range of parametwers for any given run, you WILL enjoy benefits from running with them. Nice find!!

As for your hilly-area question --- YES!!! To be sure, to be thoroughly sure!

GEORGE -

No apologies fro being a bit of a minimalist, as that pretty muich describes me. i am basically a Luddite at heart (and skill-set.....), although I have flirted over the years with getting more techie in my training. Since maybe '07 or so, however, I have evolved (or is it "devolved"??) back to a more primitive training condition. It's a good spot for me, but i fully understand the interest in using technology to help you understand your body better, by way of becoming more proficient at swinmming and cycling and running. And to that end, there are several folks here who are on top of technology and use it really well, so don't be at all hesitant about asking questions!

Also, I am sorry I am late with "useful gift" ideas, and I hope your Boxing day sales are still happening. If you enjoy doing mailorder stuff, many online retailers have end-of-year sales.

---A wetsuit is always valuable, and keep checking www.xterra.com for their very frequent deals. They also appear here at BT as one of the regular "drive-by" ads on various pages.
---BodyGlide is great to have, not just for wetsuits but also for blister and chafing protection.
---Race belts are wonderful inventions; get two for if and wehn one breaks!
---Elastic laces for running shoes are also great inventions. I prefer EZ Laces, although therevare several other good, workable brands.
---A good, lightweight, breathable running cap is also highly useful. Anything made by Headsweats is quite good, although my go-to preference is from DeSoto Sports.
--- Lightweight cotton running gloves are ideal for spring and fall slight-chill-in-air runs.
---A Bento Box is nice for long rides. These attach to your top tube and stem via velcro straps, and while seemingly small, they can carry a surprising amount of stuff. Most people use them for edibles, but the limit isn't just with those.

I'll keep thinking about Worthy Stuff!

Hello everyone,

In reading the bio's, I think there are quite a few of us that wanted to lose a few pounds to make training/racing more enjoyable The times in my life where I've been the most successful in losing weight has been when I've logged my food and kept track of calories. I'm going to start doing that next week with a plan of getting some weight off before my heavier training starts up for the tri season. I've lost some weight in the last 3 years and I'd really like to drop a bit more and be done! I know BT has a 'weight loss' section but I thought it would be fun if anyone here was interested in joining me so we could hold each other accountable and motivated. Anyone interested?

We could check in here or make a FB group to not clutter this board. Let me know if anyone wants to join me!

If anyone is on Facebook and wants to 'friend' me, Johanne Volante Roberts. It's fun to see pictures from tri's, etc.

We're off to the Sharks game tonight for some hockey fun. Go Sharks!

Johanne

Hi Johanne,

I agree with you on the success of weight loss being tied closely to food logging.   I have found the same.   I too would like to lose those last 3-5 nagging pounds to help with my hill climbing and running, so might like to join your group and will start logging Jan 1.   I'm not good with Facebook though and not really comfy putting info out there, but here on BT would be OK.   I'm aiming at 1/4 lb per week for the weight loss.

I'm very envious of your running.

Johanne,

I hadn't read all the posts since the beginning so I took a look at your blog to see why you were running 20 miles.  Goodness - your 2011 and 2012 schedules are VERY impressive.  You've got both a marathon and an Ironman scheduled plus a lot of other stuff.  Busy lady.

I also see we both have daughters named Laura in college (Ours attends UW-Madison and is off to the Rose Bowl on Saturday)

Steve,

I was looking for your Gretchen Reynolds article and couldn't find it - but I did find another of her articles which really excited me.  Apparently, there is now speculation that continuous excercise is protective rather than destructive to the knee - as long as you don't get an injury - then all bets are off.

All right!  Done with the "admin" stuff, time to post something related to the fun of S/B/R....

I've got a buddy who is a huge fitness nut and does an incredible job on keeping himself in shape. He gave me some help on the losing weight / diet front.  Keys were as follows.  First, it's all about discipline.  Second, make sure you track what you put in.  Monitor the carbs, fats, and proteins.  You can do the research on what is the "right" mix, key is that you need to be aware of what is going in.  Third, you need to take the time to prepare -- pack a lunch, pre-cook a meal, measure out the proper portions.

Took his advice to heart and cooked up 40 oz. of chicken breast, mushrooms, garlic, peppers, broccoli, a leak, cayenne, chicken broth, sprouts and some other veggies this evening.  Broke it out in to 5 containers for my lunches for the next five days.  Also have some frozen bags of veggies that I'll split up/nuke to augment the 5 packs.  It actually looks good and is healthy!!!

Fun reading the posts / getting me re-energized each day!

stevebradley - 2011-12-28 5:48 PM HOKIEJEFF - Nice haul -- almost enough so that I wonder if you are outfitting yourself, or building inventory for a tri store!

Won't be complete until I get a TT bike.  Doing a little research now.  I have 2 LBS's in Sarasota that I have visited.  Options that are kind of in my budget:

Felt B16

Cannondale Slice Carbon 5

Specialized Transition Comp

Quintana Roo Dulce

Have not tested any of them out yet.  Going to be doing that in Jan.  Obviously fit is the most important factor.  Good deal is next.  Outside of those 2, any thoughts on the right way to go?

I'll join you Johanne.  I'd prefer to do it here (I don't check in on FB very much).  For the majority of us AGer's the single best thing we can do to go "faster" is get the weight off.  Simple concept, hard to implement.  I struggle with it.  Doing the workouts are the easy part for me.  Staying away from sugar is much harder.

I'm not one to jump on the scale on a daily basis but let me know how you want to do it.

8K, nice.  I've never been next to someone quite at that level but when I go to the pool early on Sundays I do run into an International Master's AG champion.  I think he mentioned he is the reigning champ in 100 meters fly and I think free.  It is indeed humbling.  When I'm in the next lane and he is doing fly it's almost like an OWS in the pool (lots of water turbulance)!!!

Great advice croixfan.

Just finished Bob Seebahor's book on Nutritional Periodization.  Really good book.  I listened to him on an imtalk podcast earlier this year (great speaker).  He was the USA's sports nutritionist for the last Olympic squad.  Really contradicts  the "carb loading" fade for endurance athletes on its head.  He's an advocate for metabolic efficiency (making your body good at burning fat for energy rather than stored carbs.).  He says that you do that by controlling your blood sugar.

I'm trying to rap my head around all he ideas but that are very similar to what croixfan just said.  Protein (chicken, fish, lean beef), carbs (fruits & veggies - no pasta), good fat (olive oil, nuts, avocado).

I'm going to see if I can find Seebahor's book.   Chris Carmichael also teaches nutritional periodization.    In '99 he was named U.S. Olympic Committee's Coach of the Year.  I studied nutrition in my early years and like what he says - same stuff I knew 40 years ago.  It kind of makes me laugh when I hear some of the new information that is being 'discovered' these days - yeah, there are some new discoveries but the basic science of nutrition doesn't change.

I agree with you on the metabolic efficiency.   My ability to burn fat for energy has increased quite a bit over 3 years but it happened as a result of a cycling training program from my kinesiologist after V02 max/anaerobic threshold testing.   Still working on increasing it.  But I also know that controlling blood sugar is REALLY important and one of the 3 pillars of good health.

In 2007 my Aerobic Base (maximum HR at which I burn fat as dominant fuel) was 3.7 calories per minute with total calories at 7.5/min.  at a HR of 122.    Last year my test results were 5 fat calories/min with total calories of 9.6/min at a HR of 134.

I was also able to increase my anaerobic threshold (maximum sustainable rate at which I burned calories (fat AND carbs) my highest sustainable exercise intensity)) from a HR of 136 to 144.   It's not bad, but I am still working on increasing my AT.   Hope to get it a bit closer to my max cycling HR of 159.  I know that for elite athletes these 2 numbers are very close.

It's nice to be able to get tested but I don't do it every year because of cost and once you have had it done, and know how the body works, you CAN get a pretty good feel for where you are.   I pretty much guessed that my new AT was about 142-143 before I was tested last year.

My V02 max is 49.5 ml/kg/min which is above average for my age, which of course makes me happy.  Smile Apparently this doesn't increase because it is largely genetically predetermined and has little to do with the efficiency of our metabolism, but it can decrease.

One of the biggest things this test showed, both times, is that my legs gave out before my heart, and I know I need some strength training.   Just can't seem to get it done on my own, so have signed up for some PT sessions at a club here where they work with athletes including triathletes and focus on metabolic training and efficiency.   I'm hoping it works.

Might have gotten a bit side-tracked here.    Anyway, I'm all in for trying to drop some more weight!

Anne
