Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Qua17 - 2012-04-24 6:22 AM This morning, I hopped on the bike for 40 miles of light riding (my legs are still wicked sore from my run on Sunday) and then I hit the pool for my speed workout. With 2/12 weeks until my first race, I wanted to see where I was in terms of my swim time. So, after a 5 lap warmup, I went all out to see how fast I could swim the 1/4 mile distance. I finished the 750 in 9:24 which is a 2:05 100 yd pace. For me - that is fantastic considering my goal this month was to get my 100 time down to 2:30! Pretty stoked... Also, I'm wearing a sport coat I haven't worn in more than 8 years. I'm rockin the plaid baby! Great to see everything coming together for your triathlon, not so sure about the plaid coat though... |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yay for plaid :-). Nice workout. I'm planning on my first light run since breaking my toe. I'm really starting to question the 10k I signed up for May 13th. Maybe I should just enter a local sprint on May 19th... What do you think? Brr on the water though. |

Unofficially a 2:13ish finish for 15.5 miles of technical, rocky, and hilly Spokane River Run. that's about 8:34/mi pace. Setting up nicely to go 8:00/mi in May marathon. Ninkasi Total Domination IPA as a refreshing after race barly pop. Think I'll relax a little for the rest of day. Next race is a 12K speed demon in 2 weeks. Lilac Bloomsday event here in Spokane. I ran into a fellow BTer at this run. That was cool. Awesome result, Kevin! How's recovery coming along? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SportzVision - 2012-04-22 5:21 PM Headed to the bike shop and jumped on the computrainer to have my pedal stroke analysed for efficiency. I started at 64% and ended at 94%. It was pretty cool to watch the graph change as I learned how to pedal, had my seat changed and adjusted, and a better fit. The backs of my upper calf and hamstrings are very sore today so I hope that means I am pedaling correctly. Had an issue with my knee the other day so I went for a short run this morning to test it out. No soreness while running but discomfort later today. I will give it another try this afternoon. The new meds the dr. has me on are affecting my endurance, (which she said would happen, I just did not believe her), and it makes me feel like I have never ran before in my life! I feel like I am starting from scratch and took a gazillion steps backwards. Well if I went backwards I can always still go forwards so I am off to the pool! No spring here...we just went to summer and later this week we still have a little of winter headed our way... I miss So. Cal! That sounds like a really informative bike fitting. Hope you learned some good stuff. I'm kinda jealous. Hope the knee starts cooperating for you soon! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Qua17 - 2012-04-22 9:11 PM Hey Everyone - hope you all had a nice weekend! I went out for a long run and thoroughly enjoyed myself. As some of you know - I've been battling the injury bug since I started exercising again and the 4.4 miles I logged today was more than I logged in November, December, and January combined. So I'm getting there. First race is three weeks from today. So excited! I figure one more challenging week and then I'll begin the taper. That's a big milestone! Congrats! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() yogachic - 2012-04-22 9:34 PM Hi everyone! I just got back from an 80-mile relay race in southern Illinois. I had been asked to join a team last minute, and only as an alternate.... They had 8 runners, so I was the 9th person; they wanted me to come in case someone got injured. So I was surprised to go down there and find out I'd been "promoted" to an official spot on the team. It was a super hilly course, they gave me the anchor leg-- runner #8-- which happened to be second hardest position in terms of terrain/hilliness, in addition to being the one that covered the most distance (~11 miles, split up in 3 runs of 3.65, 4.05, and 3.3 miles in length). My runs went surprisingly well. My times were faster than I thought they would be, especially considering I've only been running regularly for 2 1/2 months and am not used to the kinds of hills down there. My hip/calf/foot was feeling a little tight after my runs, so I made sure to stretch them while in the van and waiting for our runners to come in. I had a slight limp this morning, but was able to stretch & massage my muscles during the ride home today (~6 hrs of traveling time!) so now I'm walking normally again. I'll watch my leg in the next few days and take it easy if I continue to limp. Aside from the race, I didn't actually get too much training done last week. Since I had to take Friday off work to drive there (basically driving all day Friday and Sunday to go to the race & back, in addition to driving all day Saturday for the race itself), I wasn't able to get ANY biking done last week. I had to work extra hours to make up for taking an unexpected day off, which unfortunately left no time for riding while there was still daylight (was able to get my runs in, since I don't mind running in the dark). I got some good rides in the previous week, though, and will probably focus on biking this week since last week was so run-focused. Pool is still closed so no swimming unless the lake warms up. Anyways, I'm exhausted! I'll try to catch up on everyone's posts tomorrow! I hope everyone had a great weekend! That sounds like a lot of fun! Nice job anchoring the team. I had an opportunity to do a relay like that last summer but it conflicted with IM training. I really regret not doing it and hope the chance arises again. I think I need more runner friends. Hopefully you are feeling better after a couple of days of recovery! |

How long have you been off running? It may be easier to get ready for a 5k (even though you have to bike and swim before that) as opposed to a 10k. Hopefully after a run or two your body will let you know which seems more feasible. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Can you move down to a 5 k on that same race day (unless of course they don't have one). Otherwise run the 10K and adjust your expectation and use it as a training run with other people. Do it for fun and not race it.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Purchased a pair of used Profile Design Carbon Stryke aero bars this evening from a BTer. Can't wait to get them on and try them out. I have a pair of Profile Design Century bars on that I hope to get rid of cheap. Great pair of entry level aero bars. This is one of the things that I like about a new Tri season; time to buy and try out new or different gear even if it is used. |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think we need a picture of your bike with the new bars! Thanks for all of the suggestions on the race. It's only a 9k (but they say it's 6.1 mikes so I guess they really don't like to round. I'll at least go run part. I did run 1.5 miles today and so far my toe feels good. I think I'll try 2 later this week then start increasing if it feels good. I am getting super antsy though and really want to do the sprint the next weekend. Maybe I just want to increase the return on investment on my wetsuit and aero bars :-) |

I'm still plugging along at my slow beginner pace! I have a 5K on Saturday. Glad to hear your are still "plugging away" but you've got to give yourself some credit - you are no longer a beginner. You stopped being one the second you took the second step of your first run. Now you're an athlete! Good luck at your race this weekend! |

I saw from your logs that you haven't been doing a lot of running since your hurt your toe (ouch - that must have hurt) so feel free to listen to your own body. But it would be a shame to lose all that money and the opportunity to participate in a race that was cool enough for you to sign up for in the first place. Why not run only the first or second half of the race and walk the other half? Hope you continue to heal quickly! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well finally pulled the trigger and registered for the Heart of the Rockies triathlon in Invemere, BC. A redo from my first Olympic triathlon done last year. Hoping for big improvements. I am also going to redo the Alberta Challenge Oly at Miquelon Lake. Gotta find a couple of sprints one at the beginning and one at the end of the season! |

It would be fun to meet up with our group. Anyone want to do Boulder 70.3 next year? I went out on my road bike today at lunch and had a good ride trying out my aero bars. It was a little windy and I need more practice. It was fun though. My first goal was "healthy BMI", which I technically reached with this morning's weigh-in, with the highest possible weight of 149.8 for a 24.9 BMI. My next goal is my wedding day weight of 144. I'll have more once that is reached....
edit: "wedding day weight" meaning what I weighed on my wedding day - not an upcoming wedding. Edited by boxerdogfriend 2012-04-25 8:24 PM |

Gotta find a couple of sprints one at the beginning and one at the end of the season! I like to do redo's as well. Especially for races that are very local. Unfortunately I may not be at the training level that I was at the time I did the previous tri so I have no expectations to to be at that level. However, as a person gets more experience and trains smarter you can surprise yourself. I have two new races this year and two repeats. One new sprint, one new half-Iron distance, one repeat Oly and one repeat sprint on the agenda. |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thank you for the chart Neal! I have a few sprint tri questions that I'd love thoughts on. If the race is an 18 mile bike how far should I make sure I've biked before it. My plan is for a later race but I want to make sure I do enough prep. Also, how much water should I have / try to drink on the bike. I'm a bad hydrator so I've been trying to practice. I also booked a session with a bike coach (figured it would do me more good than fancy wheels or a gadget.). Anything I should ask him? He's going to watch me ride and give me tips. He actually won the sprint I'm doing last year so I'm going to ask him about course strategies. I'm pretty excited.I had a good ride today but need to learn how much longer I need to stop my road vs. Mtn bike at a stop sign. Wow did it feel like a slow reaction when I tried. |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well at 18 miles your right between a true sprint and an oly at 24 miles. I would say some 1 to 1.5 hour rides within the week depending on your goals (spped wrokout, intervals, hills, etc.) for the workout. On the weekend you are looking at doing a 2 to 3 hr rides. Not every week but maybe on alternating weeks. Now I'm no coach, but from plans I have used this is what I have been used to; this maybe closer to a Oly Plan length of rides than a sprint. For hydration I go with a drink or water or other hydration about every 15 minutes. I tend to use a profile water bottle up front on my clipons so I have it right there in front of me. Sometimes I drink to much in a sprint and I'll feel it on the run. So I try to use my watch to warn me. |
