Expert 1224 Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa. | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Thanks for the tips everyone. This will be my first IM so I'm certainly thinking (and over thinking) everything. Especially since I watched several of my buds cross the finishing line yesterday at IMMOO. I want to be comfortable on the run and the bike so I do like the idea of good bike shorts and a jersey and switching into something more comfortable for the run. Ugh. Decisions decisions. 69 days!!! (haha, 69).

Pro 4824 Houston | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I am still deciding on wardrobe as well and will not make any final decisions until I know the temps. I will wear my 400 mile shorts for the swim and bike. If it is cool I will switch to cycling top. I will do a full change for the run because it will be long for me and I want to be CUTE! I will be the girl in the purple skirt |

207 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Originally posted by TriManGA I'm doing bike shorts/ jersey on the ride (storage and comfort), and then doing a full change into two piece tri-suit for the run. Might take an extra minute, but from what I've read its nice to have some fresh shorts to switch to for the run (particularly if you are skipping the porta-potties). If you're inclined, you may also want to read some of the race reports from 2010 when they had some rain/hail/winds/cooler bike temperatures. A lot of folks said that the arm warmers were life savers that day. if you are chaging why bother with tri-suit for the run... shorts and a tech tee would be even more comfortable and no pad in the running shorts |

That is what I have. or should I buy a sleeved suit. I live in Northern IL Any thoughts? Could not figure out how to start a new thread. I wore a full wetsuit in 2011, then I was one of the few in a sleeveless in 2012. Honestly, I could not tell a difference in temps once I was moving. I will be wearing a sleeveless again in 2013 unless a major cold fron hits Phoenix and lowers the water temps to below 57ish. |

Extreme Veteran 648 Scottsdale | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Originally posted by devilfan02 Originally posted by todds Originally posted by devilfan02 Where did you get the info? I didn't find it anywhere on the net......Sounds better than doing 3 loops, especially after doing 3 bike loops..... Well, sounds like the IMAZ run course has officially been changed. Going to a 2-loop format where we'll run east out of T2 to McClintock, do a u-turn and run west to Priest. The Curry hill is still part of the course. Here's how it was explained to me - The new route, as I understand it- exit T2 and head EAST toward mcclintock, then double back to priest, head north, then east along the north bank toward rural, do the curry hill loop, then back to do it again. No map released yet I live in PHX and train with several groups here. I've heard this from several different folks over the last month so it's a poorly kept secret. Someone close to IM confirmed it to me yesterday and said the official announcement will be made soon. The issue with the run course this year is on the north side of the lake. For those who have raced IM AZ, the dirt lot we run through after going under the Scottsdale Rd bridge now has construction there, so we cannot run through it. Reversing directions out of T2 is possible, but it still leaves the issue of the dirt lot in play. I have not seen an official course come out yet (and know people who are tight with the race director), but it seems to me the easier "fix" is to extend part of the run on the north side of the lake out past all the condos, etc, then loop back around on the city streets to get to the bridge. Going east out of T2 without other major changes to the course on the south side of the lake will be quite confusing, as you could have 3 lanes of run traffic on the south side of the lake to the east of Mill Ave bridge. They will come out with the course map soon, and realistically it does not matter - 26.2 miles is not going to change (although only going up Curry twice would be appreciated). |

207 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread 3 lanes of traffic on the south side would just be a mess... even with the elevation change for the 2 lanes. I ran the course a few weeks ago and that dirt lot is still a dirt lot... must be something recent. I dont envy them trying to change the run... will be difficult planning with any change |

New user 62 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Agreed, the running shorts may be more comfortable, so I may pack both. I've not done an IM distance race, but I've appreciated having some compression on the quads/hamstrings during HIM runs with tri shorts, so I may make a game time decision. |

New user 62 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Agreed, may need to experiment some here the next few weeks. On another note, what is everyone doing on their nutrition/hydration strategy for the bike segment? I'm looking at two 3-hour concentrated bottles of Perpetuem (275 calories/hr), supplemented with 1 Hammer Gel per hour. Will also take a bottle of water per hour between the aero bars. I've been adding Endurolyte powder to the Perpetuem and that seems to be working okay, even though the taste is a little salty. Interested to hear what everyone else is planning on. Member 75 Platte City | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread 1 bottle between the aerobars with around 6 servings of GU Roctane Tropical Punch flavor. Around 240 calories per serving (1440 calories) and 35 mg caffeine per serving. 2-2.5 scoops First Endurance Pre-Race in the bottle (200mg caffeine per scoop) Will also have two gels (probably PB or salted caramel Gu...sooo good!!!) somewhere on the bike, one for the halfway point as a little celebration and 1 for 15 min before starting the run. I'll have an empty cage for bottle handoffs every 10 miles or so, choosing water at first and switching to gatorade if I feel the need. I'm anticipating approx 5:20 bike, so this give me over 300 cal and 150mg caffeine per hour (I drink tons of coffee, this is nothing) I do not intend on stopping at special needs unless I have to. I will have a backup bottle with around half of the above in special needs just in case I lose my feef bottle somehow. Speaking of special needs, at what point can you access you bag if needed? It looks like special needs is after the turn-around according to the map, so could I theoretically access it on the first lap? |

93 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I worked bike special needs last year but later in the day. the station is on the way back, after the turn around. not sure if they will be setup on the first loop but you will definitely be able to stop on the second loop as the special needs is suppose to be at the half way point but many were stopping on the third loop too as they needs more calories, hydration,etc... |

I'm still tweaking my bike hydration / nutrition plan. I've been experimenting on my long training rides. As of right now, it's looking like I'm going for 300-350 calories per hour done by Gu, Cliff Bars, Chomps, and Gatorade / Powerade / whatever is on the course. Along with that, I plan on supplimenting magnesium pills about every 45 minutes to an hour. I have cooked myself on my two HIM's on the bike only to have quad cramps smoke me on the run at about 3 miles in so I am really trying to dial this in. My reality is that in about a month, it will not be hot at all here and trying to match fluid loss (sweat) with consumption when temps are in the 50s vs the 80s will be difficult. I'm already mentally preparing myself for the SUCK that is known as "The Trainer" come mid / late October. Anyone want to meet in my basement for a 3 - 4 hour trainer marathon? I'm planning on watching "Space Balls" followed by "Hang over". Should get me through the long indoor rides.

207 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I am going as low maintenance as possible with everything. I have been training with the drink they will be giving out on the course and will be using that through out the race. So my plan: 1 aero bar water bottle Starting off with electrolyte drink This will be exchanged as needed at the aid stations. Shooting for a bottle up and a bottle back. I have been using honey stinger waffles super easy to store in the tri suit as they are flat and calorie dense. they run about 180 cal per waffle S caps for salt and magnesium on the :45 on the bike. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6 bottles of water/electrolyte drink 500-750 cal depending on water need leaving me 5 - 7 stinger waffles to take in during the bike. so one up and one back. will be an easy way to remember for me to keep food going in. I am horrible about not eating or drinking till i feel the need and has lead to bonk on a few long runs/bikes. I may put a snickers in there on the last loop just to shake it up a bit |

Regular 77 Lake Orion | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Great conversations! I'm getting very nervous as I'm way behind in training. New job and putting in 10-12 hour days = not much time to train.... I have not used any Salt type supplements. Can anyone comment on the use and how many/often you use them on the course. I do tend to get cramps and this may be the cause as i sweet a LOT... I have been using the GU Roctane on my long rides along with water, stinger waffles and shot blocks. |

Member 45 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread All of you might think I am crazy but I am 100% Paleo. So I keep it very simple. For marathons I have only used Himalayan salt, coconut water, water and oranges. For my half IMs I've gone with coconut water, water mixed with Himalayan salt, water, a power bar I came up with ( similar to lara bars), Yams, honey, boiled eggs and bananas. I try to eat something every 30-45 minutes on the bike. Drink the coconut water and water slowly. I rarely cramp, but a Full IM is a beast, so I am adding a new drink i am mixing with an endurance in-race protein powder by FHS. I wont be the fastest but I will be hydrated and have enough energy to get me through it. I will still be tweaking here and there as the remainder of the training goes, but I'm pretty set. If any of you are paleo, vegan, gluten free or all natural, Id love to hear what you are doing. Edited by blackorcutt 2013-09-11 3:57 PM |

New user 23 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I'm entered in IMAZ 2013, and I'm really looking forward to the race. Name: Peter IM resume: Timberman 2012. Why I chose IMAZ? My wife & I know the area well, the time of year is right, I have some family in the area, plenty of places to stay, I love the desert. Goals: Finish on my feet with a decent time (I'll be 47, and I'm a slow runner. I'm a strong swimmer & decent cyclist). Things have changed due to an injury, here's my thread about it: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... What am I looking forward to?: Pre-race jitters, taking in the whole day, hearing my name and seeing my wife as I cross the finish line. An In-n-Out Burger double-double & fries animal style right after the race, and a few more times later that week. Playing golf in Fountain Hills a few days after IMAZ. Not a vet, no advice to give, but plenty of questions, which I'll post. |

Extreme Veteran 611 Casa Grande, Az. | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I'm using Succeed Amino, 150cal a bottle. 1 per hr is what I use once it cools down here. 2 Clif shot blks every 20min(200cal/hr), and a S! Cap salt capsule every hr. About 350cal/hr. I plan on using both for the run, just be switching up the flavor of shot blox through out the day. Probably carry a Clif bar in case I get hungry for something "real". Can't stomach gels anymore. The Amino and Ultra by Succeed is a great product if you don't do all the sugar! The Amino actually makes your stomach feel "lighter" as you drink it through long rides/runs. |
