So I finally got my bike finished and fitted last week.  Unfortunately the weather has not wanted to help me out much, but I did get out on it once.  Here is a photo of the finished product.

You will be fine. You are more than ready to start the first week of the plan. This is just the beginning, it will star slow. By 18 weeks from now, you will be looking at this weeks schedule and laughing about how easy it was... I promise.

Great looking bike, Josh.

Well I had another set back this weekend.  Woke up Saturday morning to pain and my back being locked up again.Yell  I just don't know what the hell is going on.  I don't know what is causing it, as this time I did very little and still don't really think the last time was caused by over training.  I'm starting to think that what I have to do is increase my flexiblity (Yoga or something) and build a more solid core / lower back (weights and exercise).  I'm starting to think that now my cardio is allowing me to do more and my physical base (core) is not up to the task.  I'm not sure, but I do know that this crap has got to stop. Cry

Graham you are going to do awesome for your IM. You are already doing an impressive amount of swim/bike/running and have plenty of time to reach the distance needed to do a IM.

Todd, blows that your bake is hurting so much. But you are totally right. Generally building up a strong core will allow your back muscles to work smoother and better, assuming there isn't a significant injury or history of surgery. I'll tell you best exercises for back pain are gentle stretching, squats and lat pull down.

I have had chronic back pain for years and years (since my late teen years).  I have to say that last summer was the first time in over 20 years that I did not wake up every single day hurting.  I atribute last summer's lack of pain to my stronger than normal core.  I am sure that everyone is different, and I suggest consulting your doctor or chiropractor, but for me, the stronger my core the less my back hurts.

I feel pretty much the same about Chiropractors.  I have always been a "if it's not good to crack your knuckles, why is it good for your back and neck" kind of guy.  This was reinforced when a co-worker's husband who had been going to Chiro for years, went one to many times. The last time he went something happened and he is now paralyzed from the waist down.  I would not have believed it if I had not seen it all play out.  I must say though that on that day he did not go to his regular Chiro becuase he was not in, and he needed pain relief, but stilll it happened.  I do know they can do good but I just don't think it's for me.

Totally not Tri related, but:

I just found out last night that I'm not going to be able to hunt on my deer lease again this year (land owner got a divorce and had to sell some land).  On the good side I'll save a lot of money Money mouth between lease fee, feed, gas, food, and get MORE TRAINING TIME (hard to drink beer and train while at the leaseSurprised).  On the bad side I'm losing a huge stress reliever, really love to bow hunt (avatar tells it all), my daughter loves to go, and just this past year my wife hunted for the first time and really enjoyed taking her first doeKiss.  I'll look for another one as much for family as myself, but just a little disappointed right now.Cry

Now back to important Tri Talk

My wife recently had to leave her hunting club 2-3 years ago, she was pretty bummed about it. Stinks to lose so much family time as it sounds like the whole family digs it. You may find a new one you like more.

A couple of questions:

1) on the BT training plan it has 3 double days - either run/swim, bike/run or bike/swim. Are these ment to be done back to back or kept seperate? With my schedule its almost impossible to do them seperate - I just try to prioritise one of the sessions. Its not a major problem now but could be down the line.

2) any downsides of increasing the long bike duration this early? The plan has 90mins for this weekend. I've been doing 3hrs plus the last couple of weeks so not sure wheteher to drop back or not. For info - the bike is my weakest leg by some distance!

3) I'm trying to do most of my runs and bike sessions is Z2 - should I vary the shorter ones or will Z2 be better in the long term.

sorry for all the questions - just thinking more about stuff now!!

With my schedule its almost impossible to do them seperate - I just try to prioritise one of the sessions. Its not a major problem now but could be down the line.  A:  on your plan calender it says were or not to do it back to back "Brick", here is a copy and paste from your plan on Saturday of Week 2

Swim-Bike Brick

S: open water if possible.

Continuous swim. 1st 200m at RPE 9-10, then settle into race pace

B: 180 minutes at RPE 3-4

So in this case of this one, it says Brick, which would be a swim first followed directly after by a bike;  if it does not say brick then it's pretty much your call and what your schedule will allow.  Some days you might not be able to get in the brick and have to seperate the workouts - it is what it is, but the bricks are really good practice and prepare you for what you'll feel like.  Also if you have to due workouts back to back because of time, it is what it is, just don't hurt yourself in the process

2) any downsides of increasing the long bike duration this early? The plan has 90mins for this weekend. I've been doing 3hrs plus the last couple of weeks so not sure wheteher to drop back or not. For info - the bike is my weakest leg by some distance!  I would say that there is no need to decrease your workouts to match the plan.  If you have been doing more and it is not causing you a problem or does not take away from the other workouts then stay at the same time / distance.  I would not increase even more from where you are now unless you knew it would not affect the other workouts / your health.  I was also going to tell you to take the extra time off the bike to work on whatever you're weakest in, but you said it was the bike.

3) I'm trying to do most of my runs and bike sessions is Z2 - should I vary the shorter ones or will Z2 be better in the long term.  I can't answer this one because I do everything in the simplest terms. 50%, 75%, 100%

Josh will likely be able to provide you with better answers, but just throwing in my .02

sorry to hear. That would be a big deal at my house too. There are always more leases to be found. We hold about 150,000 acres in 5 different leases in South Dakota, I'd hate to loose any of them.

I know the plan will tell you when to do them separate, and when to brick them, but if you don't tell anyone, I'll let you in on a secret... I do them all as bricks. --- As far as doing more than the plan: there is one major downfall to overtraining, and that is "burn out". Happens very easy with overtraining. Not at first, but by week 16 you will be sick to death of it. So just be careful not to get burned out. --- According to most coaches, Z2 is where you should ALWAYS be unless doing speed or interval training. I don't claim to be a coach, but I do train myself in z2 for any bike ride that is not speed work or hill repeats, and pretty much the same for running. Totally different story for when swimming though. Hope this helps

Noob question. What is Z2?

Because of life circumstances I pretty much have from 5am to 7am to train so I do all bricks unless I can do something productive with a client at work of if my kid/wife are out of town. I figure all the triathlons are going to be like bricks so might as well train that way.
