I'm up for setting some more goals.  I was just thinking about posting the same thing.

I'll try to be a little more realistic this time too.

Hey Everyone;

I think I'm going to post some March goals, only this time I'll be more realistic and set out weekly checkpoints for each goal. Does anyone want to give it another go?

I am totally up for setting goals for March. I had a bad February because it was cold and I was sick for an disproportionate amount of the month. I actually don't think my estimates were bad if I actually hit the days, so I am sticking with the same rate.

However, I am heading to Hawaii the last week of March (woohoo!!), so my goals are from March 1-22 inclusive.

Bike: 45 miles (15 miles per week) Ride outside as much as possible.
Run: 15 miles (5 miles per week) At least 2 runs of race distance (3.11 miles).
Swim: 1500 yards (500 yards per week) Swim 150 yards straight.

Why not bring your sneakers and run in Hawaii... better yet it is the birthplace of the triathlon. You could even practice open water swimming.

I need to think about my goals. I would like to keep working the schedule as I have, but I need to add more depth to my training. For instance, until the past week or so I have not added in weights. I would like to be more consistent in that. Also there are specific things I need to work on within the training areas:

RUN: work on keeping a more relaxed stride. Stop scrunching my shoulders. Pick up a pace a bit and add more distance.

BIKE: Hills and keeping more endurance for the long sprints. For instance, a level of 6 or 6.5 at a cadence of 80-90 for 10 minutes. Something like that.

SWIM: Bring my times down for the 1/2 mile. Also concentrate on breathing left and getting my left side stronger.

I know that when the weather breaks I will add more to my current workout level. It is difficult training in the winter with short days. I try to get in at least 5 workout days a week. Sometimes I am able to do more but most times, it is five days. Also I work to get in at least two workouts of each sport a week. So some days I am doing two workouts, not including the weights.

What do you think?

Here are my goals for March:

Bike: 40 miles

Run: 40 miles

Swim: 15 miles (24,000 meters)

Strength: 3 hours (core workouts)

Should go a lot better than my goals for March so long as I don't get sick again.

Oh, I am planning on bringing some running shoes and will be swimming in some capacity frequently, but it would be more informal training and I am not really sure how I would estimate that properly. So I am just shortening the estimation month and I'll just do what I can and what fits when I am on vacation.

I'm waiting to hear if I get that position I interview for on Monday, before I set my March goals.  If I get the position, I'll be able to get in a workout every morning, b/c my hours at work will change from 8:00-4:30 to 8:30-5:00.  That will give me an hour each morning to hit the gym.  I'll probably work a lot on weights and swimming each morning.  I don't know why, but I absolutely enjoy swimming!  I figure I can then focus more intently on my biking/running at night now w/out having to work a swim work out in, too.  So we have to wait and see.  I really hope I get the job!!!  It has so many positive things in it, and so many good changes that would occur (such as my work outs in the morning), that it would be an excellent fit.  As it is, here are my tentative goals for March:

  1. Swim: 10,500 yards (this will dramatically increase if I get that job)
  2. Bike: 2-3 rides a week (monthly total: 50-60?)
  3. Run: 40-50 miles?

Here are my March goals:
Swim - 12,000 m
Bike - 60 miles
Run - 40 miles

In addition to these goals, I also don't want to eat any potato chips or french fries and only eat fruit for deserts (no more cookies or ice cream) and limit my intake of artificial sweetners.  I have been slipping with my diet and really need to take more time to plan my meals.

I'm also going to add a race goal: new PR in the half-marathon on March 18th.  That means I need to do it sub-2:39.  I did that time in the same race last year and I think I can beat that this year.

Yay to Jen for being such a great motivator!!!    Cool

My goals are set and hopefully I'll hear something from HR tomorrow about the position.  I'm tired of the anticipation!

Good luck to everyone on our goals this month!

Agreed, cheers for Jen! I also want to add a cheer for the Mentor program as a whole, and to the fact that we have a great, interactive group here. I am usually a forum lurker. One of those who has been a member for a year with about 5 posts, but this mentor program has really injected me into the community.

Also, you guys have been great as a whole watching training logs, commenting, and keeping me going and motivated. I have had my ebbs, but I feel like I am coming back stronger, and I attribute that to the training log inspires and this group in general. Thanks!

So three cheers for Jen and her group.

Finally, finally, finally. We had a gorgeous day in the 60s today. The snow banks are jsut about gone and my motivation is through the roof. I think there is a direct coorelation between the outside temperature and my eagerness to train.

I am pretty sure Jen and Kelli are getting this great weather, too. I hope that Erin and Robert might get a chance to train outside, too, in the coming days. It is March, after all.

Have a great weekend everyone!

We are supposed to have great weather this weekend - 50s & 60s.  It might rain, but that's okay with me.  I don't mind running in the rain.  Planning on running this weekend in between working.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

I wish we had the warmer weather.  It's currently 22*F and the high today is supposed to be 45.  The rest of this week is looking promising though - I see a couple 60*F days on the long range forecast.  *crosses fingers*

I did get in my first run of the month yesterday - a 4 miler on the t-mill.  It felt so good, too!  I changed one of my race goals for this year, too - instead of the Hosptial Hill HM, I'm going to run the 10k.  Since my wife is running the 5k, I didn't want her to have to stand around and wait for me as long after her race.  I'm pretty excited that she's going to run the 5k - it'll be her first (hopefully not her last, too).

Yesterday I went running outside. I was thinking that all the treadmill miles would have prepared me for running outside. I could run longer and faster. Don't know about you all, but it didn't. I managed about 2 miles but could have done more. It was harder as the wind was out and the route had some minor uphills. So I am now trying to put on my weather gear and head for outside as much as possible. I don't know if I will be prepared for the races if I don't run more outside.

What have you experienced?

When I started running outside, I was definitely slower than when I was running on the treadmill.  But, after a few weeks of doing it consistently, I noticed that my times started dropping.  Now, I'm much faster outside than when I run on a treadmill.  It takes a little getting used to the wind and the changing course.  I'd stick with it.  You'll notice how much better it is in a little bit of time.  Plus, you'll be so much better prepared for your races.

I was able to run 5.76 miles today; that's my longest run in quite awhile.  It was around 46* but with 20 - 30 mph winds.  Fun fun.  I guess it's good preparation for my half-marathon in a few weeks which is right along the ocean.  There are always strong winds on the course.  I just haven't had the energy to run much farther or run at all lately.  Hopefully that'll be changing in the next few weeks.

It broke 50*F here, so I got out on some local trails.  Beside the abundance of mud (embrace the mud - said to me by a fellow trail runner as he left the trail), the weather was perfect (no wind in the forest) and the sun was warm.  I got a 5 mile run in and it felt great.  I'm a little sore today, but I'll take it!  Because of my work schedule, I won't get to do much else for the rest of the week.

Well, we're a week in to March, and I thought I'd post and see how everyone is progressing on their goals.  I'm doing good:

  1. Swim: 600 yards (goal: 10,000)
  2. Bike: 30 minutes (goal: 8 hours)
  3. Run: 19 miles (goal: 40 miles)

With 3 weeks left, I think I'm in pretty good shape for the run and bike, but the swimming may not get met, we'll see.

Keep up the great work!!!

Well, I has a bad week 2 or March, so I am behind on my goals a bit, but my motivation is high, if that counts for something.

March 1-22 Goals
- Bike 45 miles (28.25 62.8%)
- Run 15 miles (2.75 18.3%)
- Swim 1500 yrds, 150 yards straight (300 20%) (75 yrds straight)

Today I am going to get a run in, so I will probably be approaching 40% on my run goal after today. I set my sights appropriately low so that I can possibly meet my goals even with a lapse like last week.

You guys look great. I have had to hold up on the run. The back of my right leg feels like I pulled something so I am not running for a week. Instead I have switched to the elliptical to compensate. Rough going!

The weather breaking is giving my triathlon fever. I don't know about you all but when its great out all I think about is racing or biking.

Have a great week!

I totally agree with the weather!  It's been in the 70's this week and it's just been so awesome outside!  The rest of the week won't be as nice (rainy/cloudy + 50's), but that's what March is supposed to feel like around here.
