Two years ago I purchased an advanced IM training plan from Rich Strauss at Crucible Fitness (now Endurance Nation).

I'm considering this plan for my HIM build-up. How did it work out for you?

OK, trying to get a BIGGER bike picture here....crap, not working...Tammy's is still bigger than mine

Bigger/smaller, they're both sharp bikes. Good taste. Now only if we can fast forward to spring so we can get them outside!

stinkyhelmet - 2008-02-12 10:15 AM Birkie - do you use Endurolytes? If so, do you take the capsules and did they do what they're supposed to do?

I've never had problems with cramping so never tried them until this fall when I did my first 50 mile utlra.  I carried a water bottle with me during the race and mixed Infinit powder I put in each of my special needs bags at each aid station.  I only carried 5 or 6 Endurolytes with me and starting taking them just prior to arriving at the the 3rd or 4th aid station and then one at every station after that.  I started feeling nauseaous the last 10 miles, but not sure what the cause was.  Maybe not enough endurolytes?  Not sure.  So, I'm not a big help to you.

I like Rich's general approach to training.  However, I don't think he has enough intensity in his run workouts.  I tended not to follow his swim workouts because I simply "don't get" that friggin' swim jargon they use.  Last year I simply swam at a steady pace for all of my workouts, and that is a big reason why my swim sucked last year.  I'm doing a lot more frequency and intensity this year for the swim.  I would recommend any plan that Rich produces to use as a template.

All,

Need to make a quick decision regarding trainer so I read few threads, "the Best Cycling Trainer/Roller - 2007" and more. narrowed it down to Cycleops Fuild2 & Kinetic Road machine fluid cost range $280-$320
Your thought's – model ?Pro’s ? Bottom line - are you satisfy ?

Thanks,
Z.

Everything I've heard is that the Kurt Kinetic is hard to beat.  I have a Tacx Flow trainer which is more expensive and gives you the ability to measure watts and set watts on ergo mode so you can fine tune your output.

Birkie - do you use Endurolytes? If so, do you take the capsules and did they do what they're supposed to do?

I have used both Endurolytes Caps (E-Caps) and S-Caps. S-Caps offer much more salt than E-Caps. Be careful using unknown salt capsules because they look the same. The amount that you would need to take is very person dependent (basically how much salt you are losing). A general rule of thumb is that if there is liquids sloshing around in your stomach, then you are probably low on electrolytes.

Here is a link that discusses S-Caps vs E-Caps: http://forums.runnersworld.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/533106038/m/76410...

I generally use E-Caps and use about one or two an hour but most of my runs are in cool conditions. Last year I ran a race in Arizona and it was very hot. I got both dehydrated and was low on electrolytes and had some major cramping for the last ten miles of that race. In that case I really needed to take probably 4 or so E-caps and hour. It takes a little experimenting to figure out how much one needs. Good luck.

Quiet around here. Anyone have anything fun lined up for the weekend? I am still waiting to see if we get any fresh snow. If so, I will get some snowboarding in, otherwise I have no plans.

Z - on the trainers, I recall Kurt Kinetic trainers have an optional powermeter attachment that's fairly inexpensive. I don't know much about them, but it's worth looking into as a cheap powermeter option.

Nothing too exciting happening around here. Yep, you can have all of our snow too! Snowboarding sounds like fun. Maybe I'll take the kids sledding.

Thanks, Bill for the input. Have you ever used the Endurolytes as powder to mix into your drinks? Or use them as capsules? I will give them a try.... when temps rise a little

I'm going to get one more long ski (40km ish) in this weekend before my race next weekend. Then a few shorter skis between now and then.  Need to start getting my race skis ready.  I always prep 2 pairs mid-week before the race so that I have options depending on what the weather turns out to be at the last minute.  They have over 6,100 racers registered as of yesterday.  I finally got back in the water this morning after some forced time off due to travel and sickness. Hope everyone has a nice weekend...and send all the snow you don't want up our way

I have only used the capsules. I don't have a magic formula for using them. I generally use them more by feel. If it is hot and I am sweating a lot, then I will take one or two an hour. If it is cool out I may not really take any at all. When my stomach feels bloated and fluids are sloshing around I will take a couple.

In regards to snow, I really only want it up at the ski hill. Here in town I can do without it. I am getting really tired of running on the roads. It has been warm here lately so the snow is melting from the South facing trails and they are really muddy now, but the North facing trails are all icy. In the typical weather forecaster style they keep saying that it is going to snow, but I think that this storm is going to be a bust for us, which is fine with me.

Is this something that you are paying to have done? Is someone doing it for a project? Is it for a TV show? Will we be able to view it?

Have a good run this weekend!

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new wetsuit. What do you guys think-full or sleeveless?? I'm leaning toward a 2XU. Any advice for a suit in the $200-$350 range. Man, St. Anthony's is getting close !!!!!!

Definitely get a full one.  My swim coach wrote this article on comparing no suit, sleeveless and full.  He's a 48 minute IM swimmer, and former Canadian champ...so I trust him Cool.  I own a Blue Seventy Helix and love it.  Not sure if you can get a decent full one in the $200 range or not.

I read a while ago that the full is faster than the sleeveless. I currently have an old QR hydrojohn sleeveless and I'm looking for an excuse to replace/upgrade it. I was going to treat myself to a full sleeve this year, but I tend to be quite warm with my sleeveless in cool water so I may overheat in a full.

I didnt??  Well golly gee- let me tell

So Rich (Scoobysdad) is a producer- I beleive mostly commercials but has even won emmys (gotta talk up my producer...ummmm how cool does that sound??) and  has decided to do a documentary on, I think there are 3 of us who are training for their first IM.   Last week he came and filmed my initial interview, I was on the trainer and we talked about tris, training, life- lots of good stuff.  Today he came out and interviewed my husband, I wasnt there (hoping it went well ).  I think next hes going to come along when I get fitted on my bike.  I believe he is going to try to get the documentary on FSN or Versus if it turns out well.

Im really excited about this- it will be great to have AND make me train even harder...heck who wants to have a bad race on camera!!

Please send thoughts and prayers to the City of Prattville, Alabama. The city was hit late yesterday afternoon by a F2 or F3 tornado. I was sent in with two recon/search & rescue teams immediatly after the storm. Dozens and dozens of homes with heavy destruction. We called off search efforts at dark. At this point we have no fatalities-many minor injuries and a couple of severe-possible life threatening. Thousands are without power-including many elderly. News crews cannot report on the damage yet due to the inability to get into the hardest hit area. We begin all operations at daybreak. Please pray for these folks and also our fire dept crews as we begin the day. I will post with updated info asap.

Thank You

I've been AWOL from the group for a little while and it took me a little bit to catch up on the thread. Great topics!

I just picked up my first wetsuit. A full length Blue Seventy Reaction (entry level), but I got it as a lightly used rental for $100. Between the rental cost and gas to pick it up/drop it off, I figure I've paid for it if I use it twice.

Marathon training question for this extraordinary group: My training plan calls for "easy" runs and "pace" runs, but I have no idea what paces these should be run at. I have run 5 mile races at sub-8 min pace, and ran a moderate, yet still comfortable 13.1 mile training run a month ago just under 9 min pace. My goal (whether realistic or not) is to finish a sub-4 hour Grandma's marathon in mid-June. I ran Grandma's last year (my first marathon) in 4:38, but I gave back a lot of time due to quad cramping in miles 23-26. Assuming that I can get the late race cramping under control through more effective electrolyte management, what kind of easy and pace speeds should I be targeting?

Based on your recent 5 mile races times and a 4 hour marathon goal, let's be conservative and say your Daniels' VDOT value right now is roughly 38.  This VDOT corresponds to an easy training pace of 10:14 min/mile, and a threshold pace of 8:33 min/mile.  Your marathon race pace is 9:08 for a 4 hour marathon.

You should try to get in some 10k races this spring to give a better picture of your race fitness.  We can then use those races to re-evaluate your training paces as you head toward Grandmas.  What training plan are you using?
