Welcome to the group mnb

Greg, sounds like this your chance for the an outdoor swim around the block

Got a good swim in today, 1750 this morning, then went back and got another 500 in trying this lap-track computer out. hard to use at first but getting the hang of it. Now I can just swim and work on form not worry about counting laps :D.

Going in early tomorrow about 5AM to get my swim and workout in. Talk to you tomoorw night.

Andrew,

Now thats funny, but I would not need to worry about the river beeing crowded.

Tell me about that lap timer. Cost, Brand etc. I will let you find a good one then maybe I will get one.

Kurt,

RE: Swim work out

I also just learned that there needs to be longer swims after the sprints from a swim coach. It makes you go from anaerobic to aerobic

8x50 then 100 then 150 then 200

Hey Greg

I am using the Lap-Track by Finis, I found it on

http://www.thetriathletestore.com

here is the breakdown of what I paid...

Merchandise Total: $59.95
Discounts: $0.00
Sub-Total: $59.95

Local Tax: $0.00
State/Province Tax: $0.00
Country Tax: $0.00
Shipping: $7.95
Handling: $0.00

Order Total: $67.90

Gift Certificate: $0.00
Grand Total: $67.90

They are out of Fla and took about 5 bus days to get to me in NC. I tried it the other day and man what a difference not having to count laps makes. I was able to spend my time working on my swim technique and actually was able to speed up without realizing it. I cut about 30 seconds off my 250 yard swim, not much by elite standards but I will take what I can get at 42 yo lol. Looks like we are going to get some snow/cpld weather here in NC over the next couple of days, I am going to get a run, bike or both in tomorrow and Sunday, may be using snow shoes come Mon or Tues.

Two weeks to go until my first sprint of the season. I'm a little nervous...however, I am sure that's not uncommon. It's a pool swim and that's what worries me the most. I've only done one other pool sprint. It was my first triathlon.

I timed my 100 m swim yesterday...it's about 1 min 50 secs. We have to give a 100 m time so they know where to place us in the wave start. Should I say 2 mins just to be safe? Or do you think I will get caught behind those who are slower swimmers?

Thanks
Leanne

Hi Leanne

I am doing my first tri in May and I had to give a swim time on mine also, I put down 10:00 but now I see that it is going to take me about 6:00. I am going to take my chances with the slower swimmers rather than get run over by the better ones, until I lose a few more pounds they may mistake me for a leatherback turtle and try to climb on my back for a free ride LOL. Good luck with your tri, hope you do well.

Hi Leanne,

I have never done a pool swim at a tri. Actually I have only done 1 sprint tri so far.

Don't you get your own lane to swim in?

The club, where I workout at did some indoor tri's that I have volunteered at , and the contestants had their own lane.

I thought that maybe, the times were for waves.

Leanne,

I have done 4 pool swims and the format was maybe different. They released someone every 15 seconds. If it was me I would try to be as coorrect as possible with out being slow. The 2 min pace is nice and without warming up first? this would be good. As you all ready know, if someone wants to get by just let them pass at the ends of the pool. It is hard to pass in the middle with three across, but I see it all the time. 1:50 ave pace or best pace?

PS: I hate to be behind some slower and I like to be pushed. I would list 1:50 if it was me .....

by the way .....10 mile race will just be a normal workout and I will not try to push it ... until I get in the race and can't help my self.

Good luck.

Did 2000 yrds of swill drills today with 500 wu and 500 cd. I think it is really paying off in form. 50 yrds best at 40s today. Got the water over my head and it did feel like I was swimming down hill.

Good to here you are going for the drills. It does work.

Well another day of training and a good one too. I finanlly got back out on the bike today, 12.03 miles on the course I will be riding in May's triathlon in China Grove, NC. I finally talked my daughter into riding with me, she managed to hang in there for the first loop of the ride before she got too cold and had to call it quits. My feet were a little cold, but there was no way short of a wreck I was going to stop until I finished the whole thing. I wish the weatherman would shut off the wind machine for a few hours while I am in the saddle, seems like no matter which way I go I am riding into the wind lmao. Managed to do 12.03 miles in about 46 mins, made up a little time after my daughter went back to the ymca. This was the first time I rode this loop and felt really good about it, I think the training and diet are starting to pay off. Started the day with a 300 yard warm up and about 350 yards of sprints, just kept trying to beat the last 50 yard swim time. How is everyone else's trainig going, s everyone staying healthy?

rbriggs how are you enjoying the Total Immersion work out?

Greg sounds like your training is well on the way to getting you some really good finishes this year, keep up the good work! BTW how do you get into my logbook and leave comment, that is pretty cool, I enjoy seeing them and it is inspiring.

I am trying to get back into training mode. I took about 10 days off to recuperate from laser eye surgery, then went off for a week vacation.

I did run 3 times while I was gone, and we took our mountain bikes so I did about 85km of easy riding for fun. I have not been in the pool since March 3rd though. I bought new NON-prescription goggles yesterday though so I need to get to the pool tomorrow I think.

Today was my first day out on the road bike. My eyesight still isn't up to par so I was a bit cautious on the downhills, not wanting to go much over 45km/h. I did manage to climb the ugly hill home in 3:50 today. Not a PR, but much better than my first ride last spring (4:15). I think the training I've been doing since January has put me in much better shape than I usually am this time of year.

There are a few coming up here on the Gulf Coast.  However, I have a son due in May and my wife is starting to have some difficulties.  I may have to wait until later in the season to start actual events.  That's disappointing but I should be better prepared.

Logged another PB at the 10 mile run time of 1:22:38. The key improvement for me was that I felt very good at a HR 158 to 161 most of race and that was a Z3 level effort. I went to Z4 for last 3 miles.  The issue now is to see what I do on the trainer tomorrow for the long ride. I am a little sore. It has been a long training week at 600 mins.

That's is a really good pace Greg, what was your previous PB? I've been focusing alot on the swim, I guess it's time to get back on the road again and start working on running more. On another note, I can't believe what I am about to type, but my wife has encouraged me as of last night to think about which tri bike I want to get (within reason). I am going to go test ride a Cervelo P2 and a Trek TTX 9 and see how I like them, I would really like to try out a Trek Equinox 7 but as of today I heard that Trek is completely out of them. If anyone know's of an 08 model in 51 or 54 cm frame please let me know.

I had a chance to ride the triathlon bike route on Sunday. Of course I had to keep an eye out for which roads to turn on, and had to stop and/or slow down at a LOT of intersections etc so it'll be hard to know for sure what kind of time I can do. However, I did manage a respectable 25 km/h (16 mph) so I'm pretty sure I should be able to avg about 29-30 kmh (18-18.5 mph)for the loop on race day when the roads are blocked off and I can really hammer. Makes me feel a bit better. I have to do the 10km loop twice and it has one ugly 10% hill that's about 1/2 km long I think. Ugh.

It must be somewhat of an advantage to live in the triathlon town and be able to practice the route. I plan to ride it 2-3 times a month between now and August. Hope it will help me to know how to pace myself. I suppose I can practice the entire tri route once I get a wetsuit and the lake warms up...

I think that is great to get a tri bike. I still only have a road bike and no new one anytime soon. Nothing like a new bike to help you get out on the road.

Let us know what you buy.

That's a good question since I'm such a noob. I guess all I know is that I can swim 750m in the pool in 25 minutes. I know I can do the bike in 40-45 minutes. And the run in 26-35 minutes. I haven't done many bricks so it's hard to say what my legs will feel like after the bike if I practice. My best 5k runtime is 26 minutes but if I hammer on the bike and do that in 40 minutes, I may not be able to run at all. LOL.... And transition time? I have no clue. Whole race - hmmm, 1:35-1:50? I wonder if that's any good? I checked out the times from last year and my estimated time was fairly competitive for my age group but it rained last and they were slow, especially for the bike I don't know what the times are like on a nice day....
