Morning all!  About to head out to drop DS off for his church trip then run a local 5k (Fat Boy 5k).  Don't expect a PR (unless I consider it a post surgery PR) but should be fun.  Rode yesterday with the new aero cover, didn't notice a difference but I think the bike shop messed up something with the chain and need to check it out.

LRR - Will do, actually found a Tri calculator online, click HIM and it puts in the distances.  You put in your different paces, T1 and T2 times, and you get a final time.  Intake wise I think I have that worked out.  I will give the details later.

Was hoping for a OWS this weekend but it has been put off to next week.  Turns out a friend has a ~130meter (x50m) pond near her house that they swim in.  Going to go afterwork next week with a couple of folks.

Lena - congrats!

Back later with more.

Morning all!

I am planning on attending the tri seminar today. I went a couple of years ago...it was OK. Im NOT drinking Infinit, sticking with 1/4 strength Gatorade and uncrustables ( for now anywayMoney mouth)

Yesterday I rode 50 and ran 2....felt really good. Training for my year begins on Monday. Bryan, thanks for the offer of diabolical coaching but I am going to sick to my plan. I have hired a coach for this year. Hopefully it will get me to the start line of IMAZ in one piece.

Tommorow I am going on a group ride run and swim with a bunch of BTers. It will be our first OWS of the season. You heard it right...the ice has melted. We did this last year and the water temp was 41. I lasted about 8 minutes.

Pete that cruise souds WONDERFUL!!! Hopefully you will get to swim in warm water.

Gary...all is fine. I can hardly wait to see how well you are going to do. Figure out the wheel cover thing!!!!

Hope all is better with your Mom Bryan!
Hope you are all enjoying the begining of SPring!

Bryan - add another entry for the finish line.  Fat Boy 5k ~26:40.  Shooting for an easy race but got a little competitive since my boss was running and since he hadn't been running I knew I had a chance to actually beat him (he is fast).  Back later!

Time to catch up:

Lena - very cool on the Marathon!  Good luck, when does training start?

Billy - glad you are back and in full swing!

Mav - Have you tried Gatorade Endurance?  Little more sodium and potassium then regular gatorade.  I have been using that and Infinit.  Going to work on the bike today.  I really think there is an issue with the chain.  But it looks good!!!

Bryan - Times: Swim 44 minutes, 5 minute T1, 3:00 bike, 5 minute T2, Run 2:40

Nutrition: Breakfast PB sandwich and banana (may be 2), Diet Pepsi, Gatorade (standard pre-race breakfast I have had many times).  Just prior to the race, one gel.

On bike, one bottle of Infinit and one bottle of Gatorade endurance, gel and snack bars in bento box, pick up other bottles on the course.

On Run: gels and gatorade endurance.  Plan a run/walk to finish.

Clothes: Orca shorts, blue tri top.  Short running socks that I have both rode and run in.  Shoes mounted on bike, I have been doing this for awhile and will do flying mounts/dismounts.  For me easier then running in bike shoes and clipping in.  Will have a spare pair of socks in case there is an issue in T2 (wet, etc).

Plan on carrying two spare tubes, 2 CO2 cartridges (which I have tried and know how to use). Tire levers, one hex tool, patch kit.

April 1st is my last long ride and it will be a 3 hr tour (a three hour tour, gilligan in the SAG wagon). With a 30-45 minute run to follow then taper time (short work outs to keep me limber).  I have a OWS practice in a 130x50 meter pond on Weds and a short sprint on April 11th.

I have been riding using both Gatorade Endur and my Infinit mix.  I am a old hand at eating snack bars while on the aero's.

What am I missing?

Gary, well I'm training for my first one in May , so once I run that, I'll just roll right into training for my tris and Chicago this time, I'll have 5 months, so hopefully, no more overtraining....

Gary...shorter T times....go easier on the bike and the run with time made up! Transition"T" does NOT stand for Tea Party!!!! Just my opinion

Mav, yeah those are a bit leisurely.  Especially the bike to run where I am concerned about about cramping.  But I could just do the transition and walk the first bit of the run until my legs clear up.  Reducing T2 to 2:30.  I have heard that on T1 the mat is after the wetsuit strip and then a bit of a distance for the T area (Billy, have you heard this?).  I can see dropping T1 down to 3 minutes.  Going to put the bike at 3:02 and change the run to 2:37 (12min/mile run/walk).  So new estimate:

44 minutes swim
T1 - 3min
Bike - 3:02
T2 - 2:30
Run 2:37

Which according to the Tri Race Calculator has me coming in around 6:30.  Originally had hoped for a sub 7hr so my new goals are:

Finish - first goal
Sub 6:30 - push a little goal
Sub 6:15 - push a lot goal
Sub 6 hr - tail wind all the way!

To hit a sub 6 I would have to swim -42 min, 2:14 T1, 3:02 (18.4mph) bike, 1:50 T2, 2:11 run (10mm).  All except the run  and T1 seem feasible.  Am I over analyzing this?

Gary, You can't help but to over analyze things it's what us computer geeks do - You'll do GREAT... you know the drill... on the first one, go out for the finish - if things go well, then great, if not, then great too - as long as you finish... worry about your times on the next one

Dang Gary, reading your plans really worries me.  I don't have any idea on nutrition yet.  No estimates on transition times or complete times on each stage.  I know I can complete the race and think I can do it in 6 hours, but, I guess i haven't prepared the extras very well.  That is really why I am doing the HIM as a relay team.  See what I can learn from watching and only competing a little.  I plan on learning from you Gary, as best I can.

Sweet on the marathon deary.

Oh yea Gary, way to beat the boss, feels good doesn't it.  Just call me evil Billy.

Diane - yep your right, its in our nature.  I will definitely be happy just to finish.  Everything else is gravy.

Billy - Yours is in Aug?  You have plenty of time and being part of the relay you will learn a lot.  Make sure that we exchange cell phone numbers so we can meet up at the race.  Any chance you would have April 2nd (Friday) off?  Up for a ride on that day?

Gary - first, easy on the sprint in April....go very easy....you are just practicing transitions...DON'T PUSH AT THIS RACE.....clear??  Any questions???

Then, don't stress on the transitions - don't cook a pot roast but don't over stress about the speed....work through them.....you can make up a TON more time on the bike and run than in transitions.

Salt - I would throw some extra salt in the bento just in case there is excess heat.

Bike / Run - totally agree with MAV - slow some on the bike....3:10-3:20 and make it up on the run.  I am a huge fan of the run/walk so you will get nothing but support from me on that issue.  In my first HIM, I pushed the bike and PAID dearly on the run....the second one, I paced the bike more conservatively and ENJOYED the run....yes I said  enjoyed.  I would also do the first 4 miles about 30 seconds slower per mile than your expected pace.  That will make the last 9 miles much more enjoyable.

Food - breakfast sounds good....just be sure it is 3 hours or so before your start.  On the bike and run I try to take in about 300 calories per hour....be careful taking in much more than that in the way of calories.

You plan is sound.....execute.

I am in on a tri training camp in Boulder CO in May....if any of you are crazy enough to want to go let me know.  It will not be crazy expensive as some of these things are but it ain't cheap either.  The schwag looks pretty cool as well.  We will be training with the Newton folks, Chris Leigh and several other Boulder superstars.....and you never know who you might run into out on the roads around Boulder.  How about a little altitude training as your season is starting?????

Gary, I have my HIM in Georgia on June 5, would probably benefit from a sitdown with you and discuss you plans in depth.  As far as the April 2 ride, I think thats a good idea.  Where would you be riding, BR or NO?  My cell is 601-520-7281 and my office is 601-583-7444.

Reading all these post about calculating transition times, food, and pacing on the bike makes me realize that I need to sit down and make a plan for my July HIM.

Ok, POYL totals are in:
S/B/R  Total training time is:  70 hours and 46 mins.  Way to go team.

Gary,
Its great to have a plan...especially on the bike! Its hard not to get caught up in the adrenaline of the race. If you hammer on the bike you will pay on the run. Pay attention to your speed on the bike. I too, made this mistake and paid for it on the run. I thought I was going easy on the bike, after 30miles I realized I was going 1.5 mph faster than I had planned....but I felt good, so I didnt dial it back. The run was...interesting. I had a great time, and thats all that matters in the end. Soak up the day!

Lena - AWESOME!!!! your finish line has been added.....that is fantastic on the PR as well.  How are the legs?

We are smoking the finish lines this early in the year....I think we are going to see a big finish line total at year end....especially when you consider the long distance stuff we are all doing....this ain't just a bunch of short course stuff......smile.....

Hey all!

Billy - will call, I have the afternoon of April 2nd off and trying to get the entire day.  Wouldn't mind riding NO but not sure where it's safe to ride but I do have a nice loop here that I can do in BTR.  Will PM you my contact info.  Would love to offer any knowledge I may have (albeit fairly slim amount ;>.  I have been thinking about this a lot and will continue to rework it as I can.

Bryan, Mav - Really didn't think the time I listed for the bike was hammering it but based upon my last long ride (really windy) I guess it was a little optimistic.  Seems my avg pace these days on the bike is around 18.4 which comes in at 3:02.  Don't plan on pushing hard on the bike.  I do fully expect the first couple of miles being a bit fast for me (due to the excitement) but I believe I will revert to my comfortable pace once I relax.

John - Congrats to your team on the challenge!

Winter came back for a day and it is cold here (cold for LA at least).  Today is an SRD

Lena - CONGRATS!!!!

Today is a SRD and next week back at it according to the plan.  A long run and some longish swims (3x750 and 3x600's).  Everyone have a great week!
