Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGEORGE - Congrats on joining Team, and I will get to that link asap. I guess that means you'll be at Nations then, and Ellen too. Woo-hoo!!!!! What you're asking about the plan raises the age-old problem -- how much to train for a particular race, and how much to train out of love or some other purpose? You seem to love those longer rides, and part of that is fitness and part is the hearth-health aspects you mentioned a few months ago. So, to a point, keep doing what you love --- but then in the final couple of months, veer back closer to the plan. At Nations, you just need to ride 24 miles, so going way over in your training doesn't do much that will help you on race day there. 28 miles, or 30 miles, should be a max for you, but if your plan suggests more, then do it. (Which one is it that you're looking at? Is Team supplying you with a training plan?) Edited by stevebradley 2011-05-21 10:19 PM |

Extreme Veteran 371![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mobile | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDJeff and Ellen - Good luck today on your raes. Kasia- I had the lemon lime heed yest which is one of my favorite, the flavor is not strong at all. I use the strawberry recoverite which did take a little to get used to. I like it but for the 1st 4 months of my training I was drinking 100% whey Banana flavor with skim milk and about 5 whole strawberries. Now I use the recoverite with water so the texture and flavor is different but I really like the recoverite over the whey protein shakes. Im like steve, I do not like the chews or jelly beans. I like the gels, to me they taste good except for the vanilla and espresso ones. Yuck. Steve - The plan im doing is one from BT 20 week 3xbalanced but since I only have 16 weeks before the race I decided to start at month 2 week 1 on the plan. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=41 I met with the coach with team in training when I signed up and she was really nice, but not sure how much experience she has in tri's. I decided I was going to us my plan for the race and use my resources like this group for input and help. I heard they have a really good swim coach but I have not met with her yet. The training with the team is going to start around the 1st of the week and Im only doing 1 swim, bike and run with them during the week. I still like to train alone, but I want to use a good strong group once a week for eah sport just to puh me harder. Steve are you doing Nations, I know Ellen signed up and you were talking about it. |

Master 2236![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Denison Texas | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDHi! A whirlwind weekend! I finished in 3:20, way down my ag group but I am generally happy with the results.. We are still on the road and I will post a more detailed race report when we get back to Texas. My swim went well, for me, no crisis, just slow. I did struggle with sighting and swimming straight, the only time I rolled on my back was to fix my goggles, I had lifted them to squint and see the next buoy and they didn't seal. The sun was rising in our eyes on the out bound leg. I did better than the guy from my wave my wife saw getting drug out of the water, undergoing cpr on a kayak and the hauled off in an ambulance. I was prepared to be ok with a 3:30 finish, secretly wanted 3:15 but dared to dream about 3:00. The day before I rode the course and was excited about a potentially very fast course that suited my strengths, Saturday was perfect conditions, but storms rolled over Saturday night, wind shifted and picked up and that hope was dashed

I was able to get my long bike/short run brick in but didn't feel great the rest of the day. Breakfast felt ok this morning, went to church and went out for my 1:15hr run. Back to the cramps. I did more walking then running but at least got it in. I'm hoping for it all to settle down |

Member 179![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGreetings, I'm back. It has taken me a long time to catch up since you are such a prolific group. So now I have read what has been going on and it is pretty impressive. George, I'm very excited that you are going to be at Nation'. If the weather is good, it will be fun. But Washington is a beautiful city and then you can cross it off your bucket list (although you could come back). I keep doing it because it is about 45 minutes from my house (at 4:30 on a Sunday morning). So today I did the Columbia Triathlon. That race may be like having children. After delivery you swear you will never do that again, but then you forget. So I did it last year and the run was not so good. This year the swim, bike , run was not so good. The difference is (of course) that I was slightly better prepared last year. It is very hilly. Since I am pretty new and don't have a lot of experience I can't compare it to other courses (I am sure Steve can). However, I finished and for that I was happy. About 10 minutes after I finished the announcer said that a very special thing was going to happen so we waited around and then he called a woman's name coming across the finish line and he handed the microphone to this guy, who got down on one knee and proposed. She said yes. It was pretty cool. They both did the race and they were there in ther tri suits posing for the cameras. So, back to the race. I can't swim straight. I have to figure that out. My goggles were very foggy and it was hard to spot the bouys. As for the bike, last year I did these 4-5 hour training bike rides in a 90 degree studio with 20 minute pick ups where my heart rate would get into zone 4.5. I did not do that this year. I am a slow runner anyway but the Columbia course is pretty hilly and that did not help. Plus after the bike my legs were not working so well. I think the morale of the story is that you need understannd what you are getting into and train accordingly. I did not do that and the results indicate that. But, life goes on. I am hoping to not take such a boneheaded approach when training for Nation's. I had a bunch of excuses, but today who cares. I am hoping with better planning and greater dicipline, it will work out. The best time for me to run is at 4:30-5:00 in the morning. The weather has not been great but I actually have a treadmill in my basement. It is so hard to find in the dark. That's my report. Ellen

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDJEFF - Beating your "contentment" goal for ten minutes is quite significant; you should indeed be happy with that. I guess you should also be thrilled that you weren't in the same situation as the guy hauled from the water. Very scary, that, and I hope he made it through the ordeal. Bright, rising suns are awful in a tri. I have had a few of them in my day, and they never cease to frazzle me. I know no one likes that at all....but that doesn't help me happiness level one bit! That's a very fine time you posted for the bike, and I'll be interested in hearing the ways in which it played to your strengths. And when you post more fully, remember nutrition info. I LOVE nutrition info!! Congrats on the first of -- I suspect -- many olys!! |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDELLEN - So glad you're here again, and thanks for the report. Even though you (coyly) didn't post any times, I see that you have already begun to dissect what all happened and what you need to do differently in the future. And I love your comparison of Columbia with childbirth! FWIW, Columbia is the toughest olympic course I have done. Way back when ('01 or so) it touted itself as THE toughest oly run around, and part of that is due to the bike being no picnic, either. I can't say the Columbia bike is the hardest oly ride I have done, but it's it the top small handful. The run, though, is a brute. There's that first twisty climb about 3 minutes out of transition......and then the steep slogs in the park, along with those mothers in the neighborhood. Yowzers!!!! As for swimming straight, Columbia is an excellent course at which to challenge that ability. It has several little angles to it, and if one messes up a sighting they can find themselves going astray quite easily. So hard to find the treadmil in the dark? Ha! |

Master 2236![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Denison Texas | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDRace report posted: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=253352&posts=1&start=1 My nutrition is in doubt due to circumstances, traveling, unfamiliar city and area, limited options and just being tired. I think I started off with a deficit, I know I did as far as sleep goes. I had some gatorade on the bike and took one Gu, I just took water on the run. I suffered some stomach issues on the bike and run like last week but not as bad, I consciously burped a few times into the lake to try to relieve that As far as the bike course, mostly fast rollers and some technical stuff, I blew through corners pretty quick, even made some passes that way, the corner marshals would be motioning to slow down and I would manage some pretty fast technical turns-the combination of just the right amount of cornering and good rollers suits me. There was one longish climb and some short steeper ones that I just down shifted and rolled over easy, grabbed the big ring at the top and power over. My run sucked-I have been doing 10 k runs under 1 hour-in the 50-52 min range for several weeks and a few 5k bricks under 30..right off the bike I knew I was in trouble, walked alot never got a good pace going. My choices are nutrition or bike pacing which speaks to bike fitness. My training as been so run focused lately in addition to being pre-occupied with the swim, I haven't given my cycling the training it needs to turn a fast bike split and still be able to run-as evidenced by the fact that I did neither! |

If I had those numbers in a race I would be jumping for joy. Keep up the great work. Ellen - Congrats on completing the race, that is the main goal. As for Washington Dc, I might have to cross it off the bucket list depending if the family goes with me. It truly is on my bucket list which I made about 5 months ago when I decided to get off the couch and enjoy life. Me, my brothers and a friend of mine would spend the days in Washington when we were little. One of my childhood best friends dad and my dad lived in VA when we were young. My friends dad worked in DC so on the weekdays we would ride in with him and run the streets until he got off work. I had so much fun doing that when I was young that I wanted my kids to experience it. So if they dont come up to the race with me in Sept, then DC will remain on the bucket list. Johanne - Awesome job on getting out and training even when you are sick, that takes a lot to do that and congrats. Sarah - Keep working at the bike, it will come and before you know it you will be hitting 20+mph. Well off to do a 58 minute ride and I hope I will have enough juice to make it to the pool. Have a great day everyone |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDSARAH - How often do you try to Mix it up" on the bike? That is, do you pretty much ride at a steady pace, or do play around some with different intensities/speeds for different lengths of time? This can be simple - 5' easy warm-up, 10' build to race-pace (with second 5' at race-pace), 10' steady, 10' race-pace, 10' cruise, 10' race-pace, 5' cruise/cool-down - and it knocks off an hour quite quickly. I just feel that bike speed is rewarded through efforts in which one actually feels what it's like to go fast(er). The same can be said for swimming and running, of course, but for most people it is not as easy to access speed in those areas as it is on the bike. Related to this is gearing and cadence. On the race-pace segments above, they should be accompanied by hard work. The cadence is best somewhat high (~85-90), but not much higher because that would have you spinning without generating any power (wattage). And you don't want the cadence too much lower, becasue that would mean you are grinding away AND likely having to work through some dead(er) spots in each pedal cycle. Let me know what you think, and we can refine it from there. |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDJEFF - Good reports -- both here as the anecdotal, and the formal one your link got me to (I don't know how to get there and do one of those reports myself!). Every thing you wrote about nutrition matters is very true, and I should've thought to mention that to you myself. I have done literally dozens of races (I'll count later) as drive-to/overnight events, and it took me a few years to get decent at avoiding some of the pitfalls such as weariness and finding good eating options. I don't have any concrete answers for that, I guess it's mostly just pacing myself on those aspects of the trip and always allowing enough time to cout for an eatery; that is, don't wait until 7:30 to head off looking for dinner! In talking about your run, you blame nutrition or bike pacing.....but I think most likely it's at least 50% not yet having learned to run effectively and comfortably 10km off the bike. Those other aspects can certainly be players (more on that later), but for most people new to olys it can come down to just needing to get used to how those legs feel for the first km or so after 40km of cycling. I have advised short and low footfall, but that won't necessarily work for everyone. I also aim for an actual sensation of running slower than I would like, even though my cadence is quite high (just short and low). But bike pacing can be key, and saving something for the run has to be considered in a pretty big way. That also is a matter of experience, just knowing your body's response to a certain pace on the bike.....and how it is going to handle the following run. The good side of K.C. for you was that now you have that first oly, and some numbers from it, and some recollection of how your body felt on both the bike and run, and you can start to finagle and tinker with all of that. It really is cool to se the pieces come toigether over time, as they do for just about everybody. That first race at a new distance is always a trip.....and then each subsequent one has an element or two less of the unknown about it. Try this, change that, alter something else --- and you're making progress! Voila! How are you feeling today? Any residual sorenesses? DOMS, maybe? |

I plan to be more mindful of my bike workouts and more bricks after intense rides. I had nice 3 mile runs after 50 mile rides, but not after intense rides. Focus on the swimming of course. The plan at first has lower swim volume but builds quickly. If I find another Oly, close to home, I will do that one too. There are some coming but they are too soon for me in terms of entry fees right now. If I find something in July/Aug that would be perfect. I might have a cheering section come down from KC to Branson in Sept. My wife will have something to do besides a triathlon supporters event-"Sit, Wait, Cheer" Hot muggy weather has arrived and temperatures will begin to climb that will help me prepare for Branson |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDELLEN - If you'll allow me to quibble some, pick a few nits, I'll say you didn't get slower. Your results show a slower time, but I suspect you are in fact intrisically as fast as you were last year. Your training was what undermined you some, not a deterioration in capability. You think? I say that because for some people, they are borderline crushed by what appear to be declining performances -- and I don't want you to feel that way at all. It seemed obvious to me that you were having a very hard being consistent with your training, mostly because of work commitments that got in your way time and time again. Yes? It is a relief to see you say "However, I'm not giving up". WHEW! One thing I neglected to say about Columbia yesterday is that because it is so early in the season it can be even more unforgiving to people who either live in the north or who have had trouble training consistently. I have mused in the apst about what it would be like to do that race in September, say last week of. That would make a big difference to me,a nd I'm sure it would for you, too. But it is where it is, and your school commitments do really well at throwing monkey wrenches into your training. Bah! Finally, your T1 shoot-the-breeze time was close to long enough to solve a Mideast crisis or two, i think! Edited by stevebradley 2011-05-23 10:55 PM |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDJEFF - Glad you're feeling fine, with tiredness being the only residual effect. No physio required for tiredness! That's an interesting distinction you make between brick runs after long rides vs intense rides. It makes perfect sense, and thinking about it just a little I realize that how I approach those two reflects on how I approach the run in races different lengths. Thinking about it still, while trying to type (multi-tasking!!), I generally look forward more to bricks after shorter and more intense rides. Now I have to think about why that is. Branson is in September, yes? Lots of time to get ready! That'll be a case of bricks being rewarded that are easier runs off of longer and less intnense rides - not that you want to pass the whole summer doing just those, however! Another random thought: In olys, I aim to change my running technique as early into the run as I can, whereas for half-irons I will stick with it for however long it is feeling comfortable for me. In practical terms, that means that the shorter and more compact/lower stride for the first few hundred meters will be switched to my "racing" stride as soon as I get my legs fully back after the ride. For HIM, though, I don't put any timeline on when I come out of that transition running form. It usually happens --- but just not within a kilometer....or two....or even three? An oly 3-6 weeks out from Branson would be ideal, but is that the time down there that races of that distance or longer are echewed due to the temps? I'll see what I can find; vicarious race-searching is always such fun! |

I'm finding that it can be hard to get calories in when you are eating healthy. Go figure! I'm trying to eat 'whole' foods rather then frozen/processed type stuff and that gives me quite a bit to eat so it's all good.
