Morning!

I made it to masters twice this week (almost more than during my IM training - ha!). So I have a question. The coach has been trying to get me to kick, because I do not kick at all. Occasionally I'll move my feet to keep my legs up, but I think I naturally have good ok position in the water, legs don't sink, etc. so I just don't kick.

She's been trying to get me to kick. I know typically triathletes don't kick much, and try to save the legs for the bike and run, but I think most people probably kick more than me. So I figured I'd try to work on kicking since I don't have any more tris this year.

Anyway - what is 2 beat kick, 6 beat kick. Is that the number of kicks for each right & left arm? Or just one arm?

I tried to count my kick and I just can't figure out what I'm doing. Does it really matter how many kicks you do? Is there a drill to help work on that? I feel like I just kick and kick and kick, with no rhythm or pattern. Is that normal?

When I started swimming a few years ago I felt very clumsy. The coach at that time was helping me with my arms and body rotation. I remember one day it just clicked, and all of a sudden I felt very fluid in the water, and I "got" what he was saying.

Will the kick be similar and one day it will just click for me?

In 2-beat, you kick twice for every cycle (a cycle is 2 arms strokes counting both arms). A 6 beat kick is 6 kicks per cycle (2 arm strokes).

Its a little bit tough to translate kicking in the pool to kicking in a wetsuit.  When you're in a wetsuit your legs are wrapped in bubbles, which changes the kick.

Personally, I find that the number of beats per kick is individual specific.  I have a two beat kick (I also have srange modified butterfly kick).  If its something you want to work on, I can send you drills, but I don't think its something you NEED to work on.

I probably don't NEED to work on it, but I kind of want to. I can use all the help I can get in the water. I'm probably overthinking the whole kick, but what if I'm kicking 3 or 5, not 2 or 4??

If you want to work on it, its totally fine.

I'll pull the drills together.

kaburns1214 - 2012-08-30 12:50 PM I swam for the 2nd time post-injury today.  800 yards and my back stroke is faster than my freestyle.  My shoulder is a little sore post-swim but no pain during swimming.  If I can get through another week of swimming, I will be allowed to sign up for Poconos 70.3.

That's great, when is Poconos 70.3?

September 30.

Didn't I send you the "you're going to feel like crap during taper" e-mail?

Could I get that so I may be prepared for the pain next year? Thanks!

Here's what I sent to Karen pre-taper --

"You'll notice you start tapering a little bit this week with the run and then go into full blown taper next week.  I'm warning you that you're likely going to be sore and antsy and your workouts will feel crappy -- that's normal.  You're body is recovering from a lot of work."

Most people feel crappy during taper.  Its not until a day or two before the race that you start to feel good and then should click on race day.

Ah tapering.  The most sluggish I ever feel.  Such a craptastic feeling.

So I finished my 2 workouts for today.  This week is I hate Kelly week BTW.  I say that in the most loving way of course.

That made me laugh!  I'm pretty sure my neighbors wonder who this Kelly chick is, because I would curse her name out loud many times while doing mile repeats!

There was yesterday's swim workout that just left my shoulders wrecked.  Mostly from the breast and butterfly that were in there and then today's hill repeats on the treadmill followed by low cadence intervals on the trainer.  I need a nap.

If I remember correctly, you want to be able to go fast at Oilman.  If you've changed your goal, we can change the workouts.

Quit making sense.  Had to stop and get a bucket during hill repeats.

Thanks everyone for the words.  All the things I'm feeling appear to be pretty "normal" for this stage of the season.  Like I said - monkey butt.  Had a decent run this afternoon, so that made me feel a little better.

Kelly - Glad to hear you're back in the pool!  That's fantastic.  I hope you're able to race the 70.3 in Sept.

Karen - I'm not sure about the kicking.  I kick a lot more than I probably ought to be kicking, but I just go with it (though I do notice that I don't use my legs as much in the wetsuit).  I'm happy to hear you're back at masters swim.  Keep it up!

Scott - Hill Repeats?  Ack.  It will pay off later!!

August's totals:
Bike:26h 13m 29s  - 471.42 Mi
Run:16h 54m 21s  - 104.59 Mi
Swim:9h 07m 28s  - 33090.42 Yd

August is in the books as today is a rest day.  I think I'm finding that a comfortable running amount for me is 20-24 mpw.  If I go beyond that, then injuries start cropping up.  There are at least half a dozen spots that are questionable in my lower body.  I was running around 35 mpw when I got the stress fracture.  Even with the IM training, I think I'm going to have to keep that volume in that comfort amount in order to stay injury-free.

One more week until Cedar Point!  I'm starting to get excited!

You know you don't need to be running 35 mpw.

I know you're wicked fidgety at the moment.  RELAX.  REST.  I know its hard.  A lot of your niggling issues will clear up post - Rev 3 with some serious rest.

Considering I started from scratch at the beginning of the month, it wasn't that bad bike-run volume wise.

August's totals:
Bike:50h 10m 35s  - 810 Mi
Run:14h 28m 50s  - 95.25 Mi
Swim:22m 18s  - 1300 Yd

I thought this was interesting:

A dressage horse with muscle wastage on the right hind quarters caused by injuries suffered in a fall. Big daddy Rocktape is used to provide proprioceptive feedback in an attempt to activate the muscles which aren't currently firing. Initial results are encouraging.

It was super bike heavy because I couldn't swim and my run volume was limited.

Sigh.  I have a buddy who used to swim at Pitt.  He went 1:05ish at IMTX, but ran a 5:30+ marathon.  So what does he decide to focus on???? His swim.  Ugh.

Its all about ROI.  With a 1:05 swim, the ROI is so small.

You know my opinion, once you are comfortable with hte swim distance, focus is on the bike and the run until you're fast enough that your swim becomes a limiter.

Another friend pointed out to him that average KQ'ers in his AG go 1:07 in the swim and 3:4x on the run.  He already could go around 1 hour on the swim.  Why continue to focus on it?  Just can't get through to him.  Frustrating.

1:40 this morning on a surpsingly warm and humid day. I was suppose to do 2:00 but I ran out of water and my heart rate stayed up after about 1:10. I had to walk a couple of up hills to get it down. Legs really felt heavy today. I didn't feel light on my feet at all. I will probably do the other 20 tonight and then do some good stretching afterwards.

Maybe because he has a background in swimming and is competitive about the time he puts up?  Or maybe he gets more enjoyment from the swim training?

I agree with you though.  It sounds like he needs to work more on the bike than the swim so he can put up a better marathon time.
