Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() mambos - 2012-09-12 10:56 AM I wanted to stop in and thank everyone for the prayes and thoughts of support on Monday. It was an extremely difficult day and the decisions that my brother and I had to make were almost impossible. To be able to seperate the selfish thoughts of not wanting to lose a loved one from what would be best and what the loved one would want is impossible. Ultimately we decided that our Father would not want to be restricted to machines and a bed for any given time let alone the rest of his life. On Monday at 1:05pm my father passed to a better place. I have accepted this knowing that he is in a better place and can finally rest comfortably after several years of struggling. During this process I was informed by a DR that he told Dad 3 yrs ago that his chance of survival then was slim. Of course Dad did not tell us this and managed to fight through that which amazed the DR's. Just shows the stubborn bullheadness that exists in him and his will to spend more time with the grandkids, which was his ultimate drive. The sorrow of his passing has started to subside now as we move on to celebrating his life and achievements! Thank you again for the support, even though I do not know each of you personnally it is nice to have a place to express my thoughts not only in training but in lifes struggles also.
I will continue to offer prayers for you and your family. The days will pass with highs and lows as you think about your dad and the impact he had on your life and the lives of those he was close to. Take peace in knowing that all of us will pass down this same road and none of us would like to burden our families any more than we must. Take comfort in knowing what yo have already stated above, and what you have known for better than a year now, that we are more than a mentor group, we are friends. As friends we can share our struggles and help bare each others burdens. |

I'm not sure if they would take an order from a non-member, but it doesn't hurt to ask if it interests you. There's contact information for their officers on their website: https://sites.google.com/site/universityofmichigantriathlon/ Some of the website seems a bit outdated, but I think the listed president/vp are current officers.
Honestly, I am slightly relieved for this week off I am giving myself. Although it does not exactly make me happy to think that my half marathon would be better with a full week of running, I think I need the forced rest... I am really hoping I will be good to go by next week to get in 3 quality weeks of running before 2 weeks of reduction before race day. I checked the site out and maybe I'll see if they can order a tri kit for me next year or when I come into some money. I have a feeling it is only for the athletes but I may give it a shot anyway. I found the girl that raced on Sunday and she won her AG. Nisa Penland is her name. Yeah, I kinda had to stalk her a little bit to see if it was her. Dirk I think Tracy had suggested this way back when but if the U of M tri kit doesn't pan out maybe you should think about putting together a Junkies tri kit with the colors of U of M. To be honest I am seriously considering doing some like that for IMWI. It would be very cool to represent and wear that on the run assuming I make it the far of course. I think this would look better This would look awesome right where the chamois meets the saddle near the particular part of the anatomy that it seems to resemble. And just for your info Matt, I saw a triathlete from OSU as she was coming in to finish.........I had been done racing, taken the time to get some ART done on my foot, checked the results for my race, eaten my post race meal, spent some time talking to Lis and the girls and walked over the the finishing chute to wait fro Brenda to come through and after about 30 minutes..........she came through to the finish. And also to remind you the UM triathlete won her AG. (And I actually smoked her too. But, it wasn't nearly the crushing defeat I handed the OSU athlete.) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I decided to break the world record for the longest race report. I wanted to dump my thoughts in minute detail as best I could remember them. Little silly stuff like how I go about getting my feet in to my shoes or how I dismount might be interesting.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() KWDreamun - 2012-09-12 10:06 AM I volunteered for IMFL this year, Nov 3. Not sure what I'll be doing as I have not heard back except that I was in. I volunteered for security??? I heard that was the best cause you can walk around and do things. No, I'm not signing up to do IMFL next year, maybe 2014??? but that is a LONG way away and I'll be 53 then, not sure if I can take it at that age... I do know it fills up VERY fast! Hope everyone is feeling better! I was talked into doing this race for 2013, so if I can get in seeing as it fill up fast I will be doing it! The woman and her husband that I met a few weeks ago riding on the Madison loop are the ones who talked me into it and are going to try to get in too, he had signed up to volunteer this year at IMW so he could sign up to do IMW next year but has changed his mind to do an easier one for his first and she suggested it might be a better race for me to redeem myself. As far as feeling better....The dr added steroids to my meds cuz I just wasn't getting better, I have yet to go back to work this week, I can't ever remember being this sick ![]() |

IMFL will sell out pretty quickly, I would jump on it as soon as registeration opens. It is typically considered a little bit friendlier to first timers since the run and bike course is flat. The toughest part of IMFL might be that it is an ocean swim in the gulf. I hope you're able to get into it. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Owlgirl, congrats on the pullups...lol I remember those days... Jo, IMFL fills up very fast, lots of people choose this race top qualify for Kona. However, it is an ocean swim, and depending on the weather could be rough or calm, get used to tasting salt water, it will affect your stomach, or it does mine, it is a very flat course, however we do have a lot of breezes. Also there is NO shade. It could be VERY hot or cold. It is a great race and the one I choose mainly because it is close to our home. Wear PLENTY of sunscreen. Allison, love your new pic! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jo, also if you do this race, do not overinflate your tires. Every year while people are out in the swim, we hear things that sound like 22's being shot. It is tires popping from the heat. |

![]() I just noticed I have a bent spoke on my tri bike. Do I need to rush it to the bike shop? I am planning to participate in a 60 mile bike tour on Saturday and will probably use that bike. We've already contacted the race director to ask if he minds if we ride our tri bikes instead of road bikes as Tiff has loaned her road bike out to a friend, switched the pedals to cages and everything. He said it would be fine and encouraged us to come anyway. |

First the soda...It was 3 hours before the race so it didn't bother me. And I remember reading a race report from a PRO who uses mtn dew in her speedfill bottle! I'm sure it goes flat pretty quickly and after that it's a good form of glucose, water and caffeine all with a nice flavor! Yes, I used to have to avoid dairy for 24 hours before a race when I was younger. But ONLY races. And it was the combination of the adrenaline that would course through my body for hours and hours before a race along with the dairy. Adrenaline shuts off digestion and whatever is in the gut sits there and festers! I don't get nervous anymore...so no worries. I can eat almost anything before a race now.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just checked into the NYC marathon site and I have been assigned my BIB#, starting time, wave and corral. I have BIB#58092 and I am starting late at 10:55 AM. Geez I've never seen a number that high but with 40,000 people running it I can understand why. I am getting pretty excited about doing this now. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() That's awesome Tony. Though it seems weird to have a bib number higher than the number of entrants. Don't they say the object is to be your bib number? You should have that in the bag! I have a bike maintenance questions. I admit I'm totally clueless about maintaining my bike. I can pump the tires, pretty much other than that I get on and ride. Before my last race, I went for a test ride with my seat back on and found that my front derailleur would not shift from a larger to a smaller chain ring. It wasn't a problem in the race because I knew I could get away in the 50 for the whole race, but I'd like to do some big hills this weekend and I'll need to be able to get into the 39 and back up. If I use the shifter to downshift, the cable seems to release (it goes totally loose), but the derailleur doesn't move much. I can easily push it over, but it doesn't go on it's own. It does pull the chain back to a larger ring fine. Is the spring dead or do you think it's dirty/rusty/whatever? I tried to lube it up and move it back and forth, but it still won't shift on it's own. Any ideas? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You all may have seen this. Members of USAT get a monthly email newsletter and this link was contained in this month's newsletter. It's interesting. Galloway talks about long runs and using a MM (Magic Mile) as a predictor of marathon and half marathon race pace and as a guideline for setting training pace. Notice how slow he wants people to run...

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Warren, I could quickly tell if I were inspecting it but since I can't I will explain how you can diagnose this. But first, did you take your bike apart to any degree before this happened? Or did anyone work on it, make adjustments? When you shift the front shifter all the way in the direction of the smaller chainring, did I read you correctly as saying the cable is actually slack? You can actually move it around with your finger? If so, then the shifter did it's job. Now it's the job of the derailleur, using spring tension to move inward. It won't move inward if you are not pedaling because the chain which is on the big ring will hold it up. But if you were to pick up the rear wheel and spin the pedals it should then be pushed off the big ring in to the little one. If that doesn't happen, and that slack is still in the front derailleur's cable (right there near the derailleur, don't check this elsewhere on the bike) then you have 1 of 2 problems with the front derailleur. possibility #1, the inside limit screw has been turned in so that the derailleur's movement inward has come to a stop against this screw. If this is the case, you will not be able to 'help' the derailleur move inward any further. possibility #2, there is a problem with the derailleur physically. Could be the return spring malfunctioning. Could be the derailleur body being hindered physically by debris stuck in it or rust/grime/dirt stuck in the pivots. Could be the derailleur is bent. Don't forget to look for a loose mounting bolt where the derailleur is attached to the frame.
If you have slack in the shifter cable, but it's not near the derailleur itself, but elsewhere, say on the top tube or down tube (wherever it runs) then the cable housing is the problem and it's binding the shifter cable.

![]() | ![]() Thanks Jeff. No one worked has worked on the bike - I had been using the Tri bike for maybe the last two weeks before Timberman, and this bike was sitting unused for 3 weeks. The cable does go loose, and I can move the derailleur by hand, but it doesn't shift while pedaling. So it looks like it's number 2. I'll check the spring as best I can, and make sure nothing is bent, and give it a more thorough cleaning. Edited by wbayek 2012-09-13 3:00 PM |

Sorry, gone all day and just got home. Yes, I can put up a photo and no it does not wobble or rub the brake pad. I'll work on the photo. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That spoke doesn't look seriously compromised. I would have that spoke replaced the next time you bring your bike in for service or tune-up. But if the rim is true (or close) ride it!
