Does anyone have the soft HR monitor strap for your Garmin?  Mine seems to be acting weird.  I get crazy high numbers and then it comes back down to normal range.  I used my old Polar yesterday and it worked fine.

Is it dying?  Should I just buy a new one?

I don't have the soft strap but mine began to act funny  a few weeks ago, immediately before my fist HIM, and I took it for the abnormally cool temps.  It could be that the strap needed some moisture to get it functioning correctly.  My HR monitor seems to act up until I get a little sweat going.

The only other thing might be battery.  When my battery was getting low I would get some really high numbers for short periods of time.

Earthquakes???  No thanks!!  I'd say keep the smaller one too.

Well I hope it's back to training for me today.  Yesterday I planned a 7 mile run and a swim but it was raining in the morning and the pool wasn't opened for laps when I had time.  Later, when it wasn't raining, Lis and I went out to lunch and shopping........for my birthday gifts...............Lights for the front and back of my bikes since I ended a ride on Thursday night in low light conditions, a new wedgie since I am tired of switching the one I had back and forth, a new CO2 inflater and cartridges and one of these.............

Now I wish I had another race this season!!  I actually don't have it yet but I may be making the purchase today at a LBS.  I have only one quandary about the purchase.  What color scheme should I buy?  Lis doesn't like the above scheme and I prefer something other than white/gray.  I actually like the red/white/blue colors the best but with a black and red-ish orange bike I think that might be a little weird.

What do you all think for colors?  And no Brenda!  I will not be getting Pink!

Oh, they also have a slime lime green like my trademarked visor I wear for all of my races.  They have other colors (many) that are a possibility as well but I am totally undecided which to get.

Owlgirl, good luck w/ the earthquakes.  Hope you had no damage and get no more quakes.

IMNY, gone...I hate to see any race go away.

Dirk, happy b'day, get the helmet that stands out the most so you can find your bike easier, maybe get flashing lights on it.  They all are really nice and U can't go wrong w/ any.  Maybe get one to match your bike.

Tony, several things about the NYmarathon.  I talked w/ wife who LOVES distance running and the 58 is the corral (not sure how to spell it) you are in.

Also there have been problems w/ that many people peeing prior to the race so take a black garbage bag and wear it prior to the race, you know pop your head thru it, it will keep you warm and the dew off (big problem here in FL), then U can pee whenever U want and no one can see.

She also said take water with you since you are in a later corral, a lot of the water will be gone.  She had a friend that went to get water at 1 stop and it was pure vodka.  Try swigging that..lol but it does reduce the pain.  lol

Warren, let us know about the bike.

Hey everyone, I not going to pretend I was able to keep up this past week and Im sure I missed a lot.  But a few things to comment on;

Earthquakes??  Are you sure they were not just the after affect of alien spacecrafts landing?  Government cover-up?  I think it is odd that they were spread out like that and I believe I heard on the news that they were not related to one specific event......Hmmmm

The black bag advice for NY marathon cracks me up.  Some friends and I made a trip to time square for new years back in the day.  The place was so crowded there was no way to find a bathroom.  After awhile I noticed groups of people circling up creating a "bathroom" in the middle. It was quite disgusting but I guess if you gotta go, you gotta go!

Dirk: here is my advice for a new helmet,

For me I am prepping for a good Saturday. Olivia and Zachary both have soccer games and then we are headed to Isaacs football games, and by games I mean multiple games.  His team is set-up in A-squad and B-squad, with the seperation being grade in school and also weight.  Due to the amount of kids new to the team Isaac had been pushed down to B-squad, but since he has scored every touchdown for B-squad he has been promoted to starting running back for A-squad.   But because of the number of kids on B-squad he has to play on that team also.  Going to be a good day of football, but I bet Isaac is going to be tired at the end of the day.

No.....no damage at all.  They weren't even big enough to knock anything off shelves.  A big quake a couple years ago moved our wood stove, though!  That one was scary!

Dirk it looks like you can't go wrong with any of those colors schemes and BTW that looks like a pretty sweet aero helmet. I like the red, white and blue one and I think the black and gold looks pretty cool. I would be tempted though to do something that matches the bike as well.

Karl that was too funny I almost spit my coffee out reading this. I have heard alot of the same stuff to be honest though. I think my ferry is scheduled to head over at 7:15 am. It is a 30 minute ride over and then they bus you over to the starting line and depending on how the traffic is it could take a while. So I am figuring I will have time to kill over there for sure as I am starting at almost 11 am. I'll be on the look out for the water station serving vodka though I may need it later on. Hopefully it is one of the water stations after mile 20 LOL.

Doesn't sound like we have any Junkies racing this weekend but I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend. I will be heading out soon to get my last long run in before I start the HIM taper this week. I am going to try and get an 18 miler in today. It is just beautiful out here today. I usually dread the long runs like this but for some reason today I am really looking forward to it. That is pretty unusual, I hope it's a good sign because I am feeling pretty good today.

Well here is my birthday booty...........

..................Well not that booty!

I got the white helmet because it was on sale for $109. BRAND NEW!!!  That's a killer deal!  The cheapest I have found it on eBay is $120 + shipping.  I really was considering the red, white and blue one they didn't have it.  White was all they had.   i may try to figure a way to customize it.

The shoes were $70 BRAND NEW too!  And the leg warmers were $11.  The LBS is having a moving sale and trying to get rid of everything they can.  Some of the prices are RIDICULOUS!!!  I wish I had more money.  As it is we spent A LOT more money than planned with some of the stuff I got yesterday.  Lis was willing to let me spend about $180 on the helmet so I really got the shoes and the helmet for that money.

Needless to day I ahve had a very good birthday.  Now all I need are some race wheels....................and Lis is wanting me to have some too.  But that will have to wait until next season.  I am totally happy with that.  She has been very good to me this year with all of the purchases I have been able to make.  It is also helping that we aren't paying for 2 kids at a parochial school this year too.

Tracy, I wear the soft strap Garmin HR monitor.  I remember reading the instructions before I used it for the first time, and it says that you should moisten the pad before you run.  I don't ever do that, but today I noticed that it had my heart rate up really high in the first mile when I know that it wasn't.  I'm pretty sure it wasn't a battery issue because mine is fairly new.  I would try that trick before replacing the battery or doing other things.

Redi-Bike near Jefferson Pointe.  They have the ladies model shoes that I purchased for a similar price.  They don't have any more helmets as I took the last one but they have a lot of stuff marked down.  Michael (the owner) wants to get rid of as much as possible before the end of the year and he doesn't want to move any more than he has too...........You better get there fast because I can't imagine it's going to last long but I think they are closed on Sunday's.

Dirk, Happy Birthday and glad to see you made out very well and got the helmet. I just reminded my wife that birthday is coming up in Nov and showed her how well you made out. That did not go over well LOL, she thinks I've already invested too much this year and she is probably right. But I am very happy to see you get a great deal on your stuff.

Well I did get my long run in today and it went so much better than I ever could have imagined it would. I was planning on doing 18 miles and I wound up doing 20 miles. The weather was perfect today maybe a little bit on the windy side but I mean just great for running. I ran at slow and easy pace. I figured the first 6 would be a warm up, the next 6 would be the run and the last 6 would be my cool down. I think I was running the first 12 miles in the 11:00 - 11:30 or 11:40 range just taking my time. I had to slow myself down which is pretty amusing to me, I'm slow to begin with so that's not hard to do. After mile 12 I was running negative splits with the last 3 to 4 miles in the 10:00's I need to double check the Garmin but I am sure this was the case. This is just amazing to me! I can't believe I still had gas in the tank!

I think all the triathlon training has paid huge dividends for me. I think all the biking has definitely helped improved my run fitness as well as all the slow running I have been doing this year. I feel like I am in the best shape of my life. This run was awesome, my nutrition was spot on and afterwards I felt great. I am not sore or feeling worn out. I proved this afterwards by going shopping with my wife afterwards and pushing the cart around all over the place. No issues and I was even going aero on the shopping cart. I feel like a machine just like Arnold in the Terminator movies maybe even like the newer T-1000 model LOL. All kidding aside I am feeling really good about my conditioning for the HIM and I am feeling much better about the marathon too. I was feeling like I would be undertrained for the marathon but I am thinking I may be able to do better than I expect to do.

Tony,

Thanks for the Bday wishes.  It was most certainly a good day for me but then whenever I am around my wife and girls it's a good day.

It sounds like you had a really good run.  The weather is going start helping all of us get more comfortable and feel a lot  better during our outdoor WO's over the next couple of months.  After the summer heat that we have all had to deal with, how could we not be relieved by the much cooler temps?
