Thanks but how can they give me my bike when I need to put my shoes, helmet, glasses, shirt, pants, socks, sunscreen, etc on?

you come out of the water, get your t1 bag and head into the changing tent. You put all that on first and when you are done and heading to the bikes they call out your number and someone gets it for you.

I'm heading to LP Jun 1-3 for some training, flying into Albany and driving the rest, I don't really want to ship my bike. Does anyone know if there is a good place to rent a road bike for a few days or should I suck it up and just travel with bike?

You set up your bike at the rack as you want it - computer on, nutrition on, etc. Some prefer to carry their nutrition from transition. But otherwise all of your transition prep is done in the changing tent, so think of your T1 and T2 bags as your "transition space" and plan them the way you would your physical space in a shorter distance race.

Check to see if Placid Bike has a bike for rent that would work for you.

Yep, as Kathy mentioned, you could check out Placid Planet.  High Peaks Cyclery is another one.

To combine what Kristin & Lesley said.

Your bike is the only thing at the bike rack.  But you can have your bottles & bento box on the bike ready to go.  Just nothing on the ground.  Everything else is in your T1 & T2 bags (bike shoes, helmet, sunscreen, etc), which are stored in numbered racks in the oval.  So you come out of swim, grab your bag, head to changing tent (volunteer will put your wetsuit in your bag & your bag back on the rack) head out of changing tent and grab your bike off the rack or from a volunteer if they got it for you and brought it to the end of your row.   When done the bike, a volunteer will take your bike, you run around the oval to where the bags are, grab your T2 bag from your numbered spot, head into the changing tent (volunteer will put T2 bag back too) then out of changing tent to start the run.  Pretty seamless process.

LazyMarathoner - 2010-05-18 10:22 AM Just got back from a magical weekend in LP. I got some nice time in on the course as well as some new rides I haven't done before. The buoys are out but you'd have to be made of neoprene to swim, the water was f r i g i d. The weather was spectacular, highs near 70 and clear skies with sun. We ended up staying until 8pm last night and getting home ridiculously late because we were enjoying it so much. I'm heading back in 11 days, can't wait!

The out and back has a bridge out so that road is temporarily closed, not sure when it will be open. Otherwise the course was in very good shape. I wasn't really there to train, this was a vacation, so I'll try to fit some real training in next time!

This is posted on the IMLP website on the "Course" page.

** IMPORTANT 2010 INFORMATION **

The bridge over the West branch of the Ausable River on the Haselton Road section of the Ironman Lake Placid bike course is currently being replaced. The project is scheduled to be completed in time for the July 25 race. Training athletes should, however, be aware that a detour utilizing Bonnieview Road and John Bliss Road currently connects to the far end of Haselton Road. In the event that the bridge project is not completed in time for the race, an alternate bike course will be posted. Please check this website for updates as the construction season progresses.

I was playing on Mapmyride and if they close Hazelton, you can go up to to 86, then take a rt, and then go to the turn around point - it meets up AFTER the bridge by the cemetaray and goes out.

I would guess that they might do this as a second option, but I'm not sure.  The hill profile is almost identical, so might do that on Saturday for my ride as I want to get in the whole distance.

here's a map I created.. thoughts? http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/ny/wilmington/937127427757160041&...

Hi all, my understanding regarding the bridge repair on the out-n-back is... if its not in we would stay on Rt 9 after hitting Jay, instead of turning left on 86 and going up the Jay Hill. We would continue on Rt 9 until we are just outside of Ausable Forks then turn around there (Granite Co.) and head back to Jay and up hill on 86. I live in area and just story I heard. Take it for what it's worth. Cool

congrats on a great race in Florida Dan!

Thanks guys!  It was a tough race and I really debated signing up for Lake Placid.  IM is a lot of work, but I have to see if I can do it one more time.  Can't punk out now.

I see lots of running in my future... LOTS!!!

Maybe I'll ride  1 of the course I put up and 1 of the other.  Out and back is about 7 miles each way, right?

If you feel you must do the exact mileage and need 14 miles to add on, I did this little loop as a warm up on Sunday and found it to be a very nice ride. It started at the whiteface lodge which is a bit further into town so it will be slightly shorter depending on the starte/end point.
