Hi all.. i'm here

Have another finish line- did an indoor tri yesterday at LTF. My neighbor Dee did it as her very first event, it was a blast! The RR is in my log.

Diane, whatever you do with running mileage, I would highly recommend checking out www.jeffgalloway.com if you aren't already familiar with his method and philosophy behind run/walk. That is how i run, exclusively, and I can't say enough good about it. Until very recent orthodics, JG method kept my shin happy and in check for the past 4 years

Billy, my friend.... i'm afraid I have to admit defeat this month. There is no way I can even try to catch up to you-not with it being 4 days away from the marathon... i'm tapering and am trying really, really hard not to overdo it and then pay for it in the race.. Month isn't over, but i'm fairly certain you've got this one!! But we can do a rematch, right?? *wink wink*

Lena, I totally understand.  But if you don't mind, I need some clarification.  Correct me if I am wrong.

1.   You lose, I win

2.   Men rule, women drool

3.   I am a beast, you are just a kitten

4.   You will do wonderful in you marathon, I will be pulling for you the whole way

5.   I value your friendship, you inspire me

6.   You are baking me a cake, I am eating it.

Did I leave anything out?

Billy, hahhahhah... underneath all that, who's really a kitten here? Do we even need a ruling lol?
I'll gladly bake you a cake, but you have to come and get it, brotha! And if (no, WHEN) i win next time, I get a nice steak dinner-yeah, baby!

Ok, Questions for EVERYONE! Please weigh in if you have any advice to offer. I'm trying to stay upbeat and positive and care-free, but with this being my very first marathon, it's a bit difficult hee

Specifically, RACE MORNING:

What do I eat? (want to make sure i eat enough? I had a banana and an uncrustable before my last Half and it seemed wonderful)

When do I stop eating? (my MIL was telling me she stops eating 2 hours before the race, is that right?)

When do I stop drinking?

How much do i drink to hydrate properly that morning? (I'll be using Infinit for the whole race, and will stash a couple of GUs as added insurance for the last 6 miles)

Any mental tricks to stop the freak out? heheh

Also, ANY tips you can give me for the rest of the week? John has been a HUGE help in streamlining my training, and my sports doc has offered advice on my mileage that helped, as well (he's an ultramarathoner)... but i'm just figuring maybe i'm forgetting to ask some questions and more insight is always good...

Sorry so many questions, can you tell i'm getting nervous?

Lena, Lena, Lena...

You know the answer to all of your questions - NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY!!!

What did you eat the day of your 20 miler? When did you stop eating? etc... if it worked for the 20 miler, and the rest of your long training runs, it'll work the day of the race...

repeat after me: NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY... NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY... NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY

ok, I'm done

Lena - LOL!  I think I was in the same state about 2 wks ago.  Diane is right, you have been doing this all along.  Stick with what you know and what you have been working with. As for the nerves, one trick I do is start writing my RR (in my head) prior to the race.  You would be surprised how going thru it that way helps to make sure you have everything covered ahead of time.

Good luck!!!

Diane, i know about nothing new on race day, of course. But, I didn't watch my nutrition that closely on the training runs and sometimes ate late, for one simple reason-i ran all my LRs on the path, and knew that bathroom would always be available LOL. This is quite different. I'm not too worried about crashing from lack of energy, but more so about stuff not being in my system at the wrong time, that's all.

I'm at a point where I never have to use the restroom at all on Half-Marathons, but a full Marathon is a brand new (and scary) dog, so I know I can still get some helpful tips from others' experience. I'm totally rolling with the rule of nothing new on race day. My sole nutrition will be Infinit (and a couple of GUs for last few miles), which I've run with all my long runs 14 miles on. It's the pre-race jitters I really need help with.

Gary, first of all.. I'm so sorry about not commenting on your RR earlier-When did I turn into this jerk who forgets to say CONGRATS to a friend and gets all wrapped up in her own worries? UGH!!!! My friend, you did AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was crying reading your RR at times and LOVED seeing your pics in there to go along with the story. I remember constantly thinking how amazing your journey was, how I completely understood Billy's comment about standing there, watching you cross the finish line and wishing it were him, and thinking I want to do a HIM, too! And while I know I"m nowhere near ready for one, the sneaky thought keeps creeping in my head that I could totally train and do it! And I probably will, in a couple of years. THank you for being such an inspiration! Just awesome to live through some of your glorious glimpses with you!!! Nicely done!!!!!

Off to do a 4 mile run and test the only new item i have -lol- a fuel pack with two 20 oz bottles. Planning to mix 2 scoops of Infinit into each one (so 2 hours would be covered) and have 3 baggies with powder ready to go in the pockets (ok, i hate the term Fanny Pack, so mine has POCKETS!! hehe), and will mix them up at aid stations. COuldn't train this way, because there is no water on the path anywhere, so had to run with a hydration pack... so, testing it today to make sure the fit is good and comfortable.

Ok, my novel of the day is over... comment, people, comment!!

Morning all!
Did my first night of the bike training plan last night.  Very good, it will definitely help my biking.  Swam yesterday, was supposed to be another easy swim to stretch out but I was amazingly frustrated at Verizon wireless business and took it out on the swim.  No clue on my speed but swam 800m (I can still remember when that was an impossible dream) popped out of the pool and off to showers.  Felt better.

Lena - First, no worries.  Life gets in the way and to tell you the truth I have received a lot of support from this group.  The RR was gravy.  Sorry about making you cry, didn't realize my times were that bad (just kidding!!!).  BTW, I read yours, nice job on the spinning, you rocked it!

Billy - will call you back today.

Hi y'all,

We're back in Freddy Beach after a glorious week aboard the Crown Princess cruising the Western Caribbean. This was our first cruise but for sure won't be our last!! Managed to get in 3 treadmill runs and 1 open water swim during the week and in spite of the amazing food, didn't put on any poundage.

Will try to read back through the posts as time permits over the next few days.

Peter

PS - haven't forgotten about the maple syrup requests. I have the goods and now will find boxes and packing material to get it sent off.

PPS - thanks Lena for the translation service!

Good to have you back.  We are booked on our tenth cruise for the week of Thanksgiving, best value for your dollar in the world.  Looking forward to your world famous syrup.  I would be glad ot send you some money for shipping if you would give me a paypal account.  Just let me know.

On another note, I HATE *&(^%$ DRILLS IN THE POOL!   Makes me feel totally inept.  Took 1 hour to get 1500 yards, I suck.

Hi All!!!!
Welcome back from vacation Pete!!!! Glad you were able to get in some training.

Lena you will be fine.....no worries. You have done the training, just race and enjoy!!! Try to sleep well the few nights before the race because its hard to get a great night sleep before the race. Thats my only advice other than HAVE FUN!!!!

Billy I couldnt agree with you more...I hate drills. I did masters for a while and it was fun to have others that can push you when you are doing drill work.

I have been OWS at least once a week. Temps still in the 50's but OK for up to an hour. Sure beats the chlorine box.

My foot still sux...probably going to need surgery...but recovery is relatively quick. I havent run in about three weeks, but getting in alot of swimming and biking.

Dianne your biking has really improved!!!!!!!!!

Hey all!!!

Freddy!!! Glad your back!

Billy - It takes a someone substantially more dedicated then I to do those drills, you don't suck, you rock!!  I saw you called yesterday.  All day meetings with the new exec, meet and greet last night.  Will try to call you tomorrow as today is a duplicate of yesterday.

Mav - So sorry to hear about your foot!  Good luck with that and hope you are back to running ASAP.

Biking tonight, wanted to swim today also but no such luck.  Will return to running this weekend.  I keep forgetting I have another tri May 8th then I am done until July.  Want to concentrate on IM training.

Have a great day everyone!

Ok I'm not very happy because my legs have been really sore.  How do I know if I have shin splints or what?  It is on the inside of the leg by the shin bone and about 2-3 inches below the knee.  It doesn't go all the way down my leg.  I had rested them for about 5 days and they were feeling better.  But I ran 2 miles Monday and they acted up again.  It is worse on my left leg.  I run the mini May 8th.  How long do I need to rest the legs?  Any advice?  Oh and I have been icing them...well not faithfully...I didn't ice at all yesterday.
I'm guessing maybe shin splints.  They seemed to get really sore after I started speedwork on the track.  Thinking maybe I won't do speedwork on the track anymore.

Sounds like shin splints;(

Take Motrin/ Ibuprofen 800 mg every 6 hours for the next two days with food. Rest and ice

If you have  compression stockings it wouldnt hurt to wear them. Ditch the speed work for a while. Let pain be your guide.

Good luck!!!

Hope everyone is having Happy Training!!

Interesting turn of events... My cycling team (team in training) had plans to go to Zion National park for the weekend, hiking & cycling, etc... Then, my friend in St George called me yesterday and said there was a big get-together today so, I came up to St George a day early... Saturday is the St George Ironman... it is sooo cool to be in town 2 days before the big IM... lots of athletes in town - lots of cyclists on the road... I'll be riding tomorrow morning, and I'd be surprised if I'm the only one out there

One bad thing, is that it's REAL windy here today - I hope the wind dies down SOON!

In other news, I got re-fitted on my bike yesterday and I think it'll make a big difference in my riding I also bought a new saddle, all they had was PINK, so I think I'll keep the pink saddle, and wrap the handlebars with pink tape, and rename my bike from Hoke (a black man) to Hokey - or I can have him order the same saddle in black and keep his name the same... decisions, decisions

Marianne, so sorry to hear about your foot... i hope you don't need surgery.. and if you do, the recovery is quick like you said. Still on pace for IM, though, right?

Amy, sucks to hear about your leg. It does sound like shin splints. I agree with what Marianne said, and will mention that as someone who has had a bum shin until recently, I LOVE the Zensah compression sleeves! When the shin gets a bit cranky now, i put one on and voila, HAPPY. I got them on Ebay for cheap, but i'm sure any compression stocking will do the trick. Also, how do you ice it? I LOVE my Active wrap (activewrap.com), gel inserts, fits great around your leg, very comfortable.

Marianne, thank you for support.. and everybody, THANK YOU!

I have slightly turned into a crazy person with nervous changing to excited every hour. OY. I'm taking the advice of many to heart and will just focus on enjoying the race. I will also do what somebody suggested and will dedicate my last 6 miles to people close to me- my Dad (who passed away over 2 years ago, so that one will be hard), my Mom, Nikita, Lukas, hubby and the last one-i don't know, thank you, God, for my life or something like that.... i'm sure i'll be a sobbing mess, but i'm thinking that if that takes focus off of the physical pain-decent strategy then? lol

Leaving for Champaign tomorrow. I KNOW i saw my Bib number somewhere, but can't find it now in the emails..gah! Must be race day brain already. I'll post when i know.

Get this-Saturday is THE ONLY day in like 10 days when it's supposed to rain (40%). The next two days are windy, though, so i'm just praying the wind will blow the front right past us...
