Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys, This summer is way more busy than I thought it would be and clearly I can't really keep up with how busy this group is. I still want to stay involved in a passive, lurking kind of way and hope you don't mind me posting once in a while. I'm really sorry for being a once-in-a-while kind of mentee and wish I was able to be more involved. I will try to post as much as I can, but as you can tell by my absence, I'm failing miserably at that. As for triathlon-related things on my end, I haven't really done much formal training. I try to run at least twice a week and bike about the same, but I haven't been able to keep up with that either. My schedule just changed so I'm adapting my life around it and it's taken longer than anticipated to get in the right groove to become a well-oiled time management machine. I'm not quite there yet, but definitely getting better. And even though I haven't been able to get on the road with my bike nearly as much as I'd like, I've been making it up by going mountain biking. My brother introduced me to it about a month ago and now I can't get enough of it. And by that I mean I've gone twice and am hoping to go again on Sunday. It's addicting! I think I just like anything that has two wheels and allows you to get lots of speed. On an even more positive note, I've now biked to work/school 6 days in a row. I really think that's a record. Happy training, racing, and just generally, triathloning! Kasia |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve, Thanks for remembering my Yoga question. I am leaving on Saturday morning for Cambridge for Eagleman. I still am not feeling but I hope to finish on my feet. I am thinking about whatg to eat on the bike. The weather is to be in the high 80's which is not too bad. I like your idea about fig newtons. They are pretty good and easy yo digest. I had shot blocks last year. They were fine also. I think the idea is to drink a lot of electrolytes, Yes? I ran yesterday and swam today. I might run in the morning about 3 miles and then do nothing ( but the whole packet thing on Saturday). Maybe some day I will have this down and not be wondering what to do up to the last minute. Naw.. that would take some of the excitement out of what happens next. Good luck t all this weekend. Steve, we know you will make us proud. Ellen |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GEORGE - That'll be too bad if you have to scratch the July race, but as you're found out in a hurry, these things can add up in a hurry! You've probably also learned that there's always another race just around the corner. Sort of like mosquitoes -- kill one, and there's still 4,673,918. ![]() ![]() ![]() And having extra training time is never a bad thing. I know how it hurts to miss out on a race, but there are ways to justify doing so -- with being better prepared for the next race being a good rationalization. Well, it works for me, anyhow! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() KASIA - Happy you dropped back in, and never apologize for how often (or not) you are here. I know how life works for people, and I also know how easy it is for people to feel left behind in a group that is so active. I am actually trying to keep the reins on this group just a bit, just to keep less people feeling they have been "dropped". I don't exactly know what I am trying to do to keep things a little slower....so maybe I'm just making up that part! Your training sounds pretty good, with two-a-weeks in the run and the bike, and then the commutes to work, and now the mountain biking. Many a good traithlete has added mtn biking as part of theri regimen, so you have lots of great company. Just try not to fly over the handlebars too often! Stay happy and safe! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ELLEN - Yup! Drink those electolytes! Were it me and I was able to disciipline myself sensibly, I would aim for about 120z of HEED before the race, and then two 24oz bottles on the bike. I would also have a small bottle in transition, and I would have a decent hit on that before heading off on the run. Then on the run I would try to have a sip or two from the energy drink on course at every aid station, and when I say "a sip" that is sometimes all I can handle of that stuff late in a HIM run. But I at least try to get in a dsip, figuring the 2.17g of carbs that make it past my lips and down to my gut will make some minimal difference -- but a difference nevertheless! Another goodie on the bike is small pretzels. And here's a geeky thing to picture: at IMLP '04 I started the bike with about a dozen of those stacked on the straw of my aero bottle; they fit perfectly! The only problem with that plan was that once I started actually riding, water sloshed out of the bottle and mushed up the pretzels still on the straw, and many of them just dissolved away and sloughed off onto the roadside. So sad! At this point, do nothing the day before! You will add nothing to your fitness, and maybe risk an injury -- or just deplete your energy stores some. The trick is to stay off your feet as much as you can, and if it's sunnt sty away from the sun as much as possible. Modest hydration is a good thing, but don't overdo it by going through multiple bottles tomorrow and Saturday -- no need for that, and it can lead to serious problems with balancing electrolytes. I will send mojo for water temps no higher than 77.99 degrees. Enjoy the time with your friend, and treat the race as learning experience -- pacing on the bike, and nutrition overall loom as the biggest goals. And if you walk past the Team Fexy tent and see a small, pretty blond woman wearing a therapeutic boot on one foot, that's Lisa and say hi to her from me! Give my love to the Blackwater, too; it's been seven long years since I was last there. ![]() |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hope that everyone racing this weekend has an awesome race!! I am doing the TriFitness Sprint... I am quite nervous about the swim. It is in the Long Island Sound, my last swim was in a lake. I guess I am just worried about the currents and the swim is a 1/2 mile vs 1/4 mile. I guess I am feeling under prepared! I don't see any time limits on anything but all of the women are in the last wave and I guess I am worried about not finishing the swim before the allowed time! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey gang...been busy training and working so I have just been lurking for a while! But still manage to keep up with everyone's posts. Good luck to all racing this weekend! I've got a Sprint this weekend (Tri-Latta) and I am looking forward to it. Longest race yet so far so we'll see how it goes. Still a little aprehensive about the open water swim. I did 1200 yards in the pool last night without stopping and surprisingly my 400 splits were within seconds of each other (9:02, 9:06, 9:10). It was a nice easy relaxed pace swim...but still managed to average 2:16/100. I just need to translate that "relaxed" mindset over to the swim tomorrow. Unfortunatley no wetsuit tomorrow...water temp is supposed to be in the mid 80's!!!! Can anyone say HOT-TUB! 6:34am wave start time....uggh...will be getting up around 3am....BUT at least I'll be done early before the 90+ degree weather kicks in....by which time I will be recovering with some adult bevvies by the pool! Beautiful thing is they have live timing at this race, so since the wife doesn't want to drag the little one out that early, she can track my progress as I cross each timing mat....actually a pretty cool idea! I'll post the race report once everything is up! Race hard everyone! David |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alex - You have a profile pic, Nice... Good luck to everyone racing this weekend. Tomorrow Im meeting up with the Team In Training Tri's for our first group ride. We re riding at Fairhope which was the place for my last weekend race. I think I will try the run again after our bike ride. I need to seek revenge on it and beat my race time on the run... |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ALEX - I agree with George -- great profile photo! I agree with Johanne -- take it one stroke at a time! I've been skulking around, and I found that the forecast for Sunday morning is seas less than one foot, which means not much chop at all. And that's for "seas", which further leads me to believe that the protected Sound will be less choppy. And what winds there are will be from the SW, which means that they should be st your back on the return leg of the swim (if I'm orienting the map correctly). Did you see mine to you several days ago, in which I mentioned how nice it will be to have the extra buoyancy from the salt water? I think it will be a palpable difference for you compared to last week's lake swim. Ride it, enjoy it! Speaking of riding it, if you sense there is current and it is at your back, then try to ride it, too. I think the sense you are aiming for is a longer stroke with a bit more glide than normal; let the current push you along! I saw nothing on the webiste about a swim cut-off time, and it's possible that TriFitness is one of those races that doesn't have a cut-off. You might want to ask beforehand, but usually when there are cut-off times for the different legs of a triathlon, they are well-advertised. Mine tomorrow does not have any cut-offs, period. If you are unfamiliar with salt water, or flat-out don't like it, then have a water bottle front and center at T1 so you can drink from it and remove the salt taste from your mouth, and maybe even use it to douse yourself if you don't like the clammy-skin feel of having come out of the ocean. I'm not too bothered by either, but for a HIM I did once that had a slatwater swim, I used water for both of the above purposes. Douse-glug! I think there was one more thing I wanted to see, but it escapes me for now. Oops. If it returns.....you'll be the first to know! Oh, yeah -- just remembered. If you haven't tried the Popeye breathing thechnique I manetioned to you and Jeff a few days ago, DON'T try it on Sunday. Just stick with what got you there, and save new tricks for later, at your full leisure. If you're not back here before race day -- HAVE FUN! I will be living this one very vicariously, as I love saltwater swims; so much more interesting than freshwater swims! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ALEX again - I see that you are #350, which goes well with JEFF's #50. I'm hoping that both DAVID and I also get something that's a multiple of 50! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I found this little gem as a possible training route for Branson: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/9324972 The hill at the beginning and the end is the same one. I visualize simply riding laps on that to emulate what Branson offers. I recall riding here several years ago around spring time to prepare for the upcoming season. It is about 100 miles from home and a familiar area-we pass through a few times a year. Perhaps next weekend I'll try it out. This is the Branson bike course http://www.mapmyride.com/s/routes/view/bike-ride-map/missouri/branson/12098730 Edited by Av8rTx 2011-06-10 5:58 PM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DAVID - I can -- "HOT TUB!!" Fear not the swim, as 1200 straight will serve you well at Tri-Latta. Is that a 500 or 750...or mabe even 1000? Whichever, it's less than the 1200 you knocked off with exemplary consistency. Cool beans on that amazing feat! 6:34 is indeed early, but your thinking probably mirrors theirs -- get everybody done with before the temperatures become a serious matter. Remember, too, that's it's night before the night before that matters in terms of sleep -- so let's hope you slept well last night!! I will get to mt race at 6, even though it's a 8:30 start for me. I'm obsessive-compulsive about being one of the first on-site so as to claim the best parking AND rack spots, and that's useful for this race series as none of the racks are assigned. So, to the early bird goes the best spots! Back to the swim, your pace is good and you can make it better if you try to do some drafting, which is swimming close behind someone and getting sucked along in their swimstream. So, if you see a person swim past you, just veer over behind them as they pass you and try to stay "on their feet" as long as you can. Or not. It is only something to try if you are feeling really good about your own swim -- which you should be, given your pace and your consistency. Looking forward to the report! Have a good one, David! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DAVID again - You're #72 for Tri Latta....so that kind of ruins the hopes and dreams I ahd that all four of us would be multiples of 50. Rats! HOWEVER, that opens it up nicely for me, as I can match at least one of you through any number of permutations of multiples. Yippee!! (I won't know until I show up in the morning.) |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the good vibes Steve but I'm afraid that it is all for naught. There will be no wetsuits on Sunday unless you want to forgo the podium ( and lord knows I don't want to do that). The real problem is that yo go off in the last wave. That I can not do. I remember last year when I was finishing the run (slow as I was) there were people just leaving for the run. I would have jumped back in the river. You remembered the nice people with the hoses. That felt good. I remember saying to the woman who handed me a medal and some water that I thought I earned that medal. She agreed. The point being, that if I have to swim in whatever I will go with my wave at 6:50. That is a great time. That way I can still debate the debt ceiling in T1 and be on my way. I like the pretzel idea. I already have the fig newtons packed. It will be a learning experience. So, here is the deal. Before I do this again, I need to be at a certain level of fitness to press the send button on a registration for 2012. We wil confer on this and I will rely on your good judgement. It is always tempting since I have a place to stay on the other side of the race about 3 miles from the start. I could actually go there and ride the course multiple times to train. But do I do that? NOOOOOOO! Johanne, I like the concept of go to one buoy and then another. What could be simpler? I'm going to try that. I read somewhere that one of these Kona champions was asked how he got through the marathon. He said he put one foot in front of the other and pretty soon it was over. I do that during the swim.. I think that it is about 40 minutes and I will be done (if I swim straight). I just keep telling myself that if I keep swimming I will reach the finish. I am going to spend much time sighting on Sunday. I got some goop to smush on my googles so they won't fog up. At Columbia I arrived at the ramp and sat there until I could pull my goggles off so I could see. I was facing the wrong way and the volunteers were about to call the wagon to assist me until I explained that all was well once i had some vision back. So I hope all you racers do well this weekend. And for those of you training for a future event, train well. Really I wish for you to have fun. I intend to do just that. It is just a race. I'll be waiting to hear. Ellen

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ELLEN - Your first paragraph is hilarious. You arre always funny when in a self-depracating mood (although you shouldn't be treating yourself that way....), and then the comment about the last wave was ewqually good. The irony there is that Lisa (Team Fexy person) posted that this year there are reports of both jellyfish and cow rays in the swim zone, but the thinking is that by the time the pros and elites make it through there, the rays will be widely dispersed. So, there are lots of advantages for going in the latest waves possible. Another tip for you, concerning the little jellies, is (a) to coat exposed skin with Vaseline, and (b) if you hit a couple (as evidenced by a wee pinprick sensation) and it bothers you, just swim in amore head-down fashion until you are past that particular congregation of them. Yes, the people with hoses shopuld get their reward in heaven (for those of us who believe in that), or will be rewarded with a noble Sentient Being to spend their next life as (for those of us who believe that), or will go to bed tomorrow that knowing that most of 1600 athletes love them to pieces. I will be very happy to confer with you on next year's plans, and if what I remember about Columbia and Eagleman registration, the former is about Nov. 1 and the latter might be Oct. 1. Soooooo........lots of time for you to contemplate your inevitability! Seeing as how I failed at dropping the water temps to ensure wetsuitage, I will now work on a different angle of the swim -- your goggles. I know you mentioned some "goop to smush" with to keep them crystal clear, but that will work only if the don't leak - which mine did repeatedly at the beginning of my swim today. (I know it was repeatedly, cuz I stopped four times to try to seal the seal.) Therefore, my angle with your swim will be to extend my remaining mojo towards your goggles and that they allow in no tsunamis of water. Just one of those services I provide!! Sleep well tonight, and enjoy your kibbutzing time in transition tomorrow morning -- and THEN go on to enjoy yourself as much as possible on that glorious course!! |

Great race! I am pining for 20mph averages and low 7 minute miles. My local 5k, actually 3.3 miles I did a 25:52 (by my watch). Small event but well attended, no timing chips so I haven't seen the full results. I recall 2nd and 3rd place finishers from my age group passing me but I was feeling bad. Because it was less than a mile from home I didn't have to get up at 5am, but that meant I had my breakfast later than I normally do for an 8am race start and I had coffee, which I had stopped drinking prior to events because it messes with me, I think that and some weird lower back tightness sort of killed my hopes of a better run. Yesterday morning I did a 1200 meter swim and 5 mile run, before 8am. I planned it this way so my longish workout would be 24 hours before this race, but perhaps those miles were still talking to me. But I am in a build phase for Branson with some longer runs and rides. Met some runners and chatted with some people I recognised, I tried to pace myself off a 65 yo man that comes down from OKC to race in the DFW area. He always wins his AG and always beats me. He said he was running in the low 7's per mile so I tried to run with him-blew up at mile one, walked twice-he beat me by two minutes but was icing his ankle after stepping on a rock and twisting it. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=255989 After I recovered and cooled off I did a 70 mile ride and generally felt pretty good. Not very snappy in the legs but experimented with a Gu every 30 minutes and 2 bottles of Gatorade. At 56 miles I bought a Dr Pepper and a gallon of water for my camelbak, temps were high-95ish. The nutrition plan helped with my late ride meltdown and I was able to stretch it to 70 by riding laps around our abandoned hospital. Right now I have the Criterium Dauphne and Tour de Suisse cued up on the DVR ready to relax. Tomorrow AM i is a 1 hour lake swim, short ride then cut the grass. Tomorrow evening a 7 mile run |
