Think I could have done more... but I got too worked up and lost it. Did a couple of 100s and tried to repeat the 350 but just didn't have it in me. I really think this is mostly mental with me... I just have to get more comfortable in the water before I can become an efficient swimmer. Nope.... no flip turns yet, I just turn and go. My breathing is better then before, but still needs work. Yahoo! I remember my first tri in the open ocean, 500 yds, it was the longest swim of my life, I hated it and I was second to last out of the water. The only person behind me was blind and being guided by another swimmer. But I did it It was side-stroke, dog-paddle, float on my back, hyperventilating the whole way Then I whizzed past about 250 cyclists and did an exhausted mediocre run. 279th out of 450. Last year I repeated the same tri and was 140th...This year...who knows? great job on the 350k in the pool |

Regular 87 Santa Barbara, CA | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED Finished my first 10k Race today! First time in my life I have ever run more than 5 miles. My goal was to finish in less than an hour, which I did, 57:30, I am happy with my time. Pacing was interesting, I think I could of gone harder, but not sure. Wanted to make sure I didn't run out of gas. Beautiful run along the shore... Now I need a nap but I am too excited-- pacing the house waiting for Fedex to deliver my Garmin! They are supposed to deliver it today... Pamela |

Member 34 | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED I totally bonked today. Supposed to do a 12 mile run, but that turned into a 7 miler. I knew as soon as I started this wasn't going to go well. I don't know exactly what was going on but I could be generally worn out, dehydrated, or poorly nutrition-ed. I don't know. The first 50 degree days of the year have arrived, so I think I'll get back out there tomorrow with my first bike ride since October. Edited by aggienmmi 2010-03-06 3:58 PM |

Hope you like the Garmin. So far I'm enjoying mine.... great tool. |

Veteran 260 LaGrange, GA | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED Well, I took my bike out this afternoon on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Last week I road with two other guys on some relatively level roads in a state park; just a few minor hills. Today, I adventured out on my own on a road near my home. I had a 12 mile ride planned that included 2 loops on one road. I knew the route had some hills; they didn't look too bad from my truck. What a difference from the view from my bike! I was gasping for air trying to climb those hills. I did hit 30 MPH going downhill but was going 7 MPH uphill. I only road for 6.5 miles and averaged 14.8. I stopped and loaded the bike on the truck. I know it was only my second ride and it will get better. The idea of riding 20-30 miles at 18-22 MPH seems like a very lofty goal right now. Tell me it gets better soon! |

According to my kids, messages in all caps are the equivelant of YELLING Well, I got my new Garmin 310XT and we aren't getting along all that well yet. I went for a bike ride Sunday and forgot to turn if off when I got home so I have 36 mins of me walking around my house after an hour ride Last night I went to a coached track run (that's a whole 'nother story, geez, the guy tried to KILL me ) and I somehow accidentally LOCKED the Garmin when I went t start my run, took three laps to clear and still not sure how I cleared it! Then I got home and went to upload/download? (not sure which is correct Garmin lingo) the data and it said there was new software to download which turned out to be a 30 minute firmware upgrade that somehow WIPED OUT my entire memory back to square 1, have to re-enter everything! Sex, age, blah blah blah. Hmmmmm...does anyone else hear whining? ? ? oh oh. Life is good. Got two legs, got a heartbeat and three dogs that love me, Pamela |

Member 97 New York City | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED I am in the same boat as Chris. My training has stalled because I caught a cold, and now I am insanely busy at work. And I have a half-marathon next weekend. I am going to try to run 10 miles tomorrow and see how that goes. I did 8 1/2 a few weeks ago, and that felt good. John |

Member 38 cincinnati, ohio | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED Awesome on the swim!! That is a big milestone. Congrats! Training has been going well, except the last few days I have had some shin pain and IT band tightness. Think i am going to hold back on running for a few days and just put in some extra time on the bike. No time for an injury!! Also, really thinking i might need a massage! Got outside last weekend for 2 rides and 2 runs - It was beautiful here in Ohio and felt great. This weekend on the other hand is nasty, cold and rainy. back to the trainer - ugh have a great weekend everyone!!!! |

Member 97 New York City | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED I am doing the NYC Half-Marathon. But things are not looking good. I did not get a chance to run this weekend because, in addition to the crazy weather, I worked both days. I am starting to think that it may be better to defer rather than risk getting hurt due to under-training, and having an injury affect my triathlons this summer. |

Yeah if you can defer that might be a good option. No need to get injured before the season really begins. The weather should be nicer this week so hopefully we can all be outside training again. This rain is the worst! |

Member 34 | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED Can I vent for a moment? Please bare with me, I need to get this off my chest. Do any of you have friends or family that like to remind you of the physical dangers of endurance sports? My mother seems to take particular joy in sending me the news articles associated with every single runner or triathlete who drops dead during a race. She was so incessant, I was finally scared into going to get an EKG and Echochardiogram just to prove that I didn't have any hidden heart defects. But despite these tests from not even a month ago, she decided to do it again. This weekend someone died just after finishing a 1/2 marathon in Dallas, where my mother lives - so she felt that it was a good idea to send me the article DESPITE THE FACT THAT I'M RUNNING MY FIRST FULL MARATHON IN 5 DAYS!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH! Vent over. Thank you for your patience. |

Veteran 260 LaGrange, GA | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED Copy the race results of several major races with a list of all the runners that finished. Make sure it is a very long list and email it to her. At the bottom, type a message that looks like a news article that expresses amazement that all these people SURVIVED the race! |

Not a Coach 11473 Media, PA | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED Unfortunately, some news organizations love to highlight those events. The fact is that the incidence of those "dropping dead" in races is not high given all those participating. Many of those who do had some kind of underlying issue that likely would have resulted in their untimely death while they were doing something else (in which case no one outside their family and friends would have noticed). You can try to explain that and be rational with her but, knowing many mothers, that may not work. GOOD LUCK THIS WEEEKND!!!!! |

Member 19 Montana | Subject: RE: JohnnyKay's Group - CLOSED Good morning, I like to say that if I ever want to be talked out of anything all I have to do is ask my mother and I have told her I feel that way. . Anyway it is that type of thinking that keeps people from doing anything. Unfortunately I have found myself zoning out my mother at times, but we have talked about it and she does much better. No matter what you do people die, that is the way life is. People die driving, flying, on vacation, in bed, crossing the street. Anyway good luck with the race, you will do great and I am sure it will no be your last. I would rather die standing up than live on my knees. |

I've been trying to figure out how to attach a picture but I can't get it right now - I'll try again tomorrow. Edited by aggienmmi 2010-03-22 9:18 PM |
