phillybarb - 2008-10-03 1:42 PM Hello everyone! I missed my run this morning, as I woke up really early to wait a couple of hours to go through security and then wait a couple more hours to see Barack Obama speak at a local high school. I stood for over five hours straight and now my back hurts. I'm planning on taking a nap now. Hopefully, I can get some energy and run a few miles tonight. I don't want to do too much tonight, as I am hoping for 13 miles tomorrow morning, but I will try to get some in.

How was Barack?

I was kind of disappointed; he's not the greatest of speakers. He is very intelligent and articulate and the speech was well-written, but he didn't have very much emotion. But then again, I kept comparing him to Bill Clinton, who I saw speak in the fall of 1996. Bill was an awesome speaker. When Barack came on stage, everyone went crazy. The news talks about him being like a celebrity, and I can really believe it now. People just wanted to take his picture and touch him. I had never seen anything like that before.

My view of him is so different because of being from the University of Chicago...Hard to see him as a celebrity when we vote in the same precinct...well at least it used to be...4 years ago I had to fight through 5 tv crews to get to vote.

That would be a bit annoying. This year, I'm sure it will be more that 5 TV crews.

It is annoying, and I am sure it will be ridiculous this year...luckily I have moved so my polling place is not the same anymore...otherwise I think I would have requested an absentee ballot.

Consider yourself lucky. I think I'm stuck at Holy Name Cathedral. At least I'm not in the loop. Several years ago Barack was shaking hands with commuters at the Jefferson Park el stop...it was drama trying to catch my train.

Obama-mania has gotten out of control in Chicago IMO. Then again, it could just be that I'm extremely annoyed as I'm a red state girl at heart.

Can't believe that people treat politicians like celebrities.  They're all crooks.  Hate the whole political "he said, she said" game.  You can find so much dirt (good or bad) on anyone and spin in a way that sounds bad.

Well, enough of my bitterness for now...

I agree with you. All politicians (and all people) do good and bad things.

I don't follow politics much-I need to work on it, but I am always disappointed and frustrated with politicians.  I don't do TV much.  I don't have mine hooked up to cable.  Periodically I just will pop in a vhs, or a dvd on my computer.  I suppose I should check out some of the political related threads and check out some of the debate material.

I just get so frustrated and discouraged that I tend to avoid it.  And since I moved(three years ago) I don't even know were I am suppose to vote.

You guys can keep me accountable.  I will register for an absentee ballot and look into some of the issues that they different candidates are addressing.

I won't hold it against you ...I do agree that it is a bit out of control...I have to drive near his house to pick my husband up from work and the number of police and other folfs hanging around makes it almost dangerous

You might want to register soon if you want to vote in November. Many states close registrations in early October.

I get really frustrated by politicians, too; however, my undergraduate degree is in history and political science and I did an internship with my Congressman (I wanted to practice constitutional law, but I was too poor for law school), so I follow elections/politics very closely. I tend to be a CNN junkie, even though a lot of times I yell at the reporters and the politicians being interviewed, as they just seem really stupid sometimes (well, maybe a lot of time).

Dinner was a pot roast-quite delish

and dessert...homemade strawberry shortcake.  yum

the last time I made strawberry shortcake I baked it in the BBQ.  Believe it or not, it turned out really good-it was a really hot day and I didn't want to make the house any hotter.

I had to check with my mom to verify-it was a different occasion.  The guys were present for the BBQ incident (and quite amused), but they were not there to appreciate my mad BBQ baking skills.

It is quite yummy-but I miss the gross quantities of whip cream that I usually bury it under.

I adjusted the grill(it's gas) until it was consistently near 350 degrees.  The batter was in Teflon coated scone pans.  Very thick-thin cast iron.  I periodically checked them and voila- shortcake by BBQ.

Prior to putting the scones in I scraped of all the remnants of baby back ribs and BBQ sauce off the grill. Dinner had been quite delish as well.
