Matt237 - 2009-01-07 5:48 PM Yesterday I did my first run since I had knee surgery 4 months ago.  It was ugly.  So much strength is gone.  I only ran a half mile but it was nice to get started.  Sesh when you started running after your surgery what was your experience like?

Odd and very tiring.  I don't think I fully got my head straight, as in trusting my knee to hold up, for a long time.  It also felt very weak, well... because it was.  The muscles in that leg just weren't strong anymore.  So, I was weak and really slow.  Now I'm stronger and only pretty slow.  It's improvement

I'm in finance.  It was still raining when I left work, so I gave up on the run and swapped it for tomorrow's trainer ride.  I'll run in the morning, after a (hopefully) good night's sleep.  The rain is supposed to stop by then.

Have a great night everyone!

Good job on improvising and doing something instead of just putting it all off.  In the early going, it's very important to stay as routine as possible, and swapping workouts is more routine than skipping them.

Nice way to finish a crazy day

Thanks for the encouragement.  Yesterday was not a good day.  Today will be better.  (Can't be worse.)  If nothing else, I managed to get a full night's sleep.  My son seems fine.  We were at my daughter's swim meet on Tuesday night, and I'm thinking the warm, moist air by the pool might have just opened up everything in his head and made it all drain.

I did get up and run this morning.  I gave it some thought while I was out there.  Running probably won't be so bad in April, when it's not 33 degrees and really dark in the morning.  So I told myself I need to get out and do these short runs when it's cold and dark, so that by the time the good weather comes I'll be enjoying longer runs.  Got me through the 15 minutes, anyway!

Happy Thursday!

Just thought I would ask you all to keep after me and make sure that I am running (at least).  I am leaving today for a 10 day business trip that will take me to London and Dubai.  I plan on running in both cities (so I can brag that I ran in them) but I will be working the entire time, so it will be hard to keep after it.

I should have internet so I will continue to log and post when I can.

Those should be some interesting runs.  Be sure you map them with the route function so we can see where you went.

I hope trip isn't all work and no play.

And now you're planning three months ahead

Seriously, that is a really good thing to do.  You have a goal of where you'd like to be and you did something this morning to help you get there.  EXCELLENT!

Great job on fitting in a workout last night and getting up this morning.  I can commiserate about the cold weather.  I dragged my sorry butt out of my warm bed this morning at 5:30am for a 5 mile tempo run.  It was cold and dark.  I can't wait for it to be light in the mornings and a little warmer.

Hope your day is better!

You gonna do the Mardis Gras Marathon/Half-Marathon?

Now that is a fun race.

All of my training partners are, but my wife is planning to be on a Mardi Gras Float that day (with or without me).  So I will be babysitting my kids at the parade, or throwing beads from the float.

sesh - 2009-01-07 4:29 PM I've got day 2 of Week 3 to do tonight (started on week 3).  I think I'm gonna enjoy this, although I had some tired arms while swimming today.

This push-up challenge is making my swim a little tougher!!

But I like the results!

I actually did more on the 'max' set last night (which was day two) than I did on my initial test.  Strange, but I like it.

I do have to admit, I'm looking forward to the free Abita at the New Orleans 70.3 after party.

I did pushups yesterday evening and anticipate this evenings swim to be a bit uncomfortable.  But it is going to be in a good way, right?

Sounds like I am about par with you when you started then.  Interesting comment about trusting the knee.  That is exactly how I feel at the moment.  I spend alot of energy making sure the knee does what I want it to.  Thanks again for the feedback.

It really hard to explain isn't it?  Even when I had myself convinced it was ok, I was still subconsciously favoring it.  I still find myself doing it even now, even though it's a bit less.  It's a fine line between trusting it and overdoing something that might hurt it versus pulling back to much.  It really is something you almost have to feel out.  I went by how sore the knee was and what actually hurt.  Was it the muscles around the knee?  That was ok and I could work through it.  Was it pain in the joints?  I'm pulling back, icing, and resting.

The good news is, we aren't professional athletes, and our income isn't dependent on a quick rehab.  We are afforded the opportunity... well, the situation is forced onto us because we have jobs, families, etc. to deal with... to take it slow.  It can get very, very aggrevating at times, but you have to look big picture and say, "Do I want to be aggrevated 3months/6months/a year, or do I want to have to go through everything I just went through all over again?"  For me, not getting back on the operating table was motivation enough to take it slow and smart.

Yep, I am fairly sure that my symptoms were lingering effects of my dentist appointment.  I had my mouth open for quite a while and it didn't make my TMJ happy.

Ouch!  I bet that was definitely not comfortable.

Great job so far this week.  It's really hard to get back into the swing of things after being sick, but it looks like you are taking it head on.

It's weird, after I did day 2's sets yesterday things stopped hurting.  I still feel it in my pecs, but only if I touch them, like a bruise or something.

I was also able to exceed my initial test amount on the max set.  I was wondering if I didn't push myself hard enough when I did the test.

It's weird how quickly your max will increase.  When I half-assedly did the program last time I got to the start of week 4 with a max of about 40.  I saw that by day 3 of that week I was supposed to be able to do 29-33-29-29 and THEN do a max of at least 40 and I was thinking there was no way that would happen.   But somehow it works!

I started back on week 4 this week and I'm definitely feeling it too.

I looked out of curiosity to see what kind of temps you will have in Dubai (expecting 90s / 100s).  It actually doesn't look too bad - high 60s and low 70s.  For some reason I just assumed it was baking hot all year round.

Dubai is supposed to be an amazing city.  Have a good trip (even it is a business one).

Did my Wk1D1 pushups today, not so bad, but still feel pathetic! And my ride today included 45 mins of 25mph head-sidewinds... On a 30+ pound bike with no-aero design whatsoever this was sheer Uggh. In one sense though I was just happy to be riding outside...

In other news - the tri bike search has officially begun. There are some killer deals on frames right now, getting rid of the 08 stock. I need to test drive a couple bikes to see what size frame I need - I ride a 54cm and 56cm now, but the geometry of the tri bikes seems like it may translate to another size - or not... Time to call out to the tri-LBSs. If anyone has any bike recs, send em my way...

Gratz to all on their pushup improvements!

I found I needed a smaller tri bike than roadie.  I guess it's due to the angles, and every tri bike and roadie has different angles, so that makes it all the more difficult.  It'll be so worth it when you find something you like though.

Nice wind ride, too!  I whine when they only get to 15-20 on the Trace.  It only makes you stronger
