I'm in a similar situation, but I only have two kids and they are a lot older now and can fend for themselves a lot more, plus my daughter--the younger at 13--is very into my training. I also teach and have both a flexible and hectic schedule (especially during the school year) so it's easy to train, or not! I have also found it hard to stay motivated lately--but that's another story. You probably already know all this....but...I suggest that you do whatever you can do; be flexible! If you can't get to the pool, do the run or the bike. My motto is, something is better than nothing. Try to stick as best you can with the program, but don't get discouraged if you miss a session here or there. The other helpful thing is to get one or more people to join you. I had a great time getting some friends together--some were training for the team, some for the whole thing--so there is always someone to help you get you to your work out!

Going to Vegas this weekend for a wedding. Hopefully im going to run with a buddy at Red Rock Preserve. And I need to work on my swimming stroke at the pool. Does anyone know if there are trails to run on in Vegas or in Red Rock park?

People run all over the strip, early is better to beat the traffic and heat! Here are some Red Rock routes, hours are 9-6 , check with visitor center for updated info.

I'm still in training mode - ran 7k today and will swim tomorrow between teaching assignments. I haven't been on my bike in about a week, nor have I had time to do any weight training. And school's letting out in 2 weeks! I've got to start planning days at the lake, the track and I don't know what for biking with my two kids in tow!

Exactly, logistics in Vegas are a nightmare, just getting around to eat and do a few things will wear you out, I have family there and visit about 4-5 times a year and seldom even have time to swim.

What 1/2 in August are you doing Mike? Your not crazy, just crazy fast!

I feel like a fart in a trance.  I am doing the Rock N Roll marathon next weekend and I know I just haven't ran enough for it. Urgh.  I wanted to PR too.

What happened, did you get injured ,or maybe you ran out of gas after the half you did? Rock n Roll events are a blast, I hope to do the full in San Diego or Vegas some day.....Did you mean tart in France? Nevermind!!!!!!!

i was very very far off, like 1 hr or so!  it was a pretty big longshot. . and after the reality check that was Boise 70.3 - i don't think it will happen for a while.  yes, lk stevens has clearwater spots, but again, i think i would have to have a perfect race to even have a shot. . i know i can break 5 hrs though that will be my goal for lk stevens.

it depends - i think i did. . 4 tri's last year?  This year i have done:

2 half marathons
1 sprint
1 half ironman

and i wil probably be doing:

Chelanman sprint or OLY (july 18)
Midsummer sprint or Oly (Aug 2)
lake stevens 70.3 (Aug 16)
palouse sprint (sept 5)
kirkland sprint (sept 20)

i haven't figured out after that. . but possibly a marathon in late november or december or something. . i want to find something flat and fast and shoot for a good time.

Thats a hell of a schedule. A lot of races at/over 1hr and a couple at/over 5 hrs. How many years have you been racing?

Kind of had a breakthrough in swimming yesterday. Im starting to feel really comfortable in the water. All of my training is in a lake and yesterday I swam across to the other shore and back (about 1/2 mile total) with only a couple moments having to stop and paddle. The only thing is, i've been swimming two strokes and breathing - is this okay or is it inefficient?

I breathe every two strokes.  I've tried learning to breathe out of both sides, but I get much more tired and swallow a lot of water.  I'm more efficient breathing on my right, so I've just accepted every two strokes as what works for me.

When I swim open water I breathe every 3rd stroke and every other stroke I look ahead to make sure I'm going straight.  Even if I'm drafting someone. I was told at my last 2.4 OWS that apparently I swim straight.  LOL.  God knows HOW!

Breathing every two strokes is most common, what is inefficient is when you lift your head to breath, push down with the extended arm, or letting your hips sink. Breathing bilateral may not be easy or necessary right now, but it helps balance your stroke. Your extension, pull and recovery all become more even from side to side. I do it and it feels akward, but when I see myself on video it makes a huge difference! I will do it during a warmup, and definately use a pull bouy.

The drill i've been working on is where one arm is held extended and one arm is held to the side while breathing. Im getting closer to balancing myself without moving my extended arm, but almost always my extended arm ends up dropping to my side for some balance. Any tips to help with balance? So far, I've been working on head position while breathing and that  has  helped quite a bit.

i breath every 3rd stroke when in the pool - except when i am going really hard
i breath every other stroke when i am in open water, mostly to one side, although i can do the other side if need be (sun is in my eyes, waves, etc), and i look forward every 4-10 strokes, depending on where the course is/how long it is etc.

i have been doing this tri stuff for exactly two years. . i can check back, but pretty much to the day.  i started training mid june, 2007, and did my first sprint at the end of july 07.  i really haven't done that many races, but where my base is at now - from the half iron training, a sprint will pretty much be a short workout (in comparison to my other workouts), and an OLY is shorter then my weekend workouts ever are (exluding taper).  i think an OLY will leave me sore for a day or so, but a sprint shouldn't.

once you have been consistently training for a while (years), your body learns to recover much much quicker, which is nice!

I luuuurve using my fins! What a great workout! I just love to swim in general however

You know my 1st tri season I did 8 triathlons.  EIGHT!  I've actually lost count now.  Into Season 3 here. It's just so addicting.

that is a lot of races!  i haven't done too many the last two seasons because of location, money and it is cool to have some time between races, because then you get big PR's each race

I was just so addicted. Terrible.  Not nearly as many now. I'm lucky to get some discounts and a couple of free slots this year    I found a 10K this weekend for only $15. But they can get expensive!
