Haven't had any time for a proper photo shoot but here's a shot of me on the trainer last week. It's a Quintana Roo Seduza and I love it already. My two hour trainer ride on Saturday was a breeze. I was wearing my helmet in an attempt to figure out how high I'm going to have to hold my head up to be able to see considering my new position. Turns out, I can't figure that out until I'm outside scanning for potholes and distracted drivers anyways. So I left it on in a 'neck strengthening' exercise. Have to plan/practice for everything right!? haha I still need to get some bottle cages that aren't stretched out and a small saddle bag as my old one doesn't fit. Who knew getting a new bike also meant all new 'stuff'! |

I am thinking about buying the current deal on the Xterra full. I am on a budget and am watching my expenses carefully but I want to have the right stuff for IMWI. Should I get the full or swim in the sleeveless? I am currently a 2:00/100 swimmer if that means anything. Thought I would run this again. I think it may have gotten lost talking about riding. Thanks. Realize I'm a few days late here, but I'm also about a 2/100 swimmer, did MOO last year in 1:27. I started out with a sleeveless and upgraded to a full for Ironman training and the race last year for the extra buoyancy and the minimized chafing. If you haven't done a really long (I mean 1.5 hours or more) swim in the sleeveless, do it because I did and chafed terribly and have zero issues with the full sleeve. I had a broken shoulder in 08 and was very worried about motion restriction so I went with the Blue Seventy Helix and LOVE it. It's spendy, but if you treat your suit well it will last you a very long time. I wore it at MOO last year and the water was pretty warm but I was still ok. |

Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Guys I know not everyone lives in Madison, but those doing IM WI will surely use this road to get to the loop at least a few times. Please read and take some action. The town of Middleton is once again contemplating putting in a bike lane on Old Sauk Road. If you are at all interested in your safety and ride this road to hit the loop, please email [email protected] and tell him why you support this effort. They are reviewing this proposal this month. We had a similar letter writing campaign last year, but got no action. As someone who lives on this road, it is only a matter of time before a cyclist gets killed due to the crappy condition of the road and the increasing traffic (both bike and car) on it. Please help! I am on a budget and am watching my expenses carefully but I want to have the right stuff for IMWI. Should I get the full or swim in the sleeveless? I am currently a 2:00/100 swimmer if that means anything. Do you have a place you can rent a full sleeved suit from to try out? You will get a little more speed out of having sleeves, but some people don't like the feeling of the full sleeves. They feel it cuts the range of motion down some. I have both full sleeves and sleeveless. I personally like the full sleeves as it does give me a little bit more speed and helps with buoyancy a little bit more when you get tired towards the end of the IM swim. Your best bet is to try one out if you can. I know that Fleet Feet in Chicago will rent them, and once a week during the summer they let you try some demo's out in Lake Michigan during one of their sponsored swims. Matt, I don't really have a place to rent one. I like the idea of a little more speed and bouyancy, especially since this will be twice my longest swim in an event! What kind do you have? I am looking at the sale on the Xterra's. Do you feel like it impedes your stroke compared to your sleeveless? Greg, My full sleeved one is a Zoot Synergy and my sleeveless one is a Blue Seventy. I don't have any issues with the Zoot wetsuit, I really like it. My stroke feels the same in that as my sleeveless. I'm fairly broad in the shoulders as well and don't feel constricted at all. I haven't swam in an Xterra before, but have heard good things about them. My buddy has one and likes it a lot. As was mentioned earlier people rave about the DeSoto wetsuits. I know the Emilio posts once in a while on here and will answer your questions if you call them. DeSoto has excellent customer service or so I've been told. |

I have never done more than an Olympic in a sleeveless before (I did do IMKY sans wetsuit in 2008). To LazyMarathoner's point, I had some minor chaffing after that around my arm pits when using a sleeveless in an Olympic. If you can afford one with sleeves I would get it. I was swimming around 2:00/100 last year and I did IMCDA in 1:18 with full sleeves. For reference my IMKY time the year before with no wetsuit was 1:28. I was 10 minutes faster in IMCDA (wetsuit and being in better shape helped). Edited by mattb1 2010-03-30 8:53 AM |

For those of you that have used both, how much hotter is the full version? Is that something I need to worry about in WI? I don't think it is that much hotter. I used mine last summer when it was 97 degrees out for an olympic and didn't have any issues. I waited until the last minute to zip it up and was fine. I think the benefits far out weigh the negatives. If we have a year like 2006 (maybe it was 2007, I'm getting old and can't remember) you'll want a full sleeve and will probably use it on the bike and run as well. That year it didn't get above 50 - 55 degrees was windy and raining the entire race, people we dropping out due to the cold. Edited by mattb1 2010-03-31 8:38 PM |

For those of you that have used both, how much hotter is the full version? Is that something I need to worry about in WI? I can offer no comparisons as I have only ever used a full sleeve (which I love) but when I was doing this same research I remember reading something from Steve Fleck of Nineteen Wetsuits on Slowtwitch. I can't find the exact threads now but here are two other quotes from him that I dug up (from two different threads although the same message in both) - Under almost all circumstances you should choose the full suit. That assumes that the full suit fits you very well. I go to many races and I see many people in ill fitting full suits, so I know that I am assuming a lot here. Take the time to find the right brand for you, find the right size and then make sure the wetsuit is fitted properly to you prior to use. If you get all three of these right, swiming in a full suit should feel like swimming on no wetsuit, just faster! There are a few extraordinary exceptions when a sleeveless suit is the better option - but they are rare. Get a full sleeve suit. It will be warmer and slightly faster. You may also have less neck rash issues. Make sure that you are in the right brand for you, the right size and the suit is fitted properly to you when trying it on and before swimming. Sounded good to me at the time so I went with it and got the full (and he sells sleeveless so he must feel pretty strongly about the advantages of a full sleeve if he suggests one in most all conditions). I was not so good at the rest of his recommendation as I went and ordered one off the internet without having ever worn a wetsuit in my life. Worked out well though as the thing fits like a dream! |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread There was a thread this week in Tri Talk about how the Gatorade practice swims are disappearing from race week schedules. Speculation is that this is due to some pending lawsuits surrounding the swim at past events. I noticed there are no practice swims on the IMWI schedule online anymore... anyone know/hear anything about that? |

Veteran 416 | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread And what's worse about no practice swims is it was mentioned about people who swim in the area before the race (at a different location) on their own would be DQ'd. If they don't want to sponsor a practice swim that's ok, but at least let people arrange their own. I would think though that with such a big event a practice swim should be included. |

My plan has 6 bricks in 6 months, all of them in the final 13 weeks. My swim and bike day on Saturday is not meant to be a brick but two training sessions. Right now I swim at the YMCA, then go home and ride later during the day. If I come up there, I will treat the day as a swim/bike brick with a rest between. Not as fast as what I will do during the IM, but much faster than what I do here. Sounds like it could be a great opportunity to experience a taste of what will happen on 9/12! Without the aid stations of course! |
