Subject: RE: Newbz'z summer mentor group is FULL!!!!

I can't tell you all.....as a TOTAL newb (my training log started the last week of March) how inspiring and insightful this information is.  I just have to weed through and pick up on the things that pertain to ME.  Where you guys are....and where I am....are worlds apart.

Baseline - I'm training for my very first race of ANY kind.....a short sprint....on 6/20.  IF I can get my swimming in line, I'll do a "practice" sprint on 6/5.

I did my first 30mi (little over 31mi.) bike ride, this AM.  I did great, until about mi. 27.....then I got pretty tired.  I did up my avg. speed over the last 4mi., though....and ended up at 16mph/avg..  With some of the hills I rode today, I'll take it.  I've already ridden the race course, and it's nowhere near as hilly as my training rides.  My goal is to avg. close to 18mph on race day.  There was only one person in my age group that avg'd 20mph, last year.  I think 18 is a good, achievable target (I've owne my roadie for 8days, now).   I'm gaining confidence on it, with every ride.

I saw my swim coach for the 2nd time, Friday.  When I saw her the 1st time (last Mon), I could do two 50's.  That was it.  Friday, I did 12x50's (with some rest, between).  I'm gonna up that to 16X50's, this week.....then go to 20X50's.....then start seeing if I can do 75's or 100's.  Then, I'll shoot for shorter rests......and go from there.  I started with the intention of wanting to be able to do 2X my race distance, by event day (sprint is a 300M pool swim).  Now...I've upped that.  I want to be able to swim 1,000M by event day.  I think I can do it.  I'm gaining confidence with every time in.

I "think" my log is public, now.  I got in a little over 9hrs, this week.  I don't plan to do anything less....but I know (with my exp. level) I probably need to mix in more rest days.  If you can view it, tell me what you think.  When my swimming gets better, I'll mix in more runs/bike rides.

Thanks, again. for sharing your knowledge......all.

jeff

Just found a pool I can swim at, that works with my schedule! Laughing
I plan on swimming 3 times per week to start and then we will see from there.
only 15 minutes from where I live!

David
I should start building volume now correct?
Working on form and technique and getting distance in??
You just spoke about mixing in faster intervals, I should wait on that?
Thanks in advance.

Doc I would trade times with you! Wink
Congrats on the personal best those are always great.
I am still over the hour and change mark, but it is coming along....
The hard part is I remember what I used to be able to do in my younger days, and now I am far from that. I just need to remember patience!

what does your current/past swimming experience look like?

if you know how to swim well'ish i'd start slowly adding in faster stuff now, if not, get that under control, then start upping volume/speed together.

let me know and i'll give you a bit more specific info.

raced 4 sprints 20 some years ago.
I am very comfortable in the water but have not swam any distance in seriously 20 years...

i'd say then get in the pool however many times a week you can, one swim work up the overall distance and in the other two (or however many) start adding intervals.

Newbz....

I'm working in Orlando, next week (live in NC).  I found a 50M outdoor pool, there, that'll let me swim for free (as a Y member).  I'm gonna swim every day I'm there.  I'm taking the bike, too.....and I'll mix in a couple-3 runs, also (all runs, right now, are just getting my legs under me).

Speaking of running/riding......is there ANY reason NOT to go pretty much all-out on my training rides?  It would "seem" that the risk of injury is minimal.

Thanks.

get in a solid warm up before riding harder, and mix it up, sometimes short hard, rest, repeat (say 10x1 min hard, 1 min easy), other times a bit more steady hard, like 3-5 miles hard.

as long as you are feeling no pain, and its not cuttign into how long you can ride, no, you should be ok right now.

two ways, first, for me at least, as my mileage went up, i HAD to slow down in order to be ok to run the next day.

second, leave the watch at home (i dont own one for this vary reason).

just go run, see how it feels.

janeclemo -  I just feel so out of control while aero.  Does anyone have any advice for getting used to riding aero?

great job easing into aero position.  work on stability with a decent speed, but not to where you are out of control. the more you ride aero, the more comfortable.

also, working your core will help you stabilize overall on the bike, but aero especially. (not sure if you do this already, but it has helped me over time).

keep on riding! again, great job!

agreed, ride it, more and more. start simple, a few min at a tiem, and gradually increase with time.
it comes with practice, just like most of this, but does take a bit of time. the more you do it, the more comfortable you'll be.

What's up all?  I just got back from a 60 miles ride and I had a little "problem".  As soon as I came inside to put my running shoes on my stomach went completely haywire on me and I could not leave the house.  It was all cramped up, like my intestines hated my guts.  Anyone have this happen to them?  It's annoying because this was my only long ride of the week and I wanted to feel how the run would go...

I've never had that experience, but I've also never ridden 60 miles.   New sports drink or energy gel that you haven't used before?

Okay, so I got some Newton stability trainers today, they were one of three or four options that would supposedly work for me.  I have three weeks to try them in dry conditions.  I figure if they don't feel awesome, I didn't waste the money.  I was also told that I have very weak hip flexors which could be why my left knee is hurting a bit...any suggestions as to strength exercises?

Check out this link.  You can do the first one without a weight and the second one looks easy to do at home.  I've also been told that my hip flexors are weak and have been doing a variant of the first exercise.  Will be trying out the second one too.

Dan,

No...nothing new.  I've been using infinit's ironman mix for a while now.  Maybe it was the turkey club I had for lunch.  I don't know.  I'm still all messed up from it.

I didn't get the link for the exercises!  If you can repost them that would be awesome!

BoobieDr - 2010-04-10 6:59 AM Good morning everyone!

Just got home from a 10k race.  new PR for me!!  54:51 (8:51 pace)....my previous PR was two years ago at 59:59 (i was SO glad at that point i beat an hour!!)  anyway...i wanted to get a bit of advice...here is my lap data from the race:

Lap Data
LapTimeDistancePace/SpeedAHRMHR
108m 22s 1.00 miles08m 22s /mile
208m 35s 1.00 miles08m 35s /mile
308m 34s 1.00 miles08m 34s /mile
408m 44s 1.00 miles08m 44s /mile
509m 08s 1.00 miles09m 08s /mile
609m 21s 1.00 miles09m 21s /mile
702m 00s 0.23 miles08m 38s /mile

I'm not a great runner (obviously), but i don't like that 9:21 mile there at mile 6!  and no, it wasn't because of a hill or anything. does it seem like i am starting too fast?  If this was your lap data, how would you analyze it?   How would you stratagize your next run, as far as pacing, to bring the total time down?  Thanks for any advice, i've never been a great runner, and never had any sort of coaching, so any advice is more than welcome!

Congrats...

As David said...it could be that you started too fast for your fitness...or you just don't have experience pushing through the pain.  I honestly think it's more difficult to run a perfect 5 or 10k than it is to run a perfect half or full marathon.  Of course it's harder to train for longer distances...but executing the race is much easier.  That's why I don't do 5 or 10k races...LOL...

Biking- I suck. I'm just gonna try and survive. My tri course is super hilly, so I've been pratcicing hills. I found a beginners group I can ride with next week that does 20 miles ave speed 12 mph which sounds about right for me. Let me know if you have any advice other than just riding a lot.

This is just my 2 cents...so don't take this as "the truth"...

For me, biking was the area that I saw the biggest improvements in the shortest amount of time.  But part of this is because I started riding with guys that were much faster than me.  In group rides, if you're a weaker rider, you can just hang back and draft the entire ride (drafting conserves about 20-25% of your energy)...which is what I did the first few weeks.  I was sucking wind just to stay in the draft...but it was the motivation I needed to ride "beyond my comfort level".  Slowly as I progressed, I took a few turns up front pulling (meaning you're the guy up front eating all the headwinds while everyone else drafts you).  As I progressed more...I started pulling more...and then I started riding with the faster parts of the group.  Each step I made was very challenging, but it was a good way to keep "raising the bar".

I only say this because I think you may be selling yourself short.  You think that "you suck" on the bike...but we all start out slow...and that doesn't mean you have to stay with the slow riders.  If you don't feel like you are getting a hard workout with a 12mph group...then I suggest you find another one that is another level ahead.

Biking is very different from running...you shouldn't run with people that run faster than your fitness level...because there are no drafting effects...and running faster than your fitness level can cause injury.  With biking, you can draft and easily ride with someone that is a much stronger biker than you...and if you do burn out...there it is very unlikely you will develop an injury...except to maybe your ego.

Again...just my 2 cents...

Thanks for this, the explanation of drafting and whatnot is helpful. I met a couple at a running race earlier this year and they offered for me to come down and ride with them, I got my first "big girl" road bike a couple of weeks ago but haven't called them because I know they do a lot of tris and dus and I didn't think I would be able to keep up with them, perhaps I will give them a call. First Triathlon ever, is next weekend, a week and counting - holy crap.

Thanks to all of you for posting your questions and answers it has been great, as I have had many of the same questions that many of have had.

Congrats on the PR Doc, very nice!

Thanks, very encouraging that I can get better quickly. The cycling group in my area has lots of rides of varying abilities. I think I'll do the beginner group next week and see how I feel. If I feel like I'm not being challenged, then I'll try another group. I think I'm just scared that I'm gonna not be able to keep up & get dropped.

I think I'm a little frustrated because I've done spinning classes for years & thought I would have no problems on a road bike. I didn't expect to have such a challenge just going up a hill. I know a lot of it has to do with the fact that I haven't riden a bike in like 15 years and I just need to get comfortable on it.

I've also started riding 2xs a week with a friend I used to work with who is a much better rider than me. My ave mph is higher when I'm out with him. So hopefully this will push me too.

Glad I posted on here as I'm gonna change what I'm doing. I'm definately gonna start pushing myself more on the biking and the swimming. Looks like where I need to do longer distances at a more relaxed pace is the running, not the swimming.

Is it bad if I feel pain in my legs when I'm really pushing it as long as I give my legs adequate recovery if I'm doing hard intervals?  I don't mean pain like I'm about to rip a quad, just my legs screaming from an intense effort.
