I think what I'm most intimidated about is doing a triathlon with a large group of people - getting kicked and punched in the swim (hopefully can keep my goggles on), possible collisions with others while on bike....

If I'm repeating myself, forgive me, but I'm still in a bit of a daze this morning.  The mass start in a triathlon is very intimitating.  Here's a couple of pointers to help you though.  If you are a slower swimmer, stick to the rear and outside of the group.  You are not going to be giving up much time at all by letting the chaos take off in front of you.  Not to mention, you will be much more comfortable without all those bodies flailing next to you.  Second, swim wide of the buoys.  In my experience, this is where the most contact occurs.  People will funnel together to make the tight turn.  Third, if you get into trouble, roll onto your back, float, relax, and regain composure.  Finally, are you aware, that you can stop swimming, take aid from a lifeguard's floatation (as long as you don't make forward progress), and continue the race without penality?  This is actually out of the USAT rule book!

I just need to remember to run my own race - and not try to compete with everyone around me. This will be difficult, as I'm pretty competitive.

Excellent race plan.  Now, let's see if you have the tenacity to stick to it!Laughing

Just finished signing up for formal membership to BT and USAT.  Followed that up with registration to a mini-triathlon on 2 May (150 yards swimming, 5 mile bike, 1 mile run).  Guess there's no turning back now!!!

Congratulations!  Nothing like putting money on the line to solidify the deal!  You're all in now.

I met a friend of mine at the park and we ran 7 miles on the hike and bike trails in the park. Beautiful morning.  We did 3:2 run/walk ratio and for the last mile we ran it stright through at 8:30 pace to keep from getting chicked LOL!!

Most important piece of equipment for me if i have to pick one is my fuel belt and water bottle. As long as I got dressed and put on my Nike's I can handel the rest with food and water.

I have a friend I bought my road bike off of that does a bunch of sprint Tri's and told me about 2 or 3 small ones in the next few months with 300 to 500 m pool swims so Looks like June Ill ge my first Tri in.  Have a great Sunday all.  Oh and Richard, Glad your back buddy.

This one doesn't enthuse me much.  I "try" to eat well.  I exercise to eat & have  relatively clear conscience.

 I don't keep a nutrition log.

I do a relatively mundane and predictable  week though.  I will chronicle it here, as it does not vary much.

Breakfast:
During workweek- 2 mugs black coffee, bagel or english muffin, toasted with butter & 1 low fat yogurt
Sat/Sun - Coffee, Oatmeal with 1 yogurt, prior to my bike or run, which are usually within an hour after.

Lunch:
Workweek - Usually, sandwich (wholewheat) with low fat turkey, lowfat swiss & low fat mayo.  2 lowfat yogurts, 1 Clif Bar & 1 bottle water.  Occasional leftover from night prior.  Sometimes medium coffee.
Weekend - Usually leftover from night prior.

Clif bar prior to afternoon exercise session.  Bottle water, at some point.

Dinner:
Weekdays:  Whatever my wife makes.  I make no fuss here.  This is what I exercise for. All that being said, my wife is weight and health food conscious.  We will have fish with rice once a week.  chicken another, maybe pasta another, etc.
Weekend:  I eat well.  Usually steak on Friday or saturday.  Lamb or salmon or something else good ob the other.  Will often have wine with this.

Speaking of wine...If I am not working late, we usually have wine with supper.  Most nights, the remainder of the bottle will disappearInnocent

Don't have dessert much.

That is sorta how I do it.  Not ideal, but there it is.

As far as the thread goes, things are going very well.  As Tim said before, I have been in Florida, with family for a bit of R&R.  We organized doing this the night prior to me leaving & then I left him with the workInnocent.  Anyway, thanks, Tim.

As mentioned before, these threads work better with participation.  everyone seems to be involved & that is great.  check-in every day or two, if you can.  You may not have much to say, but just a recap of your training that day, is useful.  Lets the group know how things are going.

Remember no questions are stupid.   I will ask my fair share before this is over.  That is the poinbt of these groups.  Some information.  Some encouragement. Some comraderie.  Some just messing about!

Finally, remember, Tim & I are not coaches.  We have no formal training & certification.  We do like this endeavor & have plenty of practical experience.

Richard

Anyway, I am getting my new Tri-Bike this week!!!

Might be a good week to have "bike week".   Will try & concentrate on bike questions, etc.

So. I'll get started...

Your Bike...

Do you have one yet?  More than 1?  What brand, type, etc.  I note many of you have posted lots of bike porn already.

Does everyone clipless peddles?  Anyone not taken the plunge yet?

Do you "measure" bike output?  Either with bike computer, GPS, etc?

Enquiring minds want to know?!?!?

hmm, not sure I want to do this!  I tend to live in a bit of denial when it comes to food...  But I'm not currently trying to lose weight, so it's OK right?  Sealed  So far today I've had 2 eggs, 2 pieces of toast, an apple, 8 mini reese's peanut butter cups (the small ones, I just counted the wrappers in my pocket), a bottle of HEED while running and a glass of chocolate milk after running.  Gonna go eat lunch now, probalby a grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough (and a few more reese's).

Home from Disneyland and kicking it by the pool enjoying my rest and rcovery day.

QOTD:  Bike?

AOTD:

Tri-Bike =    Mercier Aero Time Trial w/ SPDs (changing to Speedplays)
MTN Bike = Specialized FSR Enduro w/ CBros Candy & Mallets (pending on ride)
Measurement = Use both GARMIN 305 and Cyclo Computer w/ cadance
I'll try and take bike pics tomorrow.

Regarding nutrition... I'm having enough trouble just with the training logs so I'll pass on this one but here is my normal diet:
     - B'fst = Oatmeal w/fresh fruit & protein shake & AM supplements
     - AM Snack = Protein Bar
     - Pre-workout = FRS
     - Post-workout = Endurox & bannana
     - Lunch = Depends on what I feel like but always low cal /high protein
     - PM snack = Protein Bar & PM supplements
     - Dinner = Whatever Wifey wants (but it's positive nutritional value as she's a gym rat)
     - Late snack = Yogurt & Granola bar w/ 3 Tangerines or a Apple/Pear

I eat a pretty standard menu during the week.  Today I have had

7:00- 1/2cup of oatmeal & water
8:00- 7 mile run 1 Acell Gel pack.
9:30- Post run recovery nutrition.  1 20 oz gatorade. 1 EAS Protein shake, 1 mini cliff bar.
10:00- 1/2 cup of oatmeal with Blueberrys and a pack of splenda in it. 4oz of nonfat cottage cheese mixed with 4oz fat free Fiber one strawberry yogurt.  Creatine

1:30 - Boca burger patty on whole wheat fiber bread w/ mustard.  Large apple with Plain no fat yogurt and a scoop of Whey protein mixed in.

5:00 - 2 packs 5oz total of tuna mixed with dill pickle rellish, 1 table spoon of light mayo and one boiled egg white on 2 slices of whole wheat fiber bread.  1/2 bag of frozen steam in bag brussel sprouts.

about 8:30 or 9:00  Ill have a small Protein shake that I make with skim milk & a scoop of Whey protein powder.

During the week I typicaly have this.

6:00 - 1/2 cup of oatmeal mixed with bluberries and a pack of splenda,  Protein shake

9:00 - large apple 4oz cup of fat free cottage cheese.

11:00 - bowl of Turkey chili with pinto beans.

2:30 - Banana & protein shake.

6:00 - workout shake I make with a scoop of whey protein powder mixed with 20 oz of gatorade and creatine. I drink this in the gym.  If it is a cardio day (run or bike) I don't add Whey protein just water.

7:30 - dinner varies but includes a lean protein and some complex carbs and vegies.   Example might be pinto beans mixed with cup of whole grain brown rice and a side of brocli.

I'll log every meal next week but this is a pretty accurate example of how I eat.

Re: Bike...

Why the change from SPD to Speedplay?
Do you wear the 305 while biking or mount it on bike?   If mount it, Garmin mount vs. homemade?

Hey Richard,

When stressed (and exhausted) coming out of T1 I have a tough time with a 'flip & clip' and dont have the time (right now) to invest in learning the 'shoe-in rubber band method'.  I have tried SPEEDPLAY's double entry which will give me a bit of an edge (if not peace of mind) to clip in at the mount and I really like the adjustable float.

I use my 305 more for measuring distance, speed parameters and elevation.  I have a Garmin mount on the TT bike and use the wrist mount on the MTN bike.  I used to use a mount on the MTN bike too until I wrecked on a rock garden and wtached it get launched down the trail in front of me.  I am interested in using the HR monitor more apprpriatleyand learning more about using 'Zones' as a training augmentor.

I have two bikes I'm training on, my "road" bike is a 20 year old hardtail mountain bike (pic posted a few pages ago) that has slicks, a rack, panniers, and weighs north of 35 pounds...  My mountain bike is a 2000 Stumpjumper Pro full suspension with a Psylo Race fork, MRP rear link and a 'PUSHed' shock.  Basically a Horst Link 3.5" travel XC bike that weighs 27 pounds ready to ride.  Not particuarly modern, but still holds it's own.

Both bikes have Crank Brothers eggbeater style pedals (I've been clipless since about '93).

I use a Garmin 305 when running and biking.  No mount kit or anything, I just wear it on my wrist and record time, distance and heart rate.  Both bikes have a basic bike computer, but I just use the GPS.  No cadence sensors, but I have a pretty good feel for what 90rpm feels like, and I try to keep around there.

I'd like a new bike, but am pretty undecided on which way I'd like to go.  Either a straight road bike, a tri bike, or a lightweight hardtail mtb.  Doesn't really matter anyway, cause I have no money avaliable... Sealed

I have 2 bikes and one on the way.

For my MTB riding I have a 2007 Trek Fuel 70 full suspension that I majorly upgraded.  I went with XTR brakes, avid TI levers, Manitou R7 fork with MILO(remote lockout), Easton carbon monkeylite bars, Easton EA90 stem, Easton carbon seat post, Nokom cables, SRAM X0 rear deraileur, XT front, SRAM X0 grip shifters, Shimano SLX Hollowtech II crankset, and selle Italia Signo seat.  I saved a lot of money buying the bike used on ebay and a friend getting me parts for the upgrades at dealer cost.  Weighs in at 27 lbs.  I use crank brothers egg beaters style this year.  Last year I used candy style and spd's for a while too.

For the road I have a 2008 Fuji Bordeux Pro Series.  It's an aluminum frame with carbon fork and seat stays.  It has campagnolo Veloce components.  I use spd sl pedals on this bike

For my tri-bike I'll soon have a Cervelo P4 with SRAM Red components. I'll be using spd sl's on this to stay consistant with my road bike

I use a Garmin 705 for GPS and to measure speed, distance, time, cadence, etc.  I did computrainer this winter and got to train with power in watts.  I really thought it was an effective way to train and will probably be adding some sort of power meter on my bikes in the future.
