chichitao - 2010-04-19 8:05 AM New topic this week...

I want everyone to decide on a goal to achieve by the end of the week.  Whether it be a weight goal, get in X number of workouts goal, eating goal, etc.

I've got two goals but they are related.  First, I WILL do all my scheduled workouts this week and second, I WILL run my 10k race this Sat at an 8:30 pace or better (my fastest 10k ever was an 8:46 pace last year).

Post your goal(s) and let's get 'er done!!

My goal is to hit 20 miles for the week.  I consider my week Sunday-Saturday so I already have 3.5 done.  I am also watching what I eat and trying to eat healthier.  I am not setting a weight loss goal because I have really struggled with this since having my two boys back to back.  I am not making excuses for not losing weight but I really think something is going on that is out of my control.  I WILL call the doctors this week and set up an appointment!

My goals for this week are pretty easy....

1.  Get 5 workouts in this week....1 down today!

2.  Lose 1 lb...weigh in day is Wednesday.

3.  Get a new seat for the bike.....my bottom is still sore!

Wow, it's been a slow few days!  Congrats to Shauna and Courtney for the race and the test!  Way to go!

I was just wondering if anybody knew how much walking can count as a "workout."  I'm not saying I'm going to use it as a replacement, but many days I walk about 4 miles at a relatively fast pace (walking the dog and walking to and from school).  There are some days I walk a lot more than that, too, considering we live downtown so it's sometimes useless to use the car.  During the summer, we'll probably walk like 6 miles/day.  So I'm just curious if that helps training or if it's just kind of an extra little calorie burn?

Do you guys walk a lot every day, too?

Thanks!  Have a good day everyone!

Yep, I have been swamped at work.  I had to take off this coming Friday so I am trying to pack a lot into this week.  I am also out of the office at clients a lot this week.  I hate weeks like this!!

About the walking...any activity is activity!!  I think I would look at it as a little extra calories burned.  I am working on increasing my endurance so walking a few miles a day broken up over the day would not really help me all that much.

Hey Tim...how is the training program working out for you?  Are you still doing the shorter workouts but still seeing improvements?

I am actually enjoying it quite a bit now and it works really well with my personal life.  The dog bite threw me off there and got me all out of whack but I am back on it.  The workouts are getting longer as well.  This is my "recovery" week and my runs and swims are at 17min.  I finally figured out how to get the most out of these shorter workouts (lot more intensity!).  They are hard workouts, but I am seeing a lot of good improvements and am faster in each event than I have ever been.

I am curious to see how all this speed work will effect my 6mi run on Sat, since it has been a long time since I've done that distance.  I can currently do 3-4mi in the 7:50-8:10 pace range, so I think by slowing it down to an 8:20-8:30 I should be ok.

Walking never hurts and you can even add it to your workout log if you choose.  It is down in the sports category.

I wouldn't consider it as training, unless you just can't get anything else in that day.  Since you are already doing it, I would just use it as extra burn.

Good morning everyone!!! How is everyone doing today???

I am great so far today. BUSY BUSY BUSY but great. I am on my taper so I just have a shorter swim scheduled for today, but I might not be able to get to the pool before lap swimming ends. Should I switch swimming to another day and run today??? or should I just run today and tomorrow and skip the last training swim???

I am a little nervous for this next race.  I feel like I am not as ready as I was for my last one... I am not sure why. If anything, I am MORE prepared than March's race. I am hoping to cut 10 minutes off my tri time... but I am wondering if I will. :S  THe bike portion is longer in this race, and biking is my worst of the 3 sports.... BUT I have biked the course numerous times.... so I SHOULD be better at it... plus it'll be warmer than the 30 degrees my last tri was in... so I am hoping that helps... ANy suggestions on shaving off tri time???

HOPE YOU ARE ALL DOING GREAT!!

OH and I am officially the lowest weight I have been as an adult. :D I might not be an Athena for to much longer!!!

Big congrats on the weight!

I would do the run (or bike) today and move the swim tomorrow.  Then you can do another very very easy run/bike on Thur.  I would not skip the swim, as it gives your legs a break and helps you keep that all important "feel" for the water.

And for being nervous, that can be understandable.  Sometimes the first one we are just so happy to do it and finish that you don't really have any expectations.  But like you, we begin to develop goals on each race we do after that in order to try and improve.  I think that can lead us to put more pressure on ourselves.

Just look over your training and realize that you can do this and have been!  So what are you basing the 10min improvement on?  Are the races the exact same distance?  same terrain?  Are the transitions the same?  It is hard to compare one race to the next due to course variations.  The best way I have found is to look at your pace in each event from the first race, then set your goal paces for each event in this race based on your current training paces.  Does that make any sense?

Just tell yourself you will rock it and have fun with it!

I'm trying to keep up these days, but my day job has been keeping me very busy, it tends to ebb and flow, but right now it's flowing and fast.  I do my best to keep up my training log and see what you are all up to and it looks like everyone else is busy and prepping for races...very exciting times.

Since a few of you have asked, I have started up logging my bootcamp class workouts again(see my log for yesterday for last nights class)

Here is a bit of an insight to my classes:

My classes are outdoors all year long and we endure all weather conditions, but in the winter I do try to pick locations that have undercover areas.  We were offered an indoor location for this past winter, but my people said no, we want to stay outdoors...I love them!

We work in 4 week sets(with one week off between sets), where each week gets progressively more intense.  I have people of all different fitness levels ages, weights, and some have physical limitations, including asthma, pins & plates in legs, arms, soft tissue damage from accidents etc.  Everyone works at their own level, modifications to exercises or sometimes alternate exercises are given to deal with physical limitation, no one gets left behind, and everyone works at their maximum effort, however that looks(I will push if I think someone is dogging it).

Equipment we use:  a mat, a set of dumbells, a resistance band, a skipping rope and a fit ball are standard equipment, but occasionally I'll bring along medicine and/or pilate balls or a bosu, but mostly we use what our environment has to offer, stairs, hills, school tracks, benches, bleachers, playgrounds, gravel areas.

Every saturday morning we will do a few timed exercises so they will have something by which to measure improvement. And at the end of every set, I do measurements for everyone who wants it done.  Some people don't want to know the measurements, just the change.  I keep their measurement sheet and cards with the results of their timed exercises, log them in a spreadsheet and anyone can have their results emailed to them on request.

The bootcamp is a total body program, but we usually will pick an area for a set to focus on a little bit more than other areas.  Last set was core heavy, this set will be upper body, specifically, shoulders/arms, getting ready for tank top season:-

I also occasionally plan activities outside of class that people can choose to participate in.  I will be joining a few of my group on a 10km run/walk on May 9th and they have asked me if I would take them to do the Grouse Grind when it opens for the season and I'm always on the look out for other activities that I think they may enjoy.  My hope is that people in my classes choose to adopt an active lifestyle, and that the 3 hours a week they spend at bootcamp are not the only physical activity  they have.

Oh ya, can you guys help me lose 5-7 lbs when I get back.  I am struggling to get it off but thought if I mentioned it out loud it would help?  I am too heavy to be running at this weight, and yes those pounds are killing me mentally.  Don't really want to change my diet this week but will not go crazy while in Nashville knowing it will only add to the problem.

Looks like the races this week are...

Cheri - 1/2 mary
Courtney - Tri
Me - 10k

And a few others have races next weekend...

Sandra - 1/2 mary
Meggan - 10mi run
Courtney (again) - 5k

This is based on visible races that people have entered into their race logs.  If anyone doesn't know how to add a race then let me know.  And if you have a race in the next two weeks that I didn't put up here let me know.  Also if you are up for it, after your race you can enter your race report.  Trust me, I didn't do this for my first few races and went back and added them later.  It is so much fun to read through your report down the road and to see what kinds of issues and successes you had and how far you have come.

Let's make sure and motivate everyone to do their best at these upcoming races!!!
