Thanks, It's always nice when the word on the street is primarily positive about a race!

Hit to pool again today. Bilateral breathing is coming along, but it is taking a lot to get used to it. I recognize this is only day 2, but I'm used to get more air. So currently, there is very little effort on my part to go fast, but a great deal of effort on getting this right. I took in more water than I would've liked early in this morning's swim. I'm hoping this will eventually become second nature and I will be able to go faster.

I still need to adjust to getting up so early as well. Whew...movin' on.

Peace,
~Sam

jslacker - 2010-12-15 10:24 AM Nancy,

It's hard giving up the running time for swimming or weights

VERY hard.

Thanks for everyone's advise.  Going to give it a try this afternoon.  Took 4 days off after marathon, time to start IM training.

The beauty of bilateral breathing is that you can breathe whenever you want.  I train mostly bilateral, but on hard sets I switch to breathing every stroke simply because I need more oxygen.  In races I usually start breathing every four strokes (this doesn't last long) then switch to bilateral, then switch to every stroke.  In my opinion, its a big advantage over folks who can't bilateral breath.

Take it by feel on race day.  If you need more air, breath more often.  Bilateral breathing isn't worth it if you're causing yourself to become oxygen deprived.  Okay for practice though, of course.

I forced myself to learn to bilateral breath.  An Ironman veteran told me that it's important to be able to breath on both sides because of waves.  If you only breath on one side and the waves are hitting you on that side, you will take in a lot of water and be less efficient.

I believe that article is in this month's magazine. I tried to find a link on their website, but no such luck. I'll have to look when I get home.

It is in the newest one, dated January 2011; page 147, by Matt Fitzgerald.  I love his training plans and have the book "Essential Week-by-Week Training Guide" ~ good stuff in there  I used the IM level 3 training plan for FL this year and will probably use the same one for LOU.

I ripped it out of the magazine to photo copy it since its the plan I am using. If you don't have access to it I can scan it and email it to you.

I hadn't read that issue yet, but found it today and found the training program.

Jillian - thanks so much for the offer.

Happy training,

Well, I expect to have The Road To Ironman Louisville, Episode II out later today. Admitedly, it's a bit weak, by my standards, and I'm sure the standards of others, but I decided to just let it fly anyway. Part of my problem is that I allow myself to be too self-conscious and then I'm not as relaxed. That's one thing I certainly need to work on. I need to quit worrying about what others are going to think and just roll with it. Heck, I'm a podcast junkie and I enjoy the heck out of listening to triathletes ramble on about shizzle. So, if you take the time to tune in the the show...take it for what it's worth...me rambling and experimenting and evolving.
My original thought was a podcast. I've been told I have a great face for radio.

Had a solid 1:15 ride this morning, followed by lifting legs and then a 2min/4min walk/run x4. I'm still heading in the right direction. I'll be lifting arms later today.

Saw the IM footage on NBC yesterday. Being the sap that I am, I found myself tearful at times. Great inspiration...though I thought it ended kind of funky.

I'm considering posting a link to my IMLOU training plan, but I'm not sure if I want to reveal my secrets because I'm sure it will impact the possibility of me beating out the pros and standing on the podium. ...just a minute, my alarm is waking me up.

Time to get my 2-year-old dressed for the day.

Peace,
~Sam

Hey Tri Sam.

I enjoyed the blog.  No pillow necessary.  It looks about the same down here in southern Indiana. Keep up the good work.

Hey Tri-Sam!

I enjoy your blog and your videos!  Also enjoyed your post about the little girl in your classroom.  That was classic!  I can really appreciate it as I am a first grade teacher. The kids always say the cutest things.  One day someone brought me a cupcake from another class.  One of my students said "Hey, that's not fair....are you going to eat it?"  And before I could say anything one of my students replied, "Hey she can do anything she wants...she's an ironman remember?!?!"

I've been running in lots of snow and cold but it's a nice change from the heat this summer!  Anyone else enjoying the cold and snow???
