I remember reading some articles about how some people in the olham area did not like the Ironman. They were throwing tacks out on the course in 2009 I believe. Just for that reason I carried and extra tube in 2010.

There was also a story about a farmer that was going to block the course with his tractor until the police stopped him and there is graffiti on the road the has the words Ironman with the circle and a line through it.

The graffiti was in 2011. Someone from the Ironman organization went out and painted over it. I did see it and to be honest I don't know about the tack story. I have heard it for IMWI, IMLP & IMLou so I think that might be an urban legend. It started as tacks and has been broken glass, nails etc.

Hi there,

How is everyone`s training going? I hope well !

I have a question for all those finishers of IMLO. What is the toughest part of a bike course? Is it so called Finger or something else? Is it on mile 100 or 80? Any heads up is highly appreciated as always,

Take care everyone

I believe the finger part was the worst. Just after you go through LaGrange the is a great down hill only to be followed by a 90 degree left that you lose all your momentum. If I remember correctly you are kind of on back roads through that section and it has some small but nice incline rollers ( lost my chain twice in that section last time).

Last half of the second loop before hitting the flats back inot town.  The rollers started taking their toll by the time i got back there.  The out and back wasn't really that bad in my opinion.  Train hard everyone.

What rwsads said. The left after going through Lagrange is the worst for me. Some of the steeper rollers on the entire course. It is pretty much climbing or flat sections...very few downhills to catch your breath. It is on narrow roads (seemed like getting two cars on it would be tough), but there were a few spectators in this section to root you on. Oh, and you get to do this section twice

The toughest portion of the bike, as far as % percent grade is concerned, is the out and back section early in the bike.

But........the section on Ballard School Rd after LaGrange is tough because it occurs later in the ride.  And, it can be really tough when you do it again on the 2nd loop.

There are mentions of the tacks in some race reports here on this site. I don't think it's urban legend.

I saw the graffiti last year so the cover-up paint job was not well done

But to be honest, I think all those things are in the past and wouldn't let it affect the way you train or race. You can't control any of that stuff anyway.

I know its crazy... What is even crazier is that if it does not sell out. You can register at athlete check in. I can not imagine just showing up and registering on the Friday before the race.

This is probably the only Ironman Brand race that sells  out so slowly. Makes me wonder why?

There were tacks on the Louisville course.  I saw them and almost ran over them.  :-(

And a flat run!!

IMHO, the time trial swim start is another plus!

Because it's a time trial start, they allow more people to register for the event than at other IM races. Probably has more to do with why it hasn't sold out yet than anything.

Historically, Louisville has fallen between two or WTC’s most popular races (Canada & Wisconsin). What is odd about it now is that it is the same day as Canada and is $25.00 cheaper than both.

Maybe it is the fact that WTC keeps adding races?

Good point! Plus if you are like Amy and KQ'ing you only have 9 weeks to prepare hotel airfare etc for Kona.

I would say  the heat/humidity is the #1 factor, followed by no wetsuit for #2.  I don't think hills play into that much if at all.  IMMOO, Lake Placid and ImCda are as tough or tougher bike courses and they all sell out.

For me personally - I had to think hard and long before plunking down the $$ mostly because I'm not a fan of heat and humidity.

I'm sure that WTC adding IMMT and IMNYC within just a few weeks of IM Louisville is part of the reason the race is still open at this point.

I just did some quick math. Based on the participant list that was updated on 2/28/12 on the Louisville site 2375 people had registered.  I would think that it is close to selling out that is if the limit is still 3000.
