A nice 12 miler again. Wasn't as bad as I expected. Now I am gonna just relax the rest of the week and be ready for my 50k on Saturday. It will be hard to resist the urge to get out and run! Maybe I will Spin Bike on Wednesday. Easy peddle. Then after the race time to long some more misery and see if I can hit that First place by end of Challenge!!! Gonna push like a madman for that!!! Good luck on Saturday. Doesn't look to be as cold as last Saturday but if you take your time you could earn some nice points.
thats the key. Sometimes if I need some extra points I just slow the down. Easier on the knees. |

Thanks Mike Good question. I think a few months back I saw some talk about the effects of tapering, thought it was here some place. Almost like withdrawal. I have a 20 mile this weekend before I start my taper. |

I'm tapering for the Huff 50k this Saturday and once again realizing why I love/hate the taper. Taper is misdirected anger and rootless anxiety that peaks in intensity two days before your race. At that point you flip the switch and realize you're going to have to "get medieval" on the course, as Marsellus Wallace puts it. There is simply no other outlet but to beat that race's dirty face in. |

Extreme Veteran 1329 Wausau WI | Subject: RE: Crappy Winter Weather Challenge 2011-2012 I have a question that is not related to cwwc but since there are a lot of runners here I will ask. I want to do more biking and get back in the pool next year but don't want to lose my running endurance I gained this year. My plan it to run ~3 days/week, might add a couple short runs with Brewer, but still do a long run on Saturday (15 - 20 miles). The question is will I be able to maintain the long runs? I want to work up to a 50 mile run but might not be until 2013, I know when I start training for the 50 I will go back to more running. Thanks

I spent a long time working on this. This year I averaged 90k a week up to the end of may in prep for my marathon. I started riding in May and through to November. I made 134 hours on the bike this year and currently sitting at an average of 80 k a week for running. Clearly my running suffered from June - November. I guess my average to be about 70k a week. I did find that I could still handle a pretty hardcore run at lunch even with biking an hour each way to work. I usually got my long run in although more in the range of 18-25k. Last year I attempted the same thing, but my volume was closer to 70k per week by the time May rolled around in 2010 and I found I could not keep the running up nearly as much as I would like with adding biking. Not sure if it was the increased mileage this year that made me stronger or just the fact that I had another year of consistent training behind me, a little stronger and a little lighter. I think three good runs a week with a couple short little runs with your dog would be good. I would need those short runs though. 3 times a week would not cut it for me to keep my run fitness up and I would risk injury on my long runs. Keeping your mileage up, like 50k a week (you could do some lower weeks but not so many and not that often) while doing the other tri training, well, I think it is essential, especially if you have a 50 miler on the horizon. The biking and swimming does nothing to help me run. The way to succeed on those long runs is to have a consistent training history with some good peaking for races. Keep the mileage up through 2012 and you will be in great shape to do the 50 miler. That all said, I know there was a guy on here, Q, or something like that. Guy used to do 50 - 100 milers. From what I could tell he did next to no run training. |

Darren gave you some good insight and you both have way more volume than I do. For me, to keep my running strong, I have to run at a minimum 3-4 x's a week...I'm better at 4-5 but that leaves less time for other stuff. However, if I run too much, it tends to beat me up more than swimming or biking with wear and tear on this antiqued body LOL. I find that doing a day with both a run and bike helps me gain stamina - like a run in the am, pm bike. But for me, I can't handle doing both a long run/bike on a day week after week - after about 2-3 weeks the build implodes me so I keep them lower in distance. I guess if it were me, to keep that long run day, I'd likely do a swim day the day before (or rest day...but I rarely take rest days) ...thus my legs would be fresher for the distance. The day after, I'd likely do an easier bike and then start to build from there. The important thing is to be in tune with what your body can handle and to build and taper accordingly to keep from getting injured. my 2 cents |

Expert 1128 Boston | Subject: RE: Crappy Winter Weather Challenge 2011-2012 Finally getting some cold weather in Boston but wouldn't you know it I am rehabbing my achilles on the treadmill. Everytime I run outside, it makes them really really ache. SO I am doing the treadmill thing for a few more weeks. Will still get outside on the bike though. ALthough its supposed to be 50F by Thursday. |

I think listening to my body we be the thing that will tell how I can handle the long runs with less running. Thanks

Member 41 | Subject: RE: Crappy Winter Weather Challenge 2011-2012 Ran my first Ultra 50k on Saturday. (Was actually, 35.16 according to my Garmin) 7 hrs 1 min. 5th Overall. Very happy with it. No problems with gear or anything else. Ran out of water at 24 miles just as I figured. No food at all, just 1 vegan energy bar in the morning and then nothing but Infinit until 8 pm when I got home. Still wasn't hungry. Only lost 2 pounds so my intake was just perfect. Had an advantage of always carrying my gear that I race in so it worked out. Very happy overall!!! Oh, Major points by the way. Only thing I would do different would be to keep my water up. I was gonna fill at the 24 aid station with 8 to go but opted out. Took One emergency gel and powered through. Only 2 aid stations. 1 at 5miles and one at 24. Great though! |
