Yeah the Slayer dont mess on race day. BUT you have to keep your eyes on the biggest prize for yourself in training IMHO. For most of us, that is long course.

Bust it all out for any race 5k run to IM (more wisely)! However, bear in mind that the training for a sprint is not the same as the training for a long course event. Thus, you won't be at your razor sharpest. Knowing that beforehand you can adjust expectations so you dont have t beat yourself up after if you perform below your hopes.

I gave everything I had to every A race I raced. Thats why my soul was crushed when IMCDA didn't go to plan. Like Peter, Ashley, and the rest of you, I made mistakes that can't be reversed. There's a psychological toll to that.

The neat thing with short course is you can leave it all out there and you probably will be happy with your performance if your training is up to par. It does not work that way with long course.

Nice 2K swim this morning at the pool. Longest distance so far this year. Water was cooler than normal at 74.

Another question for everyone. What sort of gear does everyone have?

I have the following:

  • Wetsuit - Quintanaroo (needs to be replaced this year)
  • Bike - Fuji Aloha Tri Bike (Only negative and not sure it is negative is the 650CC wheels)
  • Run shoes - Mostly Mizuno's, but also like Asics. Have one pair Mizuno and One Asics on the go right now.

Wetsuit: Xterra Vortex sleeveless

Bike: Blue Triad SL with SRAM Force and Red components

Shoes: currently in Kinvara 2's but also like the KSwiss K-ona

Socks: I am a big sockless proponent. Regardless of distance, socks are never part of the game plan.

Addendum to prior post about racing. I hope it did not come off as me saying I don't give all during races. That is exact opposite of case. The point I was trying to make is that I try not to get worked up in races about things I can't control. On race day, the main thing I control is my readiness level. That comes from putting in the work during training. I have never gone into a race not thinking that this is just a really fast training day. If you start the race questioning your preparation, you are already behind the eight ball.

I don't have much experience during my short triathlon career but since now I am building up to 70.3 for this year i only have two races scheduled one is April 28th which is a sprint and then an oly May19th. On each race I give it my all, I have fun but I am totally spent afterwards so I have no idea how someone can still have a bike ride or a run after the race

I wish I took a pic of Slayer after his Rev3 in Anderson, SC the dude looked like he was about to pass out and I loved it because I looked like that just a little before he rolled in thru the finish loll giving it your all doesn't mean a podium place it means you beat yourself up and pushed yourself to the limit. You have to win against yourself not against other Age groupers

As far as equimpent I have

-No Wetsuit-looking to buy one in the next few weeks

-Bike 2009 Felt S32 looking to sell soon so I can upgrade (if anyone wants a nice entry level bike email me

-Shoes- New Balance- i have problems finding the right shoes because of my wide feet

I don't don't wear socks on Oly distance either. I may or may not on longer distances but the time spent putting them on doesn't make that big a difference. Comfort is more important. I just think it is a mistake to put them on for a sprint. It takes 100s of miles of cycling and hours of running to make up for the time lost in a sprint.

Equipment: Wetsuit- Zoot sleeveless

Bike- Cervelo P2 Mavic Carbones or Disc

                    Shoes- Kinvaras 2

Desoto 400 mile shorts but considering a change

I am a big fan of 650cc wheels and think they offer an advantage to smaller athletes and smaller bikes. They just don't make as much sense for me on a 61 cm frame being 6'5" as it does my 5'4" wife on her 48 cm ride.

Do those of you that do not wear socks for the run add body glide to prevent blisters/rubbing? Or do you not experience any discomfort? I have thought about trying it but don't want to ruin my feet right now.

I run pretty much everything up to a HM sockless. I have run a HM sockless but I started getting some hot spots so I could tell I was pushing the limits.

I don't do anything special. Just put the shoes on and go. I do know some people that use glide and powder to try and keep their feet dry.

Very rarely use any kind of powder or bodyglide when sockless. This is on runs ranging from dry to soaked and caked in mud, distances up to 26ish.  I have had this talk with Phat before. I think a lot can be said for finding the perfect shoe. In five years plus of running, I have never had any issues with blisters or even black nails (knock on wood).

yeah. only wear socks for 70.3/140.6. Zoots really made the difference for me. Once you try them out you realize how much time you will save and they are pretty comfortable! I sometimes lube up with glide beforehand but its not really necessary.

On the issue of gear (most of mine are listed on my logs with links), red bull shot to drink prerace, garmin 310xt is my fave. tri suit that you can wear all day so you never have to change (prefer two piece for bathroom visits)! I have a sleeveless and a full sleeve wetsuit (desoto two piece is my fave for ease of off/on). Best OWS goggles for me are from Blue Seventy.

T1 fuel belt race belt are supple, love my under armour sunglasses, then, if possible, you need a good fitting tri bike and race wheels can be rented or purchased used for max value. tri bike shoes if possible. Love my Bont sub9s! hard bottoms for max power transfer, nice arch support. def aero helmet. spray paint it bright colors or add reflective tape to help find yourself in race photos.

T2 Zoot shoes to race in. all3sports run hat.

then go get your self some medal on the podium!

I'm game. Don't have any Tri background or endurance for that matter. Taking up the sport for the challenge and the motivation to continue working out. Have the first Tri in one month. I have a used fuji team pro road bike (without aero bars) which I have been riding approximately 2/week for 2 months and running (asmuch as possible) and swimming(aiming for 3/week). No coach! Fueling during training has not been attempted other that water so far. Goals is to do an IM distance next year and a HIM the end of this year.

As far as equipment for all those just starting out, dont forget about replacing your standard shoe laces with something like yankz or whatever else is out there that let you just slip your shoes on.  Nothing like getting into T2 all fired up for your run and having your hands shaking so much that you cant tie your shoes.

Excellent point. Movements that seem pretty easy like butting on shoes, shirts, ect take on a whole new dimension when you are tired and trying to rush. Keep it simple. What is even worse is tying your shoes poorly and having them come undone after a mile. My shoe store usually swaps my laces out gratis before I leave the store. I use the Bungee's for training and every thing.

For my insomniacs: I had to cut out all grains at all times.  No more than one glass of wine, no tomato sauce, esp when combined with bread products, like pizza or bruschetta.  No sugar.  I have found, however, that I can have just about anything after a long bike ride and it has no negative effect.  Bring on the pizza!  It wasn't too much of an adjustment, really, and I feel much better and sleep really well.  The room also has to be cool and I go to bed about 45 minutes before I want to sleep to read and unwind.

Gear:

Wetsuit: old, full-sleeved

Cannondale Ironman Tri bike: will upgrade soon

Sidi Tri shoes: love them!  Also, I get a very cool tan line on my feet from wearing them.

Specialized helmet: not aero.  I would like an aero helmet for races, but have some time goals for myself before the reward.  Maybe for Vineman.

DeSoto 400 mile shorts: thinking about changing these for the run.  At my last IM, I wore them all day and they were great for the swim and bike but then I suffered from some major baboon butt on the run.  It was the most painful IM reminder.  Hurt worse than my legs the next day.

Jersey: I have a bunch of different tri tops that I like.

Asics Gel Kayanos: love, love, love these.  I always wear Balega socks with them, even for short course.  I'm really blister prone but you all have inspired me to try sockless for short distances.  Not sure what that will do to the stink factor of the shoes, but I'm willing to try.

For long training runs, I run with an amphipod hydration belt.  It's awesome and has a pocket for gels, phone, keys, etc.

Run training partners: the pig ninjas

Bike training partners: Team Badazz

Masters' team: UCSD

nerdjock-i don't really notice any increased odor from running sockless. one tip though, rather than washing shoe, throw them in freezer. this will kill most of odor causing bacteria.

I respect that, but after nearly 25 years of insomnia where I wouldn't sleep at all or for more than an hour for weeks at a time (no joke) combined with a career in infectious diseases where I perform expensive, technical experiments with deadly diseases, giving up grains was totally worth it.  That said, I indulge sometimes.  I'm never going to skip cake at a party, sometimes eat pizza after a long ride, and go to wine parties.  Giving up grains really wasn't that hard for me, since I've never eaten much processed food and saw grains and vehicles to deliver things I like more into my mouth.  We eat really delicious meals.  If anyone is thinking about going down this path (or just decreasing grain consumption), I can send you lots of good meal ideas.

Meant it humorously, thinking about last nights dinner with the Italian side of the family of pasta, tomato sauce, and plenty of wine and then leftovers for lunch today.  And the fact that I didnt get enough sleep last night because of how late they all stayed over.
