Reached my goal of 4 weeks x 4 workouts. Getting the hang of preparing both the week and night before. Makes it a little easier on the morning workouts. Will finish the month on track and considering some options for February? May purchase a membership to begin working one of their plans for my first sprint any suggestions?

Have also been trying some TI swimming techniques. there is a class coming to our area instead of spending the $300 to attend may use youtube, or buy a video any suggestions?

Finish January Strong Everyone!

Have you picked your  sprint yet?  The timing of the race can help determine if you need a dedicated plan yet...

And great job hitting your monthly training targets.  Consistency and perseverance are huge when it comes to effective training.

1250 yard swim this afternoon.  Mostly 50 yard repeats with a few 100s mixed in.  Form is still pretty awkward, but it's coming along.

Way to go on hitting your goals! I have been off target for too long. About to change that up. I let a great weekend (weather wise) get slip by without doing what I should have done.

For what you get at a minimal cost of a paid membership versus the cost of other plans, I think it is worth the cost. I have used an Oly and two HIM plans and thought I was well prepared.

Have a great day everyone.

Steven I just saw your post on the 20 miler, great run. Strong training going on at your house! Keep it up. Did you use an ice bath to start recovery?

Jay, the wetsuit bit gets easier. There are videos out there to help with putting it on. It does get easier. My tips, Body Glide on the wrists and ankles. Pull it up uncomfortably in the legs and groin area, and it will feel better in the neck and shoulders. Sleeveless suits don't feel as constricted, but you do give up some bouyancy and hydrodynamics.

Cynthia, good recovery for sure. I went to bed last night at 9:30 and didn't get up until 7. Hope that gives me a jump start on rest and recovery.

I may have pushed it a little on the 5.6 mile run Saturday. I went from about 3.5 miles on a treadmill to 5.6 outside in a two week span. I read that 10% more should be the max each week and my legs are letting me know that they didn't appreciate it. Having said that, it did feel good to run that far at about an 8:30 min/mi pace. I was expecting more like 10:00 min/mi.  This week is recovery week and I will be taking it easier on the running this week for sure.

No ice bath, unless I count the frozen slush puddles on the streets! This was my third 20 mile run, and I'm not nearly as sore afterwards as I was on my first. Seems like lots of marathon plans only call for one or two, but I feel much more confident going into the event with a few under my belt.

I'd have to agree on the value of the membership. Besides the plans, there are a lot more articles available. If you want to give it a better test drive, you can always choose one of the shorter membership options.

Returned from my business trip and leave tomorrow for another.  Traveling really cuts into my time for swimming.  Last Thursday, I got up early and got my swim in before I left town.  I took my bicycle on my trip.  So on Friday, I rode my bike for 10 miles and then ran for 4.5 miles right afterward.  Sunday, I rode my bike for 8.5 miles and ran for 2 miles.  The 2 mile run really got to me.  I thought I was going to have to stop.  I felt like I was trying to get sick the whole day, but my body just could not make up its mind.  Maybe a better way to say it is that my body is really working overboard to fight off me getting sick.

Could not swim today because I got to attend a  "Lunch with Dad" function at my daughter's school.

Okay folks, I get back to training yesterday and after an hour on the trainer I'm walking downstairs and my calf feels like it exploded. Today is a good bit better, but I'm out for a few days.

I say that to confirm that R.I.C.E. works. My compression sleeve, and icing consistently is working wonders. I am not an easy patient to deal with, and I don't get injured easily.

Take care of your injuries so you can get back to training.

Good luck recovering from your injury Chris. I am in a recovery week. I am recovering so much I forgot to take my swim gear to work today so missed my swim. So busy at work right now but I still got my bike class in tonight and then went back to work.

Jay,

It is difficult when work is sucking the life outta you.  Hang in there and the training will help relieve some of the work stress.

At the university I work at it is scholarship deadline week and I have tons of paper work, crying moms, pushy dads, and panicked students calling every min. of the day.  Talking them down from the ledge and making them feel like their child is my sole concern can  be stressful.  But, it does wonders to run it out!

Jay & Cynthia, job stresses can certainly get in the way of our training, but I agree totally with Cynthia a good run or other hard session to channel our stress or other feelings is so satisfying. Isn't it a shame that training and racing isn't our job? I'm sure that comes with its own set of stresses too. On a side note, I started a class IV cold laser therapy for my calf last night along with my rest, ice, compression, elevation and anti-inflamatory. I think I may be back to training sooner rather than later (fingers crossed). Which makes me think I need to pay more attention to stretching for flexibility and proper range of motion, recovery efforts. It is so easy to skip those things and just concentrate on SBR. What does everyone else do for stretching/flexibilty routines and for true recovery (besides rest/days off)?

Take the time to let it heal. I have been dealing with a calf problem very similar for almost two years and let it rest just enough to feel better. Each time i got back on the bike and pushed it I rode through the pain that felt like the calf was ripping apart. I am doing PT right now and am off the bike.  Yesterday I was allowed to ride on the stationary bike for 15 min with some resistance. No pain, but later spasms. I am so bummed.

Finally the move is over, YAY!!! I only got one workout in over the past 4 days and I feel like I neglected my body and I miss the gym and pool.  One good thing was that I didn't eat any junk food, although it was tempting.  Hopefully back to the grind today (if I can find my swim suit!).

A good saying for today's swim workout is "No rest for the weary". We swam a total of 4200yds, lots of sprints! This was supposed to be a breaststroke week :-) , guess i misplaced the memo during the move.

Sounds like everyone is going through some challenges. My "recovery" week has been terrible. After accidentally missing my first swim workout, I had to miss today's as well. I will push it til tomorrow which is supposed to be off day. I also missed my run last night due to work and could miss my bike training tonight. I have not been this stressed in quite a while. I agree that a good exercise session would help if I can find a way to get it in before 11 pm!

Brian, you are currently my inspiration. 4000+ yrds swimming. I could not touch that! Very impressive...keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing you on tv in Kona!

Stretching...when I began training, my calves seemed tight all the time. I keep stretching them and finally they seem to have loosened up so they feel like they should during workouts. I  try to stretch before and after each workout.

Wow!  4000+ yards.   That's almost three times my longest swim.  I'm impressed.

Thanks, I swam on year round swim teams from about 6-18 years old, then I was a rescue swimmer in the Navy.  I love swimming and anything having to do with the water!

It's the run part that I always dread. I'm am jealous of your 20 mile run Steven.

I have had the most challenging week.  Work has kept me busy with depositions and meetings.  I have not had time to work out one time this week.  Will be in meetings all day today and then this God awful week will be over.
