im not a nutritioninst, but have paid a lot of attention to macros while working to lose weight (i dropped about 80 lbs over 6 about 7 months, and have kept it off for a bit now).  and a common thing i had been told when discussing diet with people was that maintaining anythign more than about a 1000 cal deficit a day can be dettrimental.  I use myfitnesspal to track my intake daily and have its limits set to 50% carbs, 30% protein and 20% fats now, when i was really focusing on cutting weight is traxcked to 40/40/20, and generally tried to keep the fats on the low side.

When you're working hard carbs & fat = fuel, protein helps muscle growth

(Please correct me if i'm wrong  I'd love to know if I'm screwing myself up here too )

I just looked at my weekly chart and so far this week I'm at 43%carb/36% protein/21% fat.

Last week I was 49% carb / 30% protein / 21% fat. The week before was 57%/26%/17%.

Congrats, Me!  That's awesome!  2 weeks in and you're seeing noticeable gains!

Thank you guys and gals!!   I knew there was a reason I kept all of you around.

My next question for the team is regarding muscle imbalances.  In the off season my toes point straight ahead and I walk normally.  After building up a base (mainly by running) my toes point outwards and I look like a duck.  Obviously I have created a muscle imbalance.  My question is which muscles do I train so as to offset the apparently massive gains elsewhere.

Survey says?

Oriolepwr will make fun of me, but I will stick to my guns here and suggest yoga as a great exercise.  If you guys are reading my training logs, it's pretty much the only exercise I've been getting (outside of a little swimming) the last month.  I am looking to tackle a couple more marathons this year and I'm trying to work out some of the imbalances in my body.  Do you have access to a yoga studio near you?

Matt-  Actually no.     I know Yoga is tough and a very very good thing to do, and will help with running.   So I suggest it as well.

I have very very bad wheels.  (toe joint surgery)   I feel sort of like that misfit train with square wheels on its caboose that lived on the island of misfit toys.    I have a great engine, but those damn square wheels  limit me.    and REALLY hurt in Yoga.  Or I would be doing it as well.

No idea.    But this does remind me of a convo I had.

I remember when I was seeing a Physical therapist while recovering from a partially torn Achilles.

Let me watch you run on a treadmill Dave!

AWESOME!  Finally I get to run again!  let's light this candle!

"Um Dave don't get too excited K?"

Soooo  pretty awesome form don't you think?

"Dave......."

"Ever watch those nature shows"

Uh oh this can't be good..

"You know those nature shows where some predator is attacking a wildebeast or whatever?"

Um where are you going with this?

"You run like a wounded mother defending it's young"

OMG! .....   But a FAST one!   Right???

"Um ya Dave  you are a miracle of adaptation"

That's a compliment then isnt it!   :-)

Thanks.... but this is what I swam the first go around. I haven't been in a pool since.

The swim workouts that you are putting up will they help increase endurance and decrease time? Since right now I am just working on doing a sprint tri, will it be more important to work on drills, or just all out swimming the distance plus some.

I do have a swimming background, just FYI, I did swim on a swim team for 7 years (long, long time ago), and am a certified WSI.

OK, wetsuits.  I love talking equipment!

You'll need a triathlon specific wetsuit.  I don't know why they are required, I've never heard of that.  Must be some cold water you are swimming in?

So I found out why wetsuits are required. The Japanese lady at the fitness office told me there is a large abundance of jellyfish in the water! She must have noticed the shocked look on my face because she quickly reassured me, "oh, not all the types of jellyfish in the water sting!"...right...only the ones that rub their tentacles in your face... In all seriousness, I guess it happens frequently and people say it's not that bad. They just rub ointment on their stings when they get to transition and continue on their merry way.

Matt I'm wearing magic shoes.  Mama said they'd take me anywhere!

I have several pairs of asics gt2160 and brooks ghost 4 which are new and fitted for my neutral gait.  I have had my stride studied also but it wasn't as colorful as Dave's.  I have a neutral efficient stride that is only hampered by my natural ability to go slow.

There are tons of yoga studios around.  I even have a friend who is an instructor.  Really I would like to know which muscle is out of whack and therefore which one I need to counter it.  I am willing to bet that it is my quads and I just need to counter with my hamstrings but it could also be my glute med.  Yoga is something I will incorporate eventually though.

Well, sounds like you had the fitting and gait analysis I was going to suggest  I'm honestly not sure on the anatomy, Richard.  Bryan, you're an RN- any clue?

Hey everyone!

I met a friend at our gym on base today and we did two group classes.  The first one was Spin class and the second was Zumba... I LOVE LOVE Zumba!!! Got basically two hours of cardio and loved every minute of it.  I always forget about the classes that they offer and I am one that gets bored really fast so throwing some new stuff into my workouts is good for me.  Something that I want to share is when I got to the spin class I started setting the bike up like my Tri bike LOLOL everyone else was sitting and reaching for the handle bars and I was laying flat down like I was on my bike.  Anyways because of my Sufferfest videos I want to report that I whizzed right through the class and everyone else was huffing and puffing.  Cool  ten minute break and then Zumba started in the next room.  I guess I am in better condition then I thought because when she said we were going to *cool down* I was like thats it??? We cant go longer?? Tongue out  always a great feeling to be able to hang with people 20 years younger then me.  I still have not ran one mile for the month of January.  We are having a horrible Ice storm right now and the weather has been freezing.  My running group that I usually work out with starts workouts back up in two weeks.  They decided at the spur of the moment to hold a Spring Tri!!!  It is next Saturday and Im excited about it except for the swimming part.  This month has been a nightmare with the hubs deploying and now I have to go away for almost the entire month of February for work.  Our work days are crazy and long hours.  I will be able to come home on the weekends.  Matt I was going to ask you for some suggestions.  I will be at a hotel that has a small pool.  Can you give me some drills to maybe practice? I did watch the TI video and it seems some of those might really help me.  I basically can float, dog paddle and side stroke. Ive tried doing freestyle but it seems I suck at it.  I know its my breathing that is screwing everything up. Any suggestions on what I should work on while I am away?  Keep up the good work everyone!!!

You're right! If urine will keep the jellyfish away, I'm all for it! Peeing in your wetsuit is now dual purpose.

I would suggest eval by a sports medicine Physical Therapist. I am currently donig therapy for a muscle imbalance that became evident when I increased my mileage for the 1/2 I am running in a few weeks. The rx from the PT was amazing and i am doing much better.

It is money well spent.

Hi Steve

A general rule of thumb is to not cut your caloric intake by more than 20%. If you do, your body will register it is not getting enough energy in. As a reaction it will then start to store as much energy as possible in the form of fat and at the same time break down muscles to fuel your consumption.
That's the last thing you want to happen.

In the end, you don't want to lose weight per se, you want to lose fat. Buy a cheap pair of calipers like the Accu-Measure ones (not affiliated, less than 10 dollars) and use that to track your progress.

As for fat loss, consensus is that 1-2 pounds per week is about the max you realistically should strive for. You might lose more during the first couple of weeks. But in the long run that should be what you can expect to achieve.

Kind regards
Max

A lot of the Ti beginner drills are very static and probably be done in a small hotel pool. Sounds like a great time to work on balance and rotation.

Today's workout was two times Day 2, Week 2 of the 0 to 1650 swim program (2x900 yards).  I was in and felt good and just repeated the session.  I have to find more comfortable goggles though - the ones I have are pinching the bridge of my nose - a lot of pain at the end of the session.  And another thing - H2Audio makes swimming a lot more fun, especially when the earbuds stay in.
