Expert 1480 Somewhere in the Swamps of Philly | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Race went well overall. Current and chop during the swim were brutal. Longest HIM swim ever. Left the water 60/88 in AG. Picked off 30 guys on the bike and another 4 on the run. Finished 26/88 in AG. Happy with the effort and had a lot of fun. RR to follow. |

Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Congratulations Joe! Jim and Gabe thank you for well wishes re: Benjamin. I will send the book re: nutrition his way. Benjamin is doing so well now - a major transformation. I have started to notice some discomfort in left achilles tendon. I am stretching and doing some self-massage. does anyone have any other suggestions? My first tri of the season - a sprint - is on July 20th. |

Stretching before bed and before I get up. Icing when it is really bad. My brother wears those strassburg socks, and swears by them. |

Expert 1480 Somewhere in the Swamps of Philly | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Great to meet up with Samy and his wife last night over a couple of beers at the end of a very long day. RR will be posted later in the week, but I checked my Garmin after reading some criticism over the race length on ST. Garmin showed distance as 1.5M - others reported the same. |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Today's run was a killer and I was not prepared for the heat. We went from mid to upper 50's last week to mid 80's this week. The 2 miles through the swamp killed me. |

Veteran 360 Waukegan, IL | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Had a GREAT training week last week. I think it was my biggest week ever and I felt great at the end of it. The past 2 days were a different story. My long ride yesterday was cut short due to some unexpected obligations. Not upset about this as I'll always be happy that I chose spending time with family over training. I was a little tired today due to a late night. I had to call my swim early because I was getting nausea. I think it MIGHT have something to do with an uneven portion of my stroke. I was detecting some up and down bobbing and I think that might have something to do with it. I'll be paying attention to this during the week. My run was a speed workout on the track. I decided to deviate from the plan in favor of some longer intervals. Goal was 5-6x1600 at 6:00 w/1:00 rest. Made it through 3 of them and then had some stomach issues. Might have been the heat I'm not used to...might have been no wind...might have been the new pre-workout supplement....I don't know. I"ll have to try this again next week. I have another Xterra on Saturday...so Friday is a travel and race prep day. Happy training everyone! Stay healthy and hope those injuries clear up soon! |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Originally posted by JoePetto Here's the RR: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... Good report, sounds like a tough day. Those big waves are a SOB to swim in. I love that area, what a great place to have a tri. The running store a go to stopped selling Hoka shoes. They said they were tough to sell and weren't good for winter running and adverse conditions. IDK, I still like Zoot (they don't sell those either, I have to buy them on line). |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Lake Huron finally hit 50 deg., I was able to have my first OWS (yeah?) 1 ft rollers, nothing like Joe's race. Wow am I out of swim shape. It looks like I have a lot of work to do this Summer. Juan- Do you have specific questions about your taper, or are you just looking for general advice? |

A bit disoriented about how to train and what to eat this last week.... Good luck in your first tri! Don't kill yourself training this week, reduce volume to 50% of your normal training volume and you will be fine. Remember that you gain fitness when you rest, not when you train. Also, you want to be fresh and ready for your race. As for what to eat, stay away from fiber and fats, especially two days before the race. Lean protein and carbs is what I rely on the day before the race. And remember, enjoy the race!! |

Expert 1480 Somewhere in the Swamps of Philly | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Relishing some time off from training. The totality of the effort and enjoyment derived from last week's race has been really compelling for me. No PRs or anything of note from the race, but, the lessons learned are huge. This is the first time in several years that I did not log an appreciable increase in time on a race by race basis. Ordinarily, I'd see this as a set back, but not today. Life's obstacles thwarted my path but I overcame. Why we lineup on race day is so much more important than the number we achieve at the end. The nobility lies in the effort and not in the result. Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Joe- I love the photo, what a great moment for you and your girls, that is better than any PR. Also, I really like the perspective. It is easy to get caught up in the day to day and the numbers and forget about what got us started in this sport. |

New user 669 Madrid | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Now I understand why you guys are all so hooked up with this sport - I finished my first tri ever and after 6 months of finding time to train with busy work, family, travels and deadlines, I can say today has been one of the greatest days in my life!! The discipline that this sport requires and the variety of training is just awesome! My family and friends were there to support me, did my PR (no previous records...), raised more money than I expected for my charity (Make-a-Wish)...what else can I expect!! Thanks for your continuous comments and suggestions, enjoy the weekend! |

That feeling you get crossing the finish line and the time spent relishing in the accomplishment is why you get hooked. Well done. |

Member 388 Miami | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Congrats Juancho!! The first one is special for sure. You will either hate it or love it, glad it was the second for you! By the way, should we all log our training from June in the spreadsheet now that the month is over? We were doing a challenge in June, right? Edited by davidfedez 2013-07-01 2:28 PM |

Expert 1109 Guatemala | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Congrats Juancho on achieving your first tri finish, very well done and welcome to the club! Joe, great pic with your daughters at the finish line along with your personal reflection! I just got back from a fun, intense business trip to Taipei, but really productive overall. I was only able to run 3 days during the last 9 days with the hardest being a 13 mile run in Taipei's brutal humid heat. I'm 12 days away from my Vineman 70.3 tri and unfortunately have not been able to put in the amount of training I would had liked. So we will see how it goes. |
