Want to do it, but not sure what to commit to. I am in the midst of getting a new bike (hopefully in the next few weeks) so...biking is out. Running is what I would like to do and not looking to break records so probably time or distance.....HELP!?!? Sorry to wait to the last minute. What? No swimming? ![]() OK, running..... On your December log, I see this: Run: 7h 15m - 29.75 Mi How difficult was it for you to achieve this? -- If it was a real struggle, you may want to consider a time or distance similar to this. (In other words, just "do it again.") -- If it was "not too bad," you may want to add a bit of time or distance. (Perhaps a maximum increase of 10% for the month -- which takes you to a maximum of 8 hours, or 32.75 miles.) Do you want to go by time, or by miles? I'm not sure how to judge which is better for you, but I'm sure some others in our group will have suggestions. Personal opinion - I try to set goals that challenge me, but won't kill me (or injure me). I've seen people set too high a goal, and end up with injuries. That's not good.... Also, remember that it's ok to raise your goal later on. So if you go with, for example, 32 miles, and you reach it by week 3, you CAN set a new (higher) goal. (Some challenges actually have a "penalty" for reaching your goal early. But this month's doesn't. So if you hit your goal early , you CAN set a new one.) Hope this helps a bit. And I'm sure that others here can give you some good guidance on this.... Dee |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree with the Queen of Challenges! Set a goal that you have to work to meet but that won't kill you. When I first started building my run mileage last year, I got hooked on the monthly iPod plus challenges. That kept me motivated on a lot of days when I would have just blown off running. Just keep in mind that you're in this for the long haul so make sure that ego/pride don't put you in a situation that will cause injuries like building up distance too fast. You'll do great and besides, we'll be there to aggravate you every step of the way (literally, based on the way Dee and I are posting today

Remember that team I mentioned before? The one with 10,799 posts in one month. Well, the first 4 names on that team helped with a large portion of those. LOL In other words, I'd be willing to bet that Team C will win the "Post Count Challenge," the "Glitter Challenge," and the "Motivational picture posting" Challenge.... It's a GREAT group, by the way. It's going to be absolutely crazy there, but very definitely a FUN kind of crazy, too. ![]() (Put it this way, I plan on Also, they tend to do really well on Challenges. They talk a lot, but they train hard, too. ![]() ![]() |

During the September Challenge, we had some "side challenges" going. Result was that I was DETERMINED to swim until my arms fell off.... End result - I got the distance done, but I developed tendonitis in my shoulder. It was a frustrating 2 1/2 months until I recovered.... (But I'm better now, and ready to swimmy swim swim! Ha!) |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gads, I go out for dinner and come back and I missed a massive conversation... Pam, there is nothing wrong with being born in the 80s, other than you are probably younger than my children -- ouch... Anyone other than me born in the 50s??? Chris, I too got a good laugh out of "lifeguard the shallow end of the gene pool". I have a couple of good friends and clients involved with emergency medicine and the stories they tell me blow my mind. Julie, follow Dee's insights. Do what you would least likely to get done on your own. I took swimming as I will come up with almost any good excuse to miss it. We will all be with you in whatever you pick. Dee, as you noted, FOLLOW your own advice. Don't over-train, stress your body and then let it heal stronger. If you miss the heal part and over-train you know the outcome. I look for your leadership but don't hit the self-destruct button by accident. Good to see everyone having so much fun. We got a PLEO for Christmas and he is whining for some attention. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well thank you very much for the 1989 comment...I am actually a 1985 gal, good year smack right in the middle of the decade. I can't imagine organizing one of the challenges...yet somehow it sounds like an interesting challenge...maybe after I graduate! Who is doing anything fun tomorrow? How about cramming in some last minute miles to end the year? |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Emerson - thanks for posting a link to the challenge! Mike - Those are some nice goals for January! ![]() Pam - Organizing the challenge is fun, but it's also a lot of work. (And wait until next week, when everyone decides to CHANGE their goals. LOL) Great idea on getting in some last minute miles tomorrow - I HAD planned to do that... until I encountered a batch of germs that caused my nose to stuff up, and gave me a cough that sounds like the mating call of flock of geese. ![]() Eric - Are you impressed? I've put into several replies into ONE post! (And I didn't even include any glitter...) ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy New Year Everyone! Pam, I will add six +/- today to break 100 miles for the month. Less than I wanted but OK for the month that includes a lot of travel and Christmas. And, I look forward to your new picture. Dee, I woke up to your "glitter" this morning. On line at 5:00 AM and you had already been there! You are amazing, Happy New Year to you too... For all of you in the emergency care business, you have my respect for tonight. There is a lot of stupid out there on New Years Eve. To everyone: Be safe tonight, there will be a lot of idiots on the road! Edited by etknowles 2007-12-31 6:56 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We must have shamed Dee into combining posts or else she was just in a hurry....probably the 2nd option. If I haven't said it lately, you guys are a great group. I love the fact that there is something going on in here all the time plus you guys are "inspire"-ing each other. My group last year was decent at inspires but werent that great at keeping the chatter going. I think it helps everyone to stay involved and motivated! Thanks to all of you!!! I'm 6.8 miles short of 600 miles running this year and seriously thinking about trying to do that today. Of course, I haven't worked out in about a week because of this #**#(@# cold that refuses to go away. Might have to run anyway. Woke up to see the sun today for the first time in about 4 days. Considering we are 16 inches behind on rain this year it's been nice to have rain. We were starting to wonder if 2008 might be the Year of the Duathlon 'Cause There Ain't No Water in the Lakes or YODCTANWL for short.. ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the glitter once again Dee. You have to teach me too. Also, thank you sooooo much for getting the challenge together, I know it is a lot more work then people realize, it takes time. I don't know about everyone else but I am chomping at the bit to get going for the new year! It is so exciting to have a wonderful group like ours to share our progress, successes and defeats with, and we will all have some of each in my experience. I will be there everyday to check in on all of you and cheer you on. I will work up a couple of different tee-shirt designs for our group and everyone can put their two cents in on the final decision. I can't wait to wear it out training, now everyone will know I'm not the only fitness freak I'm in a group of them ![]() HAPPY NEW YEAR MEDIC0020 GROUP! Anyone other than me born in the 50s?? Pam, I too have a daughter that is older then you....plus, I just turned the big 50 this year...so, yes Emerson...I am a product of the 50's. What year were you born?

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow Julie, you look great for 50, I'm impressed! Well I'm right behind you kid, I'm 46 and born in 1961, my daughter is 21 and son 15... Julie we are doing the FL IM in 2010 correct? ![]() My husband said he would go with me, it would be cool to meet you some day! So are we looking at that as our goal? I know I would love to do the IMKY in 2009, but wonder if I can be ready by then. Pam - I think I have already said I really respect you for having such high goals for someone your age, you are in the minority. You remind me of my daughter. I'm glad to have you in our group. Eric and Chris - You have my deepest respect for working in the medical field, it takes special people to do that, if we didn't have you we would have know-one to help us in our time of need. The Emt's always were so good to my Dad the 3 times he needed to be transported for stroke, copd and kidney failure. It is a very scary time for the patient and the family and it is all put in your hands to handle...No pressure there.hmmm Keep up the great work! Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Julie, The answer is 1956. Eric and Chris, we have a special place in our hearts for EMTs. If you have personal e-mails in your profile, I will send you a story. I think that Pam and Julie may have read it already it. Read or delete as you see fit.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So much for my day being boring.....I had hoped to get in my 6 mile run today to round out my mileage but that hasn't happened. I've spent half the day dealing with an armed subject barricaded in a house and now I'm running around doing tv interviews about our preparations for new years. Sucks when the job gets in the way of a workout Eric |

Can I join up too? I have to check out the course...but I can imagine the bike is flatter than IM WI. Thank you for all the kind words about my motivation. But the main reason why I have stayed this motivated and obsessed with the sport is because of this absolutely great support network. Thanks everyone! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy New Year ALL!!!! Glad to see no one was offended by the "shallow end of the gene pool" comment. I'm not the most politically correct person and I have to watch what I say when it comes to work. We have very interesting "dinner conversations" here. Eric: In Seattle it's called a "police invol." when we get our drunks. I know most of the frequent flyers by there first names. The problem is I'm the biggest RN in the dept so I get to the bouncer and peacemaker when they get out of control. Tonight when I get to work the first thing I need to do is make sure we have multiple sets of restraints ready to go. Sounds like everyone is getting set for the challenge, so I will have to check it out and see if I can still get in. Good luck to everyone with that!! I hope everyone has a happy and safe new years!!!! Chris |
