Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Amy, agreeing with everything that John said... definitely get compression sleeves, i swear by mine. ANd the Active Wrap (i know i mentioned it before, but i really love it, so there, i'm mentioning it again lol) My shin pain went away when I found the most amazing sports medicine doc who said i need orthodics and this was half way through this marathon training. Granted, i've been getting ultrasound therapy every week, too, but orthodics really make a difference. so that's maybe something worth checking out? (mine were completely covered by insurance). hth! Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LRR... Finish line in May may be hard for me to do... I have my first Century on June 6, and that's what I'm concentrating on... it's taking ALL my time! If I could run, I could find a finish line no problem... Oh yeah, let me share, I went to a Chiropractor (friend of mine) in St George, he said I have tons of scar tissue along my shin bone (no shin splints) and he massaged it, he said a few more treatments like that and I should be able to run - also, my hips were WAY out of line! Now to find a good Chiro in Vegas who can help me.... wish me luck! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Long hard workout today, but it was good. Swam 2800 yards focusing on "total immersion" method. I think there is something to it. I reduced my strokes per 25 yards from avg of 21 to avg of 17 on my first day. Ran 5.41 miles following the swim, felt pretty good. It is in the logs. I haven't been noting this in the logs but guess I should have. I have been doing a core workout 3 days a week in the morning to strengthen, you guessed it, my core. My gut is hard as a rock, only problem is, it is still covered with about 6 pounds of fat. Working on it but it is tough. Gary, didn't you do a tri this weekend? Lena, still waiting on my cake. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for all the congrats, you guys! So awesome to have so much support ![]() Billy, sunshine, when you figure out a way to ship a cake, you let me know, and trust me, i will make you one. Do you ever come anywhere near Chicago? I'm not a sore loser and will live up to my promises and bake you something cool (and fatten you up for the rematch, so i can win).. Diane, when i started seeing Dr D-the sports injuries chiro, he started doing the ultrasound therapy on my shin for that same reason-to break up the scar tissue on my shins. i have been seeing him every week since Feb, and I'm convinced my shin is happy and didn't even bug me (well, hardly) during the marathon and now, 2 days later in recovery... Definitely worth finding somebody local who can help you with that! If you are interested, I could ask Dr D if he knows anyone in your area? let me know if you want the info.... Bryan, I'm considering a 10 miler this month, just depends if i can work it into Memorial Day weekend plans, so I will *likely* have another finish line this month ![]() And I will find a race to volunteer at, you are so right, the volunteers really MAKE the race. I have done tris that I have absolutely no desire to do again (Danskin) because volunteer organization sucked, nobody knew anything...and they didn't even wait for the slower folks-we were walking to our cars and saw ppl still racing and the stations were empty and abandoned. That race has lost all of my respect, despite fancy shirts and endorsed speakers. On the other hand, Illinois Marathon that I just ran-unbelievable! again, because of the volunteers and how well-run everything was..... so i totally get it, and agree that we as athletes need to help out ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wanted to share about my 4 year old cuteness.... I gave him the commemorative timing chip from the marathon, and explained how Mommy wore it on her shoe, so the main race computer would know how fast Mommy was running. He's been taking it to bed with him last two nights, saying it helps him go to sleep fast. hehe |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Went to a new ART Doc yesterday - I'm still as inflammed today as I was when I stopped running 5 months ago... He could barely treat me, I was soooo tender! He put me on Motrin 3x per day to bring down the inflammation and told me to wear compression socks to sleep, and do ice massage 2x daily... then I'll go back on Monday and hopefully, he can start the ART treatments... He said he'll get me on the road again - he liked that I said I wasn't gonna start running for at least a month. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all!! Lena - great report, sounds like you had a blast!!! Okay, having to swap up races. Was supposed to do a tri this Saturday but this weekend is packed, especially with Mothers day. So skipping Saturdays race and racing the following Sunday. Slightly shorter tri but its the T-Gator Series and now I get to do all three! Spent the last hour repairing the A/C. Came home to find one of the outside units making a racket. Turned it off, pulled it apart to find that some wires had come loose and wrapped around the fan which could not spin. Take fan off unwrap, remount wires, put back together, tada! It works! Saved me a $100 service call. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all! Just swinging by to harass everyone! Am I the only one who is going to post here! I can be quite annoying!!! FYI, everyone needs to swing by Mav's blog. She had a crash on her bike, she is okay and is having surgery on her feet. One tough lady! (I think I am in love!) Just found out a group is going to hold an Oly in Oct here in LA! May do a relay team if I can find one (assuming they will have relay teams). |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Gary - bite me for the post above.....LOL....hey don't really worry too much about the next 6 weeks or so....just have fun until the IMplan starts. You are ready for it my friend. Lena - hilarious on the 4 yr old humor.... You are all doing a great job.....by the way, there is no REQUIREMENT to hit a finish line this month....simply a challenge if it fits in your plan....if I had a century June 6 I would only do something this weekend or next and that is only if you can find something convenient and you probably have big rides those weekends anyway.....no worries. All - Mav had surgery on her feet today. She is recovering nicely from both the foot surgery and a bike crash yesterday. They think she may have separated her shoulder. So her timing is perfect.....she will heal from all of this at the same time. I had reassured her that if she had to get hurt now is the time....she is a little stressed over being hurt a lot so let's all be supportive (I know you will). I also want to say a few words about OVER training. We are all type A - hard driving....take the hill type people. Yes you are, I know. As a result, we typically have the attitude that if 50 miles is good then 70 is better, if swimming twice a week is good then swimming 5 times must be better or if I run 4 hours of intervals instead of 30 minutes, I know I will get faster. This just isn't the case. Take this to heart. You MUST recover. You must oscillate in your fitness. Understand, I am not saying that anyones issues - be they shin splints or Morton's Neuroma might have been caused by over training - I am simply pointing out a FACT of life and training that you must recover. Remember, during workouts you are destroying muscle - stressing it and then during recovery, the muscle rejuvenates larger than before. It certainly makes sense that if you continue to just tear it down, it can't ever grow and will certainly, at some point, fail. My experience with that failure is that it rarely occurs at a good time. Mav - get well....NOW |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes, I am a slacker for not posting much lately. I have been traveling all of this week. This was a tough week to get anything in. Hope everyone's training is going awesome. Everyone wish Amy good luck. She has a big race tomorrow. Mav, the bright side is, even with a separated shoulder and two feet in a cast, you can probably still beat me in a swimming race. Lena, awesome RR. |

![]() | ![]() Good morning all! First...RUN JOHN RUN!!!! Best of Luck to AMY!!!! CANT WAIT TO HEAR ABOUT EVERYONES RACES!!!!!!! Lena, wondeful report!!! So ..................Thursday I decided I would go for a long bike before I had surgery on my feet on Fri. I was having a great time and at about 35 miles...the sky opened up and it started to pour! I approached some railroad tracks that were at a bit of an angle and as I drove over my bike slid out from under me. Really wacked my head, my helmet is toast! I also seperated my shoulder ( not surgical) bruised my hip and my ego. It could have been worse. Thank God it wasnt. Yesterday I had nausea nad a wicked headache, which actually took my mind off the surgery. I had 2 nueromas removed from the ball of my feet. They were quite large and caused me alot of pain and numbness while on the bike and run. I also was have terrible cramps/foot seizures. So i decided on surgery as steroid shots had not worked. I feel good today. The dressings ar very bulky and make it difficult to walk. I am hopeful that this will solve my probs. Now I just have to make it for 3 weeks of no training. That will be the hardest part for me! It will just mean way more computer time!!!! Thanks for all the support. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Go John!!! Go Amy!!! Go Billy!!! Makes me wish I had raced today but alas it was for the best. Next weekend is my time again. LRR - actually feeling like a slug has been nice. No pressure and the bike training is actually fun. Had a nice outdoor ride today. Intervals with some hill climbing. No hills nearby that are really significant (nothing like Dianes) but there is a hill then rollers so I hit it and then repeat. I should do one session just that but it will have to wait until June. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got a finish line today. The race went really well. It was so windy though. The first 5.5 miles were into the wind. I was drafting behind anyone I could to keep the wind from hitting me too much. The last 4 miles had the wind at our backs and it was awesome. Temps were in the high 40's. Great temps to run in. Over 30,000 runners. Mav, I am so glad that you are recovering now. Sorry to hear about the crash. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just got back from 74.77 miles - not a whole lot of climbing (more like Gary's rides) BY FAR my longest ride ever! My whole body hurts... It was cool because the 4 of us stayed together the whole time, so I got to draft all the way - helps to be the weakest/smallest rider on the team ![]() Mav - I guess I don't hurt as much as you do - sorry about your crash, and I hope your feet heal quickly John - WTG on your race! |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got a finish line today too!! And it was 30 minutes faster than last year!! YAY!!! The wind was WICKED!!!! I didn't like that part but I would just tuck myself in behind someone. LOL It was very cold waiting to start. Such a fun race and John rocked it!! Way to go!! I actually thought the wind was going to carry me away on the walk back to the car! Diane...great ride!! Mav, hope your recovery sails by smoothly! Gary, glad you had a nice ride. LRR I am listening to you! ![]() |
