Mav, sorry about the crash, I worry about that alot.  It could have been worse, could have been a train coming! ( Weak attempt at humor).   Seriously, heal quick and keep us posted.

I did get a finish line today, but am not to proud of it.  Let me start by saying my first open water gulf swim didn't go as planned.  I did a practice swim yesterday evening and felt pretty good, thinking I can do this.  Probably 1 to 2 footers, no big deal.  This morning......................oh my God.  They called for 1 to 2 footers again, I'm going to have to call BS on that one.  After I got out 5 or 6 hundred yards, it was at least 4 footers with 5s mixed in.  I was totally screwed.  I only breathe on one side, guess which side.  Thats right the side the waves were crashing into my open mouth on.  I believe I could make it to the turn around point but I really didn't think I could make it all the way back in to the beach.  Now this pains me greatly, but, I had to call for assistance and a ride back to the beach.  Relay one was screwed.  I really feel bad for the team, but its not worth dying for is it.  I really didn't think I would make it.  Not looking for sympathy just answers.  Ok, answers now.

I was on another relay team as the runner.  My mind was totally messed up by the fiasco in the water but felt like I needed to give it my best shot.  Now the best way to heal is to get back in the saddle as quick as possible right?  I figured I would just smoke this run as revenge.  First 5 miles were great, maintained a 8 to  8:15 pace.  I was hydrating every chance I could, at least every mile and using my Infinit as well as gu.  Got to the turnaround point and BAM, huge headwind.  I figured I would slow down my pace and coast on in for my goal of 1:45 to 1:50, Not, ended up with 2:05.  I did pass probably 5 to 1 vs. getting passed but was very dissappointed with my overall day.  I stopped by Walmart on my way home and bought knitting needles, screw this triathlon crap!

Billy, wow tough day but let me start with a Nice Job on getting back in there and finishing the run.  2:05 after that swim and the wind is something to be proud of.  Having horses I do know the term "get back on the horse" quite well.

As for the swim, sounds like very tough conditions and while I can feel your pain you did the right thing.  Drowning is not a valid alternative.  Mav and group can speak about the swim but I grew up in So. Calif (45 min drive from Malibu), body surfing, surfing, etc and I can tell you that if you haven't trained in rough surf it can get nasty and dangerous (as a kid I was rescued by life guards once or twice, don't tell anyone!).  If you don't have that kind of environment to practice in it will be tough.  Obviously bi-lat breathing would be a big help.

Telling you not to beat yourself up about this is futile but keep it to a minimum.  Plan your next race and get back on that horse.  BTW, no way in f'ing he$$ I am going to let you give up on this Tri stuff.  HTFU and we can plan on swim in Lake Ponch in June.

Hey Billy, Sounds like a horrific swim. I have a friend who did this race and she said the swim was brutal. She usually finishes in the top of her AG. Dont beat yourself up over it. I am also a single side breather...although I can bilateral breathe as necessary. There are MANY very good swimmers on this site who have had similar experiences. Get back at it as soon as possible, and you will be fine.

Thanks for the Mothers Day wishes. I am going to watch a tri today that I was supposed to race. My husband is volunteering. I get to watch all my Mass BT peeps...not as good as racing...but I am OK with  it.

My daughter is taking my place tonite at a Yankees Red Sox game. Its just not fair!!!!!

My daughter is also moving home today....dont ask!!! She has a new apartment but cant get in right away.

Mav - Sorry about your crash!  I'm still nervous every time I think about railroad tracks.

I thought of all you IndyMini racers yesterday when it got so windy. I'll be there next year!

I'm enjoying breakfast in bed while watching the Rev3 Knoxville tri coverage live on the computer.  They're running 4 cameras, so I'm getting some ideas of how everything is organized for my Rev3 race in September.

Have a great Mother's Day everyone!

This is my first Mothers Day that I won't be spending with my kids... although I wouldn't have it any other way - I'm proud of both of my boys, and want them where they are, but I'm sad at the same time

Gonna go do 35 miles - 2 group rides to choose from... better get going or I'll miss them both

Mav, how are you feeling today?   I hope well.

Gary, back in the saddle.  Went to the Y with the sole purpose of learning to breathe on the left.  500 yards left side only, 500 yards bilateral breathing.  If you are in this group and are left handed, you have my respect.  Everything should be on the right, dangit!

I think I will pass on the knitting.  I went to knitting forum today and they old ladies aren't as cool as y'all.

Got to go, have an Ironman to train for.

Just for your information, I have repeated your statement over and over to myself and others many times.  You know, the one about being faster than someone on the couch.  I find it highly motivating.  Thanks.

Im OK. Saw the foot MD today and he took off the initial bandages. It felt great to get them off as they were quite bulky and it made it harder to walk.. He put more on but they are less bulky. I dont have much pain except when I try to walk. He said the neuromas were huge. I asked him if I will now be able to run sub 9 mm....he chuckled. He promises it will not hurt when I run. I can hardly wait!!!!

My real pain is in my shoulder. I see my PT guy tommorow...hopefully we can begin fixing this!!!!!

No training for me for another 2 4/7 weeks. I need help in the NOT eating department...especially when my "friends" send me Godiva chocolate!!!!! Its hard to do NOTHING!!!!!

Mav, over the years I have worked with some people who were fantastic at doing nothing.  I will track them down and send them your way!  Glad you are recoverying well.

Just kind of gliding along.  Week three of Jorge's bike plan, last nights session was a sweatfest but got it done.  Even thought its only week three those 1 minute all out intervals aren't hurting quite as much.  Hoping to swim at lunch and run tonight.

Todays run complete.  Ran in the heat in order to prevent what happened at Gulf Coast Tri from happening again.  3.4 miles. Will swim tonight, and post later.  I guess I will continue to post all by myself with the occasional zinger from Gary.

I do have one question though.  I s it possible that I drank to much during my run this weekend in Panama City.  could that be an issue during the run?

It is a love hate relationship.  I am getting better and will continue to get better because I intend to work on it until my oeft side is as good as my right side breathing, thanks for asking.  You will get to see it in action in Louisville.

By Louisville it will be natural for you!  When I started swimming (May 2009) I was a one sided breather too.  Then in June my brother and I did an ocean swim every morning while on vacation.  I found out real quick how important it was to be able to breathe on both sides.  So I started working on my bilateral breathing and now it just comes natural.  Just wish I could swim faster!!

I'm here, just coming out of the lazy post-marathon mode lol Hope to start speedwork tomorrow and jump back in the game, generally.

I now have a goal of a sub 5-hr marathon by Chicago (Oct 10), so I need to lose the weight in the worst way and get back into intensive training.

Gary, ahhaa!

Billy, I have the same issue wirth the bi-lat breathing. No problem with the pull buoy but without I am back to left sided breathing after the first 100. Getting better.

I got a finish line tonight.  Did a 5K race at a festival just down the street from me.  Still pretty tight from the 1/2 marathon but I couldn't resist a race so close to my house.
