Yes, concentrate on only one swim technique matter at a time. Two will be kinda sorta okay, but just one is best. Three or more? You'll only mess up all of them!

As for Yoga, (1) don't get competitive about it, and (2) stay within your edge. Those two are somewhat related, with the difference being that, for the first, you either look at the instructor or the others in the room and try to emulate everything they can do. Tghe second branches from the first in that even if you keep your focus on yourself, don't push beyond where you are about 98% comfortable --- and if you get in a "sticky" spot, back off to a safer place.

Do you know which "style" will be offered.....or is it just billed as "Yoga"? (If the latter, that is probably a good safe one.)

North? If you are looking to escape the Texas heat, you can always visit us for a while; lots of races within 50 miles of here!

Good schedule, though!

Mine will be.....well, I'm still working on it, so i will say no more for now. Probably, though, a sprint on Sunday the 26th. Odd course, done it a few times, will enjoy it as best I can. More later!

I've been keeping up here with everybody. Great job on all the races. Duncan good luck this weekend.

My running has taken a beating lately. I just feel worn out and seems like I've gotten slower. I'm not sure if I'm not sleeping enough (I'm not) or if I'm not eating enough. I'm haven't stepped on a scale since last year but I have ribs now at least I can feel them. Everything seems to be getting a little smaller, well except my thighs but they are pretty solid.

I think I'm going to try and get a good run in tomorrow do my first OWS in my wet suit over the weekend and try and get in a good bike ride over the weekend and start to tapper for next Sunday.

ELLEN -

YES!! It's very good! Remember, i was born and bred in Boston (well, 23 miles away), so I come by my love of Boston teams honestly. My father took me to scores of Red Sox and Bruins games, so that's where my hard-core heart lies. He was never much of a basketball fan, so I had to wheedle and cajole him to get him to take me to Celtics games. But I love them, too. And the Patriots weren't born until 1960, when I was 11, and I only went to one of their games, i think. But they are also fave-raves!

As for the Mavs, great for them too! When I taught just outside Dallas from '85-'87, one of my students had ready access to Mavs tickets and took a couple of us teachers to a few of their games. So, not only do I despise the Miami Heat, but I really like the Mavericks. Thatw as a win-win for me, when thye beat the Heat!

Did you see my post about neuromas? Does it fit for your condition? Lemme know! (Pretty please?)

And the Yoga comments -- useful, or useless?

Finally, how have you felt the past few days? Any lingering effects from E-man? And signs of DOMS?

Thanks for the well wishes and MOJO.

And sorry Steve, but Bruins winning sucks big time!  I was born in Vancouver, and have been a Canucks fan my whole life.  Yesterday brought back memories of 1994, when they also lost in the finals game 7... My poor Canucks have never won a cup!  There were over 100,000 people on the streets of Vancouver watching the game on big screens and cheering, they deserve the win!

However, Boston did play great, and Tim Thomas was amazing... Honestly, I was sitting in my office (games play at 8am here in Taiwan), watching the finals, and cursing Thomas' name over and over again.  Good work Bruins!

On a funny side note, did anyone notice the "Boston Pizza" (A restaurant chain in Canada, not sure if its in America or not)  sign in the Vancouver rink?  The Boston was crossed out and the sign read "Vancouver Pizza"... I had a good laugh over that!

Steve,

What you described as a neuroma sounds exactly like what I have.  I have the same feeling when I run for more than about 5 miles without the bike ride.  I guess I should go to a doctor before it progresses. Although it has been about the same for 2 years now.

As for the yoga post, it was wonderfully helpful.  Thank you.  I find the jargon really confusing so you cleared it up.  I have not done the Warrior DVD entirely. I did watch part of it and it seems to have a realistic tone as in I could do it.  I did not see any body holding a pose for 3-5 minutes.  I have time today to get started.  Then run tomorrow and bike on Sunday.

Unfortunately, I have no ill effects after Eagleman. I guess that means that I did not work very hard.  I felt pretty bad that day but I guess not bad enough.

Still looking for the perfect plan for Nation's.

Ellen

Happy Friday Everyone!

OK....just had a thought here at work this afternoon and wanted to run it by the group. My last race of the year is the Pinehurst Oly on 10/2/11....and my goal next year is to do a HIM (probably Augusta 70.3 in Sept...potentially).

Here is my thought process....I did a 1/2 Mary back in 2006 prior to getting into triathlons, so I know I can do one, BUT I thought it would be good to get another one under my belt prior to next year. Charlotte has a 1/2 Mary on 11/12/11 (6 weeks after my Oly). Am I crazy for even considering this or is that enough time to get trained up to be able to run a decent race (not looking to win the thing)?

I know from the Oly training, my long runs probably will be pushing 8 miles or so (Z1-2)...so I would think over the next 6 weeks I could just jump into a 1/2 Mary plan and finish it out (obviously with a little R&R after the Oly).

Thoughts?

Well, got my race packet for Sunday's Sprint... #131... it doesn't seem to be a large event, under 200 people I think.  Looking forward to it!  Who else is racing this weekend???

DUNCAN -

Oops! I think you missed all of the incredibly disturbing footage of the riot. I'm not sure the city really deserved a win afterall, as many hundreds were either doing the damage or cheering it on. The coverage it has received here is remarkable, and the national shame, about "just" the national game, is fully palpable.

I have to admot to wondering what in the world Vancouver was doing in getting so many people of the city streets. Even before the final game, some shopkeepers had boarded up theri windows, figuring that win or lose, all hell would break loose -- and it did. It is just amazing that no one was killed, although many people were badly beaten. Really awful.

BUT! Have a good -- make that GREAT! -- race, and post about it here when you can.

Palindrome numbers are good, and numbers that have a 13 imbedded in them are even better. You are SO fortuante to have #131!

Small is good, so enjoy that, too. And remember -- set your own pace on the swim, and select where you start according to what feels 100% right to you.

I don't really want to wait a couple of days for your report....but I guess that's what I've got to do for a Sunday race, huh? So much for Immediate Gratification!

Au contraire! One can emerge from a race with not lingering niggles and wonks because they successfully stayed within themselves --- and a credit to them for doing so! I have had many successful races in which I am sure I have pushed hard enough....but not so hard as to compromise muscles and ligaments and tendons and fascia. At the good-results races I have had which rendered me halt and lame for a while, those have not made me feel too good at all -- like I had done something dumb during the race, or maybe not trained properly for it. I could regale you with a tale about that from my half-iron last season.....but I will spare you that story!

As for Yoga and holding poses for a long time, that's really just Yin. The more conventional styles, such as Hatha and Ashtanga, gte you in and out of poses fairly quickly, and many classes that have "Vinyasa" in the name will have you "flowing" through poses at a brisk pace.

Urp. Sorry to hear I was right about the neuroma. But if knowledge is power.....there you go! Even though I eventually had mine surgically removed, don't get all worried that that might be in your future, too. There are several modalities to help you work though a neuroma, and one of them might solve most of your problems. PLEASE keep me posted about yours at it evolves, and probably a doc visit is a good idea. A podiatrist would be even better, if you have someone you trust. But if anyone mentions orthotics, let me know first -- especially if it is the podiatrist!

As for that perfect plan for Nations.......are you looking in my direction for that, or do you have other sources? Lemme know!

Not crazy at all, and not even a little bit whacko. In fact, it is a great plan, almost perfectly timed. I think you have done the math parts correctly, both in terms of time between the H-M, and the distances you will do for Pinehurst and how they will meld into the distances required for the H-M.

How important is Pinehurst for you? If it's "A"-priority, you can still do the H-M just fine, but might have to add some more quality miles post-Pinehurst. That is, if Piney is an "A", you might not really want to go much beyond 7 miles in prep for it, choosing instead to work at speed over those 6.2 miles. Piney will also require some dedicated brickwork, as it is not the easiest of Olympic-distance bikes (and it's a few miles overlong on the bike, isn't it, which is why I think they cal it an International?).

If Piney is a "B", though, and the H-M is an "A", then you almost might want to "train through" Piney; that is, use it as a training day to get you used to working hard for a few hours. Nothing wrong with that approach....but I kinda hope you make Pinehurst an important race, and then take those ample six weeks to gear up for the H-M.

Finally, as for getting another H-M behind you in prep for Augusta, that is just a wisely wise thing to do. I support such thinking 100%

Augusta ---- very fun swim, with current; nice bike, with as I remember a lengthy downhillish return; flat run, but boring and subject to mucho sun. But 2 out of 3 as plusses is a good situation to be in!

SHANNEN -

Is it a race you have this weekend? There isn't one showing on your list of races; you sneaking one past us?

As for not getting any faster....give it ample time. Think plateaus, about which many of us sit for seemingly way too long. Think gestation period, which means for some of us it is seemingly elephant-length as we wait to birth a significant improvement in our performance.

I have perched on many a plateau.....and am STILL waiting to birth a meaningful bump in my swim times. The plateau concept is one of the items that falls under the category of training and race results not being linear, meaning that we cannot realistically expect our results to mirror our wishes and our hopes and even our dedication to training; it just doesn't work that way.

BUT! Improvements will happen, and hopefully for you at this point ----- sooner than later!

CRAIG -

Sounds like overtraining to me, which I mentioned to Jeff a few days ago. You have been hard at it for quite a while in prep for Pacific Crest, and it is good that that race is just a week away so you can finally get rewarded for the work you've done. Can't come soon enough, eh?

Feeling worn out, and with decreased performance, are too looming indictaors of overtraining. (The third is disinterest in training; does that apply to you as well?) It'll help you now to take some down time....although keep to your biking and swimming plans for the weekend.

As for the run......well, I guess that happened because I missed your post until just now! So, how did it go? If it was pretty good, or better than that, then you can probably do one or two more runs before Pacific Crest. if it was another exercise in frustration and/or lethargy, then you would be best served to just back off running until the race. Realistically, whatever you do between now and then won't add hardly an iota to your perfomance, as all the hard and focused work has been done.

Keep me posted as to how your psyche is doing, okay?

Had my 1st Yoga class last night and it was great.  It felt good doing the long stretches.  After training for 6 months and not really doing any long stretches, it felt good on the muscles.  Only problem was I was not able to just relax since I was having to look around and see what everyone was doing because I did not understand yoga talk.  I guess after a few classes I will pick up the new language and get to fully relax.

David - It looks like we are heading down the same path.  I also plan to run a half mary in November and then Im stongly looking at doing the Augusta 70.3 next year.
