CRAIG -

Probably needless to say, but I'm sorry all of this has befallen you and your family. It's a lot to deal with, and you're right -- a race might just take second/third/fourth place.

That said, if it does happen for you, here are a couple of things on dealing with he wetsuit throwing off your mechanics. I'm mentioning this now just in case the breathing room you (may) have now, disappears over the next few days.

(1) In thicker wetsuits, my kick really messes things up. If this is the case for you, minimize your kick as much as you can --even to the point of allowing your feet to trail along behind you.
(2) If your basic body roll is thrown off, then don't expend much effort in trying to establish it and maintain it. In effect, then, allow the wetsuit to control your body roll; accept whatever roll there is with the westuit, even id it seems less than when you swim sans suit.

Finally, as for the infection, remember the rule -- wokrouts are generally okay if whatever ails you is from the neck up. If it's below there, though, it is far, far better to rest and not run the risk of aggravating things. Races change that a bit, especially for ones that are truly important -- "A"-priority races, mostly.

I hope things clear for you on all fronts as soon as possible. My best thoughts to you and Kathy.

Yay! The wait is over! I'll bet you're actually very anxious for next Monday to come, just to make it all official. Congratulations, and may it be a good fit for you!

As for Superfrog.........a half-iron as a first triathlon is not sopmehting to take too lightly. Having the people to train with will help gte you physically prepared, but I just generally feel that there is so much to be learned at each stage of the race process before embarking on the substantial demands of a half-iron. Smart pacing is the biggie --- unless, of course, nailing dwon nutrition is a bigger biggie. Sure, you can take stabs at it and hope like crazy that it all works just fine on race day.....but that's kind of like buying lottery tickets.

Are there maybe two sprints and an oly between now and Superfrog?

Beyond that, the knee issue is a real concern. Unless that is pretty much fully resolved between now and real soon when you need to begin serious training for a HIM that is about 11 weeks away, you run a real risk of having it flare up often as you ramp up the mileage. How much does it get in the way of your running now?

Did you see my post from yesterday, and does it accurately put your performance in a more positive light? I looked at the full race results again, and I interpret it the same as I did yesterday. Good performance from you phyically, and a massively good performance in a karmic sense!

Any chance your work will allow running shoes while you're recovering from this? That might be a better option than scouting around for new dress shoes, yes?

I switched to my old running shoes that I keep in my office for my lunch runs and it helped. As soon as I switched back the pain worsened. So I will wear different shoes. I can get away with it. Eventually I will have to go to a meeting or court (we get subpoenas periodontally) or something and need dress shoes again.

Well, the race is complete and I am sort of recovered.

Don't yet have splits and didn't get my watch working correctly so have no idea what my times were. And I guess I really don't care too much about the times.. just completing each leg was good enough for now.

The swim was a challenge, I still can't swim straight, and I swallow way too much air (and salt water for that matter).  It was an 800 yrd swim but I probably same at least 900 yrds... didn't line up well and drifted a lot.  Steve - need to work on that Popeye breathing.  It was also a deep water start, something I had never heard of. but we "swam/wadded" out to the start buoy and started from there.  Very strange...  The shortness of breath that I experienced in my first swim happened again, I am going to try and get in some open water swim practice versus just racing in it maybe that will help.

I wasn't the last one out of the water but pretty close.  Sliced up my foot in the swim on some rocks coming in and didn't even realize it until after the run (thought I was getting a blister)

T1 was very slow, couldn't get out of my wetsuit and then couldn't get my jersey on...

The bike was going really well, then I came across this guy who had a flat, as I am going by asked if he had everything he needed, he said yes but had no clue how to use any of it.  He had a really nice Cervelo bike... He had the rear tire off, totally removed the tire skewer (luckily we found the one spring that had fallen off), had the whole tire off the rim and the old tube out but was dumbfounded as to what to do ....  So 15 min later we were both off back on the road.  I think that I am just too nice to do this whole "racing" thing... need to be more ruthless  Laughing (like that is really going to happen)
Anyway, I got going again and passed around 5 people before the transition area (only slightly kicking myself because I had already passed these people and feel like I would have caught more)

T2 was better, but I started the run with my legs feeling slightly like rubber...

The run was ok, I probably walked half of it, which I was expecting since I haven't been able to run much at all with my knee.  I think the clock said my overall time was 2:11 but will wait for the official times to know for sure.

And... I was the last finisher... really bummed about that but someone has to be last right?!?

I'll post my times when I get them... Hope everyone else had a good race!

Alex

Congratulations on a successful race and finish!

Results posted, so I finished up my race report.

I finished 150th outta 280 in my age group.  Not too shabby.

ckallpoints - 2011-06-19 11:21 AM Well I did my first OWS with my wetsuit on Saturday and it was the absolute worst swim I have ever had. I couldn't get into any kind of rhythm couldn't seem to breath  my chest felt constricted it was terrible. It was nice the people I went with were trainers and do the rescue for the swim at the race I'm doing. This has really gotten in my head and I'm doubting my ability. We'll see how it goes.

It just takes a few swims to get used to it, hang in there.

Well here are the ugly numbers... 157/157

start time  6:45:18

swim rank 133 swim time 20:46

t1 rank 148 t1 time 3:34

bike rank  152 bike time 57:01

t2 rank 115 t2 time 1:20

run rank 156 run time 42:55

Overall time 2:05:34

You get big bonus points for helping fix a flat, and most importantly you did not get a DNF.

stevebradley - 2011-06-08 5:09 PM DANIEL - Outer edge of the actual kneecap? Don't know about that, but if it's on the outside of your leg adjacent to the kneecap, that would be the illiotibial band. Any chance it's ITB area?

I do have tight ITBS (both sides) but this pain is on the outside of the knee cap.

In other news: 1) I am no longer unemployed!! I start this new job on Monday the 27th. 2) I am now contemplating the SUPERFROG HIM tri on 9/11  It is a nice flat course  I think it will be a good first tri, I have a crew of about 7-15 people to train with for support.

Congratulations on the new job, what will you be doing?

ckallpoints - 2011-06-20 1:23 PM Well my wife's step father passed today. I'm not sure how this will affect this weekend. I may not be racing but that's a minor thing right now.

Sorry to hear about your father-in-law.  There will be lots of other races.

DUNCAN -

Not too shabby at all!! It is amazing that there were so many in the age group; those numbers are along the lines of an Ironman race, where there are usually about 2100-2400 starters. I tried to go to your report, but was told that Internet Exporer could not display it. Bah. (This is likely the fault of our dial-up system, and it will be fine for that site later.) I was wondering if those numbers reflect the race using 10-year age groups (i.e., 60-69, rather than 60-64), which would help explain so many in your a.g.

Regardless! Being 150/280 in your first tri is terrific!

(What's next for you?)

STEVE, just getting around to reading everything and trying to absorb as much as possible from everyone experiences.  I feel good about the race as a whole.  It was a lot of fun and even with finishing last I finished and that was what was most important to me.  I also have numbers now that I can build on.  I think that makes everything good since up until this race I didn't really have a good sense as to where my race fitness was.  I need to ramp up my swim and run training and keep some bike training in there.  I talked to my physical therapist about running with my knee, she has suggested that I use the elliptical trainer for now and only run on flat tracks if possible when I do run.

My foot is a bit bothersome in that the gash isn't closing well, I may take a quick trip to my doctor just to have her look at it since it is in a bad place to close up and heal ( I think every step I take causes it to open up

I have 3 weeks until my next sprint in July so hopefully I can get in some OWS and get in some consistent training.

CRAIG - sorry to hear about your family's loss.

Thanks!

Alex

There were 1600 in total.  280 in my age group (M30~34) only reflects finishers too... I guess I should go back to the registration and check out the number of starters.

Next?  Well, Summer in Taiwan is kind of an off season for triathlon, just too damn hot!  From what I understand there is another race close to where this last one was held (Also in Ilan county, which is about 90 ~ 120 minutes north east of me) in September.  Then one down south in October.  I'm kinda dreaming of doing both, but with family commitments, and for financial reasons I may have to pick just one.  Then thinking about maybe doing a HM in December.

Congratulations to all you Triathletes for a job well done in your races this past weekend!

Daniel~ Congrats on the new job!!!
Craig~ Sorry for your loss!

I did better in my swim compared to 2 weeks ago, my biggest issue was staying on course... I need to practice my sighting, I don't have to do too much of this in the pool!!! Not a whole lot of places close by to do OWS so I will have to practice this in the pool I guess!!!
I was ok with my times although they don't have them correct on the race results my swim time is combined with my T1 time so my T1 time is like 9 mins and my T2 time is like 30 some min (combined with my bike time) I was happy with my run time but have been having trouble with my back when I get off the bike so it takes about the first 1/2 mile of the run to loosen up and be able to stand up straight and since my run is only 2 miles it doesn't give me much time to make up for the slowness at the begining. So over all I was 41 out of 128 and 1 out of 17 in my age group.

Steve~ This was a race in my series.... There are not many additional races I can add in as I am not comfortable enough with the swim to do longer or deeper water swims! My taining time is a big issue with me "not going any faster" I just think with the minimal amount of time I have I should be able to just go fast, and I want to have the times I had 10 years ago when I had all the time in the world to run (no kids, no husband, I was younger, not training for 3 disciplines!!!)

Happy training everyone!! Keep up the awesome work!!!

You have no idea how bad I want it to be Monday already.

It turns out Superfrog is going to be right at the peak of my marathon training therefore I will have to pass on it this year.  But on a lighter note I have decided to take on the challenge of the XTERRA Trail Run SoCal Series.  It is 7 races all over SoCal ranging from 9-15 miles in length.  This seems to be the year of running for me for one reason or another.  I have also softly commited to the Leona Divide trail run now I have to decide if I want to do the 30K or 50K.

The knee does not seem to bother me too much as long as I don't push too hard on my cross training activities.  The hard part for me is to not push too hard on the cycling workouts because I absolutely love the sport and I only partake in it once a week however I am learning to love running just as well.

It did seem a little quiet!

Steve, I went to Hatha Yoga today. Great workout and really good stretching. I'm going to try to get one or two classes a week.

I also took a Chi Running clinic last weekend to work on my running form. It was very interesting and I think it's going to help my body hold up through training. Today was the 3rd day I ran working on the new form and I was faster then normal so that was good!

Anyone racing this weekend?

Good Morning Everyone,

I hope everyone is going great.  I have been kinda down this week due to a back injury which stopped me from doing any training Mon-Thurs.  Feeling better today.  Did a group ride with Team in Training this morning which was a slow and easy ride.  We had a girl that just purchased a road bike and really hasnt been riding bikes before.  We did 15.5 miles in 1hr 8min which avg about 13.? mph.  She did good on her first ride and it was fun.  Doing another ride tomorrow morning with a different group so I hope the pace kicks up.  Well if anyone is racing this weekend then I wish you good luck.  I hope everyone has a great day and weekend.

Daniel - Congrats on the new job, I bet that is a lot off your shoulder now. Congrats

Craig - Sorry to hear about your father-inlaw.  Your family will be in my prayers.

Well I'm going to be on the water in a kayak on Saturday helping the water safety crew for the HIM race. Kathy and I will get up early 4:30 and head up to be there by 8, the race starts at 9.

I'm still not feeling great. I'm planing on trying to get a short swim in tomorrow after the racers are gone and see how I feel. I'm going to try and race Sunday. Water temp is about 60* so that's not too bad. the High Sunday is supposed to be 70*, nice running weather.

JOHANNE -

Good on the Chi Running! Just be careful of ANY aches in your calves, which can lead you down a long road of woe if your don't back off if they start hurting. Once they get strong it's great, though, as they absorb most of the shock, thus removing it from the knees and hips. Are your calves doing okay so far?

last week was ELEVEN Yoga classes, this week it's eight and counting. Most of mine end up being Hatha, but I am developing a strong interest in Astanga. It is kind of out of my league, mostly, but I'm entranced by it -- kind of like being lured to the rocks by The Sirens?
I have done 4 of 5 weeks of an Intro to Ashtanga class, and am learning a lot; that was definitely the way to go for me, and if another is offered soon I will maybe do it again!

I'm racing this weekend, a sprint that I am having a real hard time getting psyched for. So, we shall see what we shall see. Details on it later.
