Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JOHANNE again - Might as well be now: Smiths Falls Triathlon (500m - 26km - 5km) The swim is below a dam, and has the current at your back for the first ~400m before a 178-degree back into the current to the finish area. The bike is pretty nice, a single loop with no real hills, but often howling winds. The run is tedious. The call it a "figure eight", but it's far, far more convoluted than that. And this year there is bridge construction, so the run will be even more bizarre -- and maybe only 4.8km. Bah. Looooong run from water to transition. Bah again. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GEORGE - Well, that explains why you hadn't posted for a few days. When I got reconnected and all, I wondered what had happened to you; you're usually here, right as rain! Where was your back bothering you? I'm glad it made it through the easy ride, and hopefully it will behave on your ride this morning. More times than not, when my back gets sore an easy swim improves things. I like to think it's because of the mostly-gentle vertical stretching/lengthening that happens while I swim, as opposed to many more compressive activities; sitting comes to mind. When I do my gentle back-therapy swims, I concentrate on very long, langorous strokes -- very much as Total Immersion preaches. That is, a lot of focused extention of the lead arm, emphasis on "catch-up", balanced rotation, reduced stroke count; seems to help me! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() CRAIG - You and Alex both -- GREAT that you help out at races! From your perch in the kayak, you might get some good views of people working the water in their wetsuits; I hope that helps you. By the by, did you see the post I made to you a few days ago, about reducing your kick and minimizing your roll while in the wetsuit? I hope that helps, too! I agree with 70 as being very fine running temps, but as for 60 and swimming -- a bit chilly for my long bones! If it's 60-ish, though, here's some new advice: GET IN THE WATER EARLIER THAN YOU NEED TO!! I know, I know, that doesn't seem to make sense, but on an immediate level you will avoid the shock that comes from starting the swim with a completely warm body, as well as avoiding "ice-cream headache" (which you will have gotten out of the way by getting in the water earlier). On a physiological (?) level, getting in early will allow the water to get between you and the wetsuit, thus warming to your body's temp and adding that insulative later. Yes, that will happen eventually even if you don't get in before the horn blows, but I guess this comes back to the previous paragraph -- just a leg-up on acclimatizing. If you're not back until tomorrow evening, post-race, have a good one!! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SHANNEN - Hi! Have fun watching your other half race. Maybe if you're lucky, it'll be hot and humid and windy and over-crowded.....and you'll be grateful to be on the sidelines, rested and comfortable! West Virginia, here you come? Why, and for how long? Is this where the race is, or a vacation destination? |

Which one is it, anyhow? Hey Steve, it is the Stamford KIC IT Triathlon it is an Oly so I didn't want to race, not ready to swim a mile let alone run a 10K... maybe next year... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got in an open water swim practice this morning. it was awesome, but a little freaky in that we had a foggy morning and in the lake once we were about half way to the other shore we couldn't see where we were at all... so we just sort of said, ok we see that tree line... lets head that direction... I think we swam about a mile, luckily the fog burned off enough that we were able to swim back to the dock rather than having to walk barefoot around the lake... I hope to get out there again next saturday. it really was amazing. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ALEX - That DOES sound like a very nifty swim. I can see the elements of freakiness in it, and I have had a few pea-soup swims in which I wasn't sure where I would end up finding myself, but in small doses those foggy ones are very fine; ethereal, almost. Your comment about walking barefoot around a lake reminds me of why I dislike boats and try to avoid them like the plague. My best childhood friend had a cottage on a small-medium lake in New Hampshire, and they owned a rowboat and a motorboat. On more than a few occasions, the engine would die on the motorboat, or an oarlock would break on the rowboat, or a horrific thunderstorm would blow in while we were at the other end of the lake....and we'd have to haul the boat back to his cottage, by hand, stumbling over rocks and fighting through lake-hugging vegetation. I hate boats. I will swim absolutely anywhere and under most conditions, but bopats are terrible -- the devil's chariots, I think. Plus, on boats out in the ocean (say, whale-watching, or for marine biology sample-collecting) I am very prone to motion sickness. Bah. A pox on boats!!! ANYHOW, that's very cool that you are psyched for more OWS, but beware -- they can be habit-forming!! ![]() Edited by stevebradley 2011-06-27 9:03 PM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve - Yep last week I was MIA for a while. I went through a down time with not being able to train. As for the back I was working with AT&T last year install their Uverse (Their version of Cable TV). I was in a customers attic when I stepped on some plywood and it turned out to be that pressed partical board, well lets just say I was not standing on it long, I went through it and on my way down out of the attic I threw myself backwards to avoid going all the way down. I ended up out of work for 4 weeks and doing Physical therapy. While I was out I realized I was to old to be doing that type of work it also took me away from my family. I was working 60+ hours a week so when I was not working I was resting so no time with the family. So while I was trying to get better I was also looking fo a new job where I'm at now which is a desk job Mon-Fri 8-5 so I get to spend time with the family now. Well the back never totally got better, every once it a while it will lock up on me like it did this past week. Monday I woke up to go riding at 3am and it took me 20minutes to get out of bed. The back get so bad that it's even painfull to walk, sit or do anything. It usually last about 4 days and goes away. The ride on Saturday was even slower than the Friday ride, I guess Im to nice to leave someone behind. I was riding with this group for the 1st time, it was about 6 guys and 2 ladies. The ride required us to go through this not so good part of town and on the way back everyone was taking off and I was riding in the back of the group, well the lady that was in front of me started to get slower and slower and before you know it the group was gone. Well i cold not pass her and leave her alone so I rode with her on the way back at about 14mph. I think I might stick to riding in a group once or twice a month and continue to train solo. I hope everyone had a great weekend and has a great day |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Craig, Congratulations on your tri. George, Sorry you are still suffering from the accident. It sounds like you made a nice trancsition with your job though. I have not forgotten about the picture. I'm waiting for one where I don't look like I am about to die, and the wetsuit ones are out of the question and the bike pictures are not much better, neither are the run ones, come to think of it. It may take a while. I have been biking with a group around Frederick County. Turns out there are a lot of nice untravelled roads. It seems that everyone is faster than me (it should be "I" but that sounds so affected) but that is good. Apparently this group does intervals periodically. One said "go first" to a guy on the ride and he took off. She said it was only a mile but it felt like 10. The prblem is that when I arrive they are? all rested and raring to go. It was fun though. I will probably go back again next week. That is how I will get better..right? ?I lost my computer and we circled back to find it but it had been run over by then. So I got another one that was less expensive but it does not do altitude or percent grade. Heck , I did not know the old one did that so I guess I will be ok. I know when I am going up a hill anyway. I don't need a little electronic thing to tell me that. I can tell by my instinct to call 911. Riding with a slower group tonight. These are the people that nearly killed me on Memorial Day. But he promises 15 miles per hour so I think I can handle it. We'll see. Ellen

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() George Sorry to here about your back I can total sympathize. I have had my bouts with my back and there are times when it just hurts regardless. Can't sit, can't stand, can't lay down they all hurt. I hope you're feeling better. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GEORGE - Alex's good karma must be contagious! She sacrificed a good chunk of her race to help someone, and you did similarly with your ride. Well, what goes around comes around, and at some point on some ride you will need some help or support....and someone will be there for you.. Exhibit C would be Ellen's stories about guys on her group rides being kind and generous towards her. I think this is what Buddhists call Bodhicitta, with a more common term being karma. (Better check that later!) |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GEORGE again - Just curious....are you doing any physiotherapy for the back? That's a harrowing story, and I suppose you know full well you came out a whole lot better than you could have. Mercy! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() CRAIG - Big congratulations on doing the race, period! About this time last week I was sure you wouldn't, and you certainly had every reason in the world to give it a pass. It really is pretty remarkable that you defied the infection AND managed to survive doing an oly at altitude. You're one tough cat, Craig! I'm really pleased for you that the swim was successful, and you now see a path towards better and better wetsuit swims. You're 100% right that practice will help, and within a few swims you should have a really good idea of how the wetsuit affects your technique. I have owned about ten of 'em over the years, and each has its own "personaility", as manifested by the way they restructure my mechanics. I don't remember if I said this to you last week, but the biggest culprits are those with more neoprene in the rump and thighs, with second-place going to those with thicker rubber at the chest. You're right, too, about how many people do not freestyle their way through an entire swim. I've never assisted on the water during a race, but just from being in so many of them I know how many people resort to breatstroke at least part of the time. This is perfectly acceptable, of course, and it's every bit as valid a stroke as freestyle. (And for that matter, so are back and side.) in fact, at my race a few weeks ago there was a guy who was breast-stroking at the same pace I was freestyling. Heck -- if you've got that perfect breaststroke kick, might as well race with it! You did a really good job conquering the head games and finishing the race. I'm not necessarily recommending the following approach to you, but for me I do well my turning the frustartions into anger. That happened last year at West Point when I flatted about two miles into the bike and lost about ten minutes changing the thing, and the anger manifested itself in a furious ride and a to-hell-and-back run. It wasn't fun -- at all!! -- but it got the job done. And two weeks ago a disappointing swim put my in the mindset to hold no prisoners on the bike....and then hang on fro dear life on the run because I hadn't marshalled my resources too wisely. ![]() ANYHOW, some degree of anger works for me, I guess by turning what I'm suffering internally into something completely external. Or something like that? As for the blister......... Yes to the likelihood of not-well-broken-in shoes, and yes too to the likelihood of wet socks contributing -- majorly! -- to the blister. Are your running socks cotton, maybe? If so, look for something synthetic. Cotton socks do a great job of absorbing sweat and any liquid, and wick away virtually none of it. And then that softens you feet, and voila! A blister (or two, or three, or....)! Nice touch by the rsace, having spray bottles. And when you say "glucose", are you referring to whatever flavored energy drink they provided? At any rate, you did a great job of fueling, using each aid station to its fullest. So, how's the body today? Any residual aches and pains, or are you mostly okay? Remember to give yourself several days off workouts entirely, and then for the rest of the week do easy stuff -- all at "recovery" pace, which just means super-comfortable! Now! What's next?!? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ELLEN - I agree! Sometimes those electronic gizmos make us seem like we just fell off the apple cart, which is mostly why I don't use anything beyond a watch with various simple timing devices. I went through a couple of years with one that gave me Too Much Information, and while I dutifully recorded it all in my log ----- it meant nothing to me beyond about 15 hours after the workout. That said, i am sorry yours was squished. Myabe the bartery was close to dead in it anyhow, or even better -- maybe there was a small crack that had formned in it, and water had seeped in, and within a day or two it would've died due to oversaturation! See? You trouble-shot! Seriously, though, yes -- you will get better riding with people who are better than you are. You have everything to gain, and as long as you can hold with them (mostly) and enjoy the rides, you will become that much stronger. I have some vague recollection of the Memorial Day story, and I will go back there to refresh my memory. I hope it went less dramatically for you tonight! And oops! I still haven't looked at your new training plan; I will try to do that very soon. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good Morning Everyone, Ellen - You are to funny, I do have to agree with you, I dont need a computer to see that monster hill in front of me. As for the picture I do understand, because I have a wife that has to approve any photos of her before I can post on facebook. Steve - I went through about 5 week of Physical Therapy after the accident, but have not done anything since. It's been 1 year since I hurt my back and it has acted up twice which usually last about 4-5 days. When I did do physical therapy it was just stretching and light weight back exercise. What I plan to do is still with the Yoga for the stretching and start to do the weights at home. Before when it acted up, It didn't bother me much (Mentally) because I would love to just sit around and rest, but since I started training for tri's it hits me mentally when I have to stop training for several days. Well off for a swim, I hope everyone has a great day. |

Steve, I don't think the socks I was wearing were cotton but I could be wrong I bought them when I got my shoes and told the sales person I didn't want cotton. They are short on my foot and that might explain the sores on the back of my foot. The seam or top of the sock is right where the blisters are there. The other one I'll have to see if I can figure that one out. The Glucose (that's what they called it) was a clear sweet electrolyte drink not too much flavor really. I was just happy to drink something and keep moving. As far as residual aches and pains go, I'm a little sore from my triceps across my shoulders and my quads. My calve are the tightest and fortunately I'm wearing flip flops to work I'm not sure what race I'll do next but I think it will be a sprint later this summer. I may go volunteer at a race on July 9 doing the same thing we did on Saturday. Here are a few shots from Saturday. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I read our posts everyday but I don't always add mine! George, how is your back feeling? Daniel, did you start the new job? How's it going? Steve, my calves are ok so far with the Chi running. Overall, I feel good. It just takes a lot of concentration to use my core more and stay focused. I'm looking forward to some muscle memory! I have a 90 min run today so I'll let you know if I survive that! Your swim of your tri sounds like mine in reverse. My first half will be into the current and then I get a little help coming back Shannen, with having older kids, my husband usually races when I do (except for my upcoming HIM, he has no interest in that distance mostly because of time constraints for training) so I don't get to watch very often. Sounds fun. Craig, great job on your race! The kayaking looked fun too. Glad you took your camera. I'm a little over 2 weeks away from my first HIM. My training starts slowing down next week and I'm ready. I'm tired! Anyone have any fun plans for the 4th of July weekend? It's my birthday and I asked Dave for an outdoor aviary. My Dad and I have been building it. It'll be fun when it's done. Right now it's just a lot of work! I'm going to put a few finches and canaries in it to start and see how it goes. Have a great weekend! Johanne |
