Oh, on my  long ride this weekend, I practiced staying in aero at 50+ mph.  It was a bit unnerving at first but so much fun.  So it looks like the Keene descent will be done in aero all the way.

I figure if my Blue can track through sweeping turns at 50+, it shouldnt' be a problem come training camp.

I think it's complete rush to ride aero down the Keene descent.  However it was a totally different story when there were tons of other cyclists around in the race.  I trusted myself, I did not trust everyone else out there.  Just something to be aware of that it's different on race day than even at training camp days.  But then again, you're getting out of the water sub 1 hour on my toes, so you'll be there before the majority.

You'll be fine.  It's not that steep, it's just a long descent.  But as Fred said, absolutely stay to the right.   Very easy to forget people are going to be coming down fast trying to pass.

The real issue is with fast swimmers who are not confident cyclists. Many of them come out of the water in 55-65 min, and then the fast cyclists pass them on the keene decent.

Be smart, be careful

I am working on correcting that problem for myself.

Well, my goal is to come off the bike between 5:15 - 5:30, so that means 20-21 mph average.

We will see how that goes after the training camp in a couple of weeks.

Dan you ride alot of hills in GA?

Lucky for me I am fairly slow all around so I fully expect the speedsters will be way ahead by the time I get to Keene....Nevertheless brake pads need to be replaced before the race as I do anticipate some degree of feathering on the way down...particularly if it is raining. "Be smart, be careful" is good advice for this first-timer.

Staying to the right is the way to go if you will be doing VERY slow.  BUT, if you are carnying ANY type of speed, being to the right will be dangerous. There are lots more bumps and heaves on the side than the middle of the lane. FAR LEFT is for the really fast and nuts.  I absolutely wouldn't go far right if I was over 25-30 mph in a few spots, especially a few of the right hand turns, but if you are in the 30's - 40's the middle will be safer.  As everyone said, there will be some REALLY fast people who should be as far left as they can get.

Also, use your judgement, if you are being constantly zipped by, then get farther right.  However, while I stay out of the fast people's way, and staying in on my line and not swerving, the person overtaking is responsible for not hitting the person in front.  If someone clipped me from behind, and I was going straight, I'd be pissed!  It IS race and accidents happen, but safety should be first.

I was just there this weekend and some of the roads are in pretty bad condition, but if you stay just to the left of the white line you're safe in most parts of the descent without having to get too far left and in the path of faster cyclists. There were only a couple stretches where even that part was chewed up, but you could just apply the breaks a bit and coast over. I hope people don't panic and swerve. I did a race in the rain where people were swerving to miss puddles, it creates such a dangerous situation for other riders.

I agree with pennstate. I have done L.P. the past 2 years and will be toeing the line again this year. If you are nervous about the descents stay as far right as possible. The hills are long and steep where most athletes will be going 40 mph or faster. If you stay in the middle you will risk getting clipped by the faster athletes who do not see you in time. just my .02

I rode the LP course today for the first time, I am by no means anywhere close to being as good a rider as some here, but I went down the hill to Keene at 38-40 mph and I was scared Sh...less. It was raining rather hard, but with traffic and staying as far right as I could, the road was not good in more than a few spots. I guess on race day, more of the "good road" will be available, but I'll still stay out of the way of you 50+ mph guys. No way am I going that fast. Just a beginners point of view.

You see, this is where attitude is everything.  Let's change "I went down the hill to Keene at 38-40 mph and I was scared Sh...less" to "I went down the hill to Keene at 38-40 mph and it was so badazzzzzz!"

It's the same thing with the swim.  It's insane.  You've never experienced a mass start that is such a massive human blender.  IT'S AWESOME!!!!!  I will have the hot pink pedicured toes and be loving every second of the mayhem.  And the Keene descent is my second favorite part.  So basically once I'm at mile 14 on the bike, my fun is over and I'm basically ready for my post race beer.  Or actually, tonight I told Jorge this year we're doing shots b/c if I make it on this pathetically weak training I deserve way more than beer.

Oh yeah, I'm going sub 13 this year too.  On no training, I'm having a 69 minute PR.  And I can't wait.  SEE YA AT THE SWIM START PEEPS!!!

Nope, but I rode the course 2 weeks ago and got an idea for the roads.  I try to lookout for my own safety first, and as a slowpoke, I know where I want to be on the roads. I won't get in anyones way - and heck I'm a slow enough swimmer, most of the qualifiers will be at the bottom WAY before I get there.

Note: if anyone who HAS done it before thinks I'm 100% wrong, please let me know. I'm not advocating being in the middle of the road or riding the yellow line, but staying off the sholder where it can get a little ugly.

Ok, I made my last post before I 100% caught up.

- I absolutely agree that  the slower people do need to be aware that the faster people will be coming, especially if you are a faster swimmer than many. That being said, you want to stay as far right as comfortable.  After riding the course, - I think I topped out at 43 on open roads, and might be a little faster on closed roads, I felt that I would not feel safe or comfortable riding the white line on almost the entire decent, even in some of the places where you have a dip before the big hills, it is a little sketchy. At 25-35 mph, it is probably fine to be fairly close to the side, but there are some spots that were not great and much above that, I wouldn't want to be there.

That is not to say that if I am getting blown by or there is a lot of traffic I wouldn't move over if I could.  Yes, it is hard for people going 50+ to see people going slower, but that doesn't mean they would be blameless, neither would the slowpoke weaving back and forth.  However, I believe that my riding where I am comfortable at a reasonable pace- reasonable being relative to the road conditions - I would expect that those who have the ability to overtake me also use some common scene when they do.

I don't 100% disagree with others, but I don't 100% agree either.  I've seen far too many people go for speed over safety and while it is a race, I try to race safe as well, and would hope that others would.  If I was riding faster than you and taking cutting the apex of a corner and hit a slower person who was riding on the right side, it would be my fault if I didn't try to avoid him.  Accidents do happen, and we should all try to avoid them, even at the loss of speed and time.

Of course, I'm the guy who stopped during both his HIM legs to share a tube and CO2.

I think it was LazyMarathoner who said just to the left of the line on the right side of the road.  Not saying slower rides need to ride in potholes, but as far right as you can possibly get for smooth road.  And that's definitely not the center of the road.  No cyclists are riding in the center of the roads right now while the roads are open.

Main difference is it is just so different when there are hundreds/thousands of people on race day.  I know a lot of cyclists are up there right now training, but it is nothing like it is trying to go down Keene with hundreds of people around you.  I love the Keene descent and it is the ONLY section of bike I will ever pass anyone, but the second I pass I get right back over to the right as far as I can.  It's not worth MY own safety not to.  A choppy road is honestly way safer than riding slower in the middle of the road with a greater potential for a huge crash.  Just my two cents.

Tell you what just leave me 2 1/2 ft of road between you and the yellow line and I'll be good.

Yes I descend at 50+ mph on Keen in aero and non-aero.

Perhaps if we all understanding the USAT rules this will help.  Attention to 5.5 Endangerment

I pretty sure the RD will announce at the racers dinner that slower rider stay far right as possible.  I suggest all should attend the racers dinner.
