Extreme Veteran 596 Worcester, MA | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread tasr - 2010-06-02 5:22 AM AdCo - 2010-06-01 10:08 PM Ok, I made my last post before I 100% caught up. - I absolutely agree that the slower people do need to be aware that the faster people will be coming, especially if you are a faster swimmer than many. That being said, you want to stay as far right as comfortable. After riding the course, - I think I topped out at 43 on open roads, and might be a little faster on closed roads, I felt that I would not feel safe or comfortable riding the white line on almost the entire decent, even in some of the places where you have a dip before the big hills, it is a little sketchy. At 25-35 mph, it is probably fine to be fairly close to the side, but there are some spots that were not great and much above that, I wouldn't want to be there. That is not to say that if I am getting blown by or there is a lot of traffic I wouldn't move over if I could. Yes, it is hard for people going 50+ to see people going slower, but that doesn't mean they would be blameless, neither would the slowpoke weaving back and forth. However, I believe that my riding where I am comfortable at a reasonable pace- reasonable being relative to the road conditions - I would expect that those who have the ability to overtake me also use some common scene when they do. I don't 100% disagree with others, but I don't 100% agree either. I've seen far too many people go for speed over safety and while it is a race, I try to race safe as well, and would hope that others would. If I was riding faster than you and taking cutting the apex of a corner and hit a slower person who was riding on the right side, it would be my fault if I didn't try to avoid him. Accidents do happen, and we should all try to avoid them, even at the loss of speed and time. Of course, I'm the guy who stopped during both his HIM legs to share a tube and CO2. Tell you what just leave me 2 1/2 ft of road between you and the yellow line and I'll be good. Yes I descend at 50+ mph on Keen in aero and non-aero. Perhaps if we all understanding the USAT rules this will help. Attention to 5.5 Endangerment I pretty sure the RD will announce at the racers dinner that slower rider stay far right as possible. I suggest all should attend the racers dinner. Link to USAT RulesDude, you are taking me WAY too literal. I'm NOT saying that the people should be to the left of the 1/2 way point of the lane, sheesh.. I'm saying that the FAR right - RIDING THE WHITE LINE, is bumpy and not the safest place to be if over 25-30.. The difference is maybe 6-8" or in some places a little more. It's that simple. On my ride, going 40's on an open road, I was never "in traffic" so there is room, but the "stay as far right as you possibly can get" isn't advisable either. As the bold above says "as far right as possible." Unsaid should be "as far right as possible and safe." That's it, not trying to cause controversy, not trying to aggravate or (p-off) people, or be a danger. As for the rules, it says don't endanger anyone, it doesn't really give "specifics," as to the bike. If you do endanger someone, other than being an idiot you can be dq'd and should be, etc. edit - took out something I didn't want to say that sounded mean. Edited by AdCo 2010-06-02 7:58 AM |

We will see how that goes after the training camp in a couple of weeks. Dan you ride alot of hills in GA? Yep. Lots of rollers and steady climbing here in the Atlanta area. If I want sustained climbs (couple of miles at a time), I can easily get those too. Most of them around here are big ring/small ring switch type climbs. |

Champion 6962 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Here is my question on the Keene descent. Do we have the entire road going down? At IM MOO, there is a section that is a bombing AND sweeping downhill that we have the entire road and use every inch of it. So is there a "double yellow line" violation potential or do we have the entire road? On race day of course |

On race day of course I honestly can’t remember but I thought last year we had the entire road minus one lane coming up the hill which was coned. Someone confirm.

I thought we only had the right lane and traffic was still coming the opposite direction. But then again, I'm to the right getting passed like crazy so i may not have noticed. |

Extreme Veteran 596 Worcester, MA | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Adco, don't sweat it. I think I understand what you are saying, but we are trying to warn slower newbies that many people will descend at 50 mph. Both years I've done LP, there have been issues where it was very dangerous with slower riders braking in the left part of the road while faster riders struggled to avoid them. I just didn't want anyone to get the wrong ideas here. Peace Peace it is. Yes, saying same thing, just a little differently. |

What is the general consensus. I mean, I know it is all equal at the end, but slideshow the down's don't take as much'e effort as the up. unless I'm doing something wrong. |
