Since I've had IT and issues and shin splits constantly, they looked at my stride.  1st I wasn't hitting the 180 steps per minute and I was landing way to far out front, causing stress to my shins in their  theory????

I have been running forefoot for a few weeks in my old shoes and when I do this, it is like I'm resting, my energy goes down and my speed up, for example try ruynning up a hill forefoot, then hill striking and see which is easier.

I will try those shoes for a few weeks, if they don't work out, I use them for yard work..lol  Those shoes are not true minamilist (can't spell it)  this store is anti minamalist.  Time will tell, will post again later.

thanks for ya'lls feedback

GREAT article Tony, thanks for finding it.

Yeah, that's a problem and causes a lot of stress on your lower legs.  Higher stride rate does really help get your landing under your body.  I was a nasty out front runner when I started, and Jeff had me thinking about running happening behind me.  If you were landing on ice, you wouldn't want to slip forward.

As I've run more frequently and more miles, my stride rate has naturally gone up and my landing has absolutely gone to a more neutral position.  +1 on changing things slowly though.  Your body is used to what you are currently doing, so make changes very gradually.  Good luck.

Hey, one thing which might help is a video of you running on a treadmill, front, side, and rear, at easy pace and 5k pace.  We did this before and it was VERY instructional.

Warren, great idea on video's of running.

OK, now how do I quote.  I wanted to quote Warren and tried but it didn't work.  I can quote a whole thing but how do U get the lines to come down or quote 1 paragraph or something.  See I'm not only swimming, biking and running challenged but computer challenged too...

question for the Junkies.....

What type of running shoes do ya'll run in.  I've been running in Brooks Ghost series and they have a 12 % heel rise.  We have an excellent running shoe store here in town and I told them I wanted to stop doing the heel striking and they recommenced the 8 percent drop to help eliminate heel striking and make the stride more efficient.  They did advise to go slowly as I would probably be a little sore.  He went on to say that I would eventually want to drop to a 4% drop.  So the shoe I got was a Saucony Progrid Ride 5.  It is an 8% heel drop.  They said running is not as technique specific as swimming for the general public but to get good, it is.  thoughts???

I was going to run in them today but it was raining and I just couldn't take a new pair out in the rain so i took my old pair.

Now be honest, how many heel strikers are out there.  Does it really matter? I was watching the olympics and I didn't see any heel strikers.

Karl, I bought a pair of Newtons I think it was in January and I love them there is a 3mm rise and I went out gently the first time i ran with them but had no issues. I will never go back to anything else! I hope you have good luck with your new shoes! Can't wait to hear how they felt for you.

Karl just going to chime in on the shoe/foot landing issue as I've been through all of that. Oh jeez this will take me forever so let me see if I can sum it up for you......

I switched my stride and switched to a low rise shoe. My current running shoes have a 5mm rise I think. I no longer need to wear my custom orthotics and my knees are happier. My feet and ankles still give me trouble though. So, at least for me, it has not been a fix all but a LONG SLOW work in progress.

Good luck. How is your wife doing on the bike?

Tracy, I have been thinking about you, your friends, and their families.  I am still in shock over it, so I can't even begin to imagine how hard it has hit you.

When I'm out on the road, I think of things like this.  I have been reading a running book recently, and it talks about waving to oncoming cars.  I've always done this as a friendly gesture, but the book suggests that it also serves to make sure the driver is aware of your presence.  I know that what happened to Tracy's friends probably could not have been prevented, but now more than ever I'm aware of how important and life saving something so simple could be.  If some of you don't already wave to drivers, perhaps now is a good time to start.

Sounds like a good book.  What is it?

I wave to drivers all the time.  I also flash the peace sign and the sign language "thank you" sign.  Some drivers get the one finger wave (but only after they pass me at a high rate of speed with total disregard for my presence on this beautiful earth).

Tracy I was wondering about the investigation. This is just terrible. It sounds like a story I would hear about on Dateline - unreal.

I also wave Allison. Smile, wave or pull off the road all together for combines or other farm equipment. And I agree, it is as much for me to see that yes, they can see me as it is to be friendly.

I agree, Dina.  I was thinking about that since the day it happened.  (We all knew that the two incidents were connected.  The police just didn't release the info.)

BTW.....one of my friends has been moved to a rehab facility!  Yay!  The other girl is still in the hospital.  It's going to be a long road back, but they are tenacious ladies.

Karl.....I wish I could add my 2 cents.  I just run.  I have a neutral strike.  I am one of those lucky ones that can put on any shoe and run ok.  I don't have any issues.  I'm super conservative when I increase distance, though.  I think that is the key.

In case ya'll didn't know, my son is playing in an advanced league baseball 14 yo to 18 yo (he is 14).  He is probably the best player on the team, they have him playing 2nd base and short stop.

Wife hasn't run, biked or swam (she had gotten a few walks in) in about a 6 weeks due to a cold, then hurt her back. I finally talked her ino getting a massage...she finally got a short run in yesterday...yeah!!!!!

I am so jealous! I just ordered a pair of shoes from the Climb, they did not sound very different from what I've been wearing - I can't even wear them to teach my Toddler Gym class. They hurt my feet so bad. I HATE my feet.

WOW, congratulations to your son! Sounds like a natural.

Hope your wife is feeling better .

We are heading to Branson this weekend since my hubby and son have an extended weekend due to Columbus Day break. We are meeting my sister and family who are living in Oklahoma. We have not seen them for a while so everyone is really excited! Monday I'm going to see a MAT therapist about my back and piriformis issues. She is in St. Louis.  Lately I feel like the whole left side - lower back, hip, piriformis is just shutting down so fingers crossed she can make a little progress with all of this.

I'll be checking in so keep posting and everyone have a great weekend!

Karl glad to hear how good your son is you must be proud of him. You may want to start looking for an agent he sounds like he might have a future in Baseball. Also glad to hear that your wife is feeling better and got out for a run yesterday.

You can count me in the camp of those who have bad feet (or rather, a bad foot.)  Something to do with an odd bone that can get irritated in my right foot.  I used to think this is something new that popped up in the last year or two when I started getting more "serious" about this stuff (tri/running), but then I found a training journal from a few years ago (I was doing random running; I like recording things I guess) and I found I made a similar complaint.  It was very interesting when I discovered this!

Samantha that is actually pretty cool because not only have I been logging everything that I have been doing here on BT since I started the training for my HIM this year but I write all this stuff down as well. I think that sort validates why I am doing this. I want to make sure I have it for future reference you never know when it might come in handy like that.

It's called "Running for Women" by Kara Goucher.

Karl, as for shoes, you really just have to find what works for you- not just what someone tells you is what is right for you.  A lot of running stores have a policy where you can try the shoes out for a certain period of time and return them for any reason during that time period.  I bought a pair of Saucony ProGrid Guide 5s earlier this year because they felt wonderful in the store.  I developed a lot of knee pain after wearing them a couple of times, so I returned them and got a different pair.  That's a much better deal than having to reassign them to lawn shoes.
