Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just a quick check in before my bike ride this morning then I want to catch up with everyone George, I'm a big believer in racing your own race too. It's great to train with people but on race day I have to do my own thing. I'm doing my first 2 HIM this year with the intention of maaaaaaaybe signing up for an Ironman for next year. I want to wait and see if I'm going to break myself first Check in again later. Have a great Saturday everyone! Johanne |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DUNCAN - Good to have you back, and tha's a nice piece of work you did on the 65km ride -- especially in the heat. It turns out that I am a big wuss here, as Jeff and George and others regularly do stuff whn it's scorching outside. I hate being such a big baby! Ahhh, you remember that I am also a big baby when it comes to technology, and even though you give me some credit at being able to deal with Google+ when you say it has "a pretty simple interface"..... Well, here are some things that I see as having simple interfaces: chalk an abacus most fruits topsoil And that just about covers it! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ELLEN - May your Date With Deborah produce something utterly scrumptious. Let me know what you choose, and how it is received! (And the bike ride, too --- I wanna know all about it, okay?) |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JOHANNE - I'm not about to predict that you will want to sign up for an ironman, but I don't hesitate to say that I doubt you will be broken by Vineman. I think you are a wise pacer, and that your ambitious are not unrealistic, and that you're tuned in to your body quite nicely -- all key elements to avoid being broken by a long race. That's not to say that your day won't be long(ish), or that you won't have any doubts about what on earth you're doing, or that you won't swear on a stck of bibles midway through the run that you will nevereverevereevereverebver do one of those things again. There's a good chance that you will experience parts of each of those.....but I'll bet within a day or two of finishing you'll be interested in stepping up to the plate again. FWIW, Brenda, who was an active part of us until tax season (she is a CPA) took her down, is doing Muncie 70.3 TODAY. She might appear here with a report, and I told her that if she was so inclined that info might be of interest to you and Jeff (Branson) and George. So, stay tuned to see if she appears here within the next few days! How long is the ride today, and what's on tap for the coming week --- other than stockpiling your energies, that is?! Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 65 miles done + a 3 mile "run". Nothing in my legs today but it was a late morning start and I saw a bank sign say something about 104 degrees (Fahrenheit) so maybe that is why. Walked allot on my little brick run felt crampy early. Glad it is over ![]() |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My bike ride was great. It was a wonderful weather day and I rode fast and slow when I wanted. I am going to make braised chard with cilantro since I have all the ingredients. I am growing cilantro on the deck. I wan overcome by ugly green worms in the parsley and now I am at war. I have been biking so much lately that 2 fingers of my left hand are numb and won't repair themselves. I know it is from leaning on a nerve but it is hard to ride and not press on that nerve. I guess I will never be a concert pianist. That was my dream. I was going to start lessons next week since at the moment I can play chopsticks and that's about it. Another career down...oh well. Off top the kitchen. Ellen |

I use Bacillus thurengenisis on tomato worms, it';s considered organic, safe around other animals, also called BT, garden centers will have it-cheap too. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds like everyone has been busy... I went and picked up my race packet for tomorrow. Number 656... wave #3 out of 6 (not bad, I was worried I would be in the last wave..) Time to rest and relax.. 330 am is going to be really early wake up.... Alex |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ALEX - Hey! A palindromic number! Those are always good! Also good is a middle wave, so enjoy that, too. And, of course, enjoy the early wake-up. Remember (and I'm being serious here) that the night before the night before is the key sleep night. So, I hope you had a decent sleep last night, which is the one that counts! Looking forward to your report, as always. Have a fine time! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JEEF - Epic effort at running after 65 miles in ~104F. In those conditions, fetal position suits me best! Smart awareness, and stopping as you sensed was necessary. I guess that goes with the turf of training in your challenging summertime climate zone, eh? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ELLEN - I'm glad Jeff ahd some advice to you about the numbness, as I wasn't sure what to say. I guess I'm also glad he had a strategy for the green worms. You know, he might be the person who pens the words of wisdom in "Hints From Heloise". You think? I'm very pleased for you that you had a fun ride -- even with just eight functional fingers. I'm sorry, however, that the concert pianist future seems lost. It might be time to take up harmonica, and to this end I can teach you all I know about blues playing when I'm down there for Nations. I have no innate musical abilities, but managed to beat playing blues harp into me over the years. Really, nothing musical comes easily to me at all. Oh, woe! Finally, I hope the chard and cilantro wes deemed yummilicious by the carnivores in your midst! |

Smart awareness, and stopping as you sensed was necessary. I guess that goes with the turf of training in your challenging summertime climate zone, eh? I guess you just adapt, like Yankees and Canadians adapting to crazy cold and wet. The heat deserves respect, this weekend I lost my 4 year-old buck (rabbit) and one hen, both presumably to heat. No apparent trauma-just dead. I had killed a chicken snake that was stealing eggs, but I doubt even if there was more that they could have harmed an adult hen. I noticed that the dogs on my route seemed less interested in the chase, just some half hearted barking and short little runs then retreating back to the shade-dogs are perhaps smarted than cyclists. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a fun race today. Not sure of times or placement but felt good for most of the race. I am pretty sure that I finished quite a few minutes under 2 hours, which makes me very pleased as both of my other full races have been at the 2 hour mark or about there. I will write a full race report and post it once I have a nap... 3 am is just very early for me, though I do feel like I am becoming more of a morning person after starting this process. Hope everyone has had a great weekend! Alex |

Steve, I agree, I probably won't break doing Vineman. I'm starting to get excited. I've had a couple of really good workouts and that always helps to boost the confidence I follow Brenda on Facebook too and she did great! I'm looking forward to her race report. Yesterdays ride was 2 1/2 hours and we got in 37.73 miles of good rollers and a big uphill close to the end of the ride which simulates Vineman. Then we (I say we because Dave worked out with me) did a 15 min brick run. I averaged an 8:50 pace which is fast for me. Today I did a 4 mile run and averaged 9:40 pace. My shorter distances are getting faster which is really encouraging. This week I have short workouts. An hour spin on the bike, a 30 min run, swim, that sort of thing and a rest day! ...and yes, I'm more then likely going to sign up for an IM next year. Dave and I are volunteering at IMAZ in November and then cheering my niece on during the race. I'll get priority registration first thing the next morning Johanne |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ellen, the only thing I can do with chopsticks is eat with them so at least you has a dream of being a concert pianist Jeff, great job on your ride. I'm curious, do you take any salt tablets or that sort of thing with the summers you guys have? Sorry about your buck and chicken. Heats tricky with rabbits but I guess chickens are affected too Alex, great job on your race! Looking forward to the report. I'm on official taper Johanne |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have never bothered with salt tablets, In fact, I don't think I had even heard of them until I came on BT. I don't suffer cramps very often. I do eat allot of salt with meals and cooking and I rely on Gatorade. Back "in the day" as they say, I would use aspirin to hold off cramps when I did 24 hour races. Enjoy your taper, and good luck |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ALEX - Good stuff, it's great to hear you so pleaded with the day's happening. I will go and ook for results in a while, buit our computer is very stodgy right now, so i will be limited in my patience. i might jusyt have to wait for you full report. And it's good that you're becoming more of a morning person, and once your working-out-body can't easily tell the difference between 4 a.m. and 4 p.m., you've crossed some wonderful threshold. Enjoy! ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JEFF - Sorry to hear about your "livestock" losses, and even though the usual predatory mutts are disinterested in you, that's probably no real compensation. Do you usually suffer a few loses in the heat of summer? I too have never been a pure salt tablet person. I do so like my electrolytes when the heat and/or distances are elevated, but I guess I lean more towards the theory that we have enough salt in our bodies for anything less than the very extreme. I have had issues with cramoing before, though, most notably in '07, I think it was, when I would frequently get nasty cramps in my left calf during races. Fortunately, that hasn't plagued me much since then. Another theory I subscribe to is that magnesium is more impostrant for cramp-prevention than sodium, so I aim for drinks and gels that have a nice littel hit of magnesium. But there is so much contoversy about all of this stuff that I'm not sure who to believe, really. I used to think of myself as just a normal sweater, but my Yoga experience shows me to be fairly heavy. I'm always surprised how much I sweat compared to most others, and wonder what's up with that. i am NOT one of those people who, during runs, leaves big salt streaks and stains on the running clothes. but maybe that says more about my natural-born sodium levels and how well I hydrate, than it reflects on sweating. I dunno. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JOHANNE - REALLY nice weekend of work, just about perfect a week out from Vineman. Condtras on being so smart about it --- and for nailing down that 8:50 pace on the brick run. That's GOTTA be a confidence-builder, yes? ![]() ![]() ![]() Amd, keep that resolve to keep things short this week -- do not succumb to the nag-talk that;'s trying to tell you more, more MORE!!! You've done the work, the fitness is banked, and the only need for the short stuff is to keep you sharp and loose. The countdown happily intensifies!! |

I dunno. It happens, in summers past I had "iced" them by putting frozen 1 litre bottles of water in their cages, also I try to keep the shades down (old towels) and I soak these towels with water when I can. This year I haven't put the amount of time and attention to my rabbits, they haven't been productive either and I have considered giving up on them for the time being. Tri stuff has interfered with my little hobby farm. I may just butcher and eat my remaining doe and give it a rest for a while. The chickens still lay eggs, I will get some fresh chicks next spring |

Condtras on being so smart about it --- and for nailing down that 8:50 pace on the brick run. That's GOTTA be a confidence-builder, yes? ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks! I felt good about the run. I would love to maintain that pace for longer then 4 miles! I never could of imagined I could do 4 miles of it at that pace so I'm hopeful my speed will stay when I do some of the longer runs. I'll be good about sticking to my plan for this week. I want to be rested and ready to go. There is a possibility that the swim might not be wetsuit legal so that could get interesting. I've heard that they will sometimes release water the day before to cool it down so they don't have to deal with too many floundering triathlethes. We'll see how that goes. Johanne |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just saw our local news, the water temperature at Texoma is 83 degrees, 5 ft below normal. That is actually warmer than my local pool. I squeezed in a 12 mile run tonight, ice bath was a failure, tap water was tepid and the ice bottles I had floating in there with me didn't seem to have much effect. We have had 15 days over 100 and 10 days in a row. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mossman Race Report Overall 515 / 564 Total Time: 01:43:38.743 Swim 00:18:21.601 Pace 02:09.6 min/100yds While I didn’t “place” well, I am pretty happy with this race. The swim and bike I think went very well. The run of course is still my weakest link. Swim – I was in the 3rd wave, it was strange how they did the waves, the elite went out in the first wave but then it was the older men, followed by my group, then under 40 men, then under 40 women then the relays… This made for a very crowded swim… I caught some people from the wave in front of me and was caught by a lot of people from the wave behind me… it was very strange. I only really stopped twice to get my bearings, this is a huge improvement. I think because the buoys were on my right that made things a bit easier for me. Overall a 2:09 pace is pretty normal for me and is what I average in the pool so I feel pretty good about it. T1 – SLOW – have problems with my wetsuit again and getting my socks on! Bike – I thought I did pretty well here… there wasn’t any flat tires that I saw to help with so I was totally focused on getting a good time. It was a very flat course, with only 2 hills, one short steep hill and the other more of a long gradual hill. My 17.9 mph feels great! Because the bike course was 2 laps I don’t really have a sense as to how many people I passed or how many passed me, but it was a blast… Need to drink more on the bike T2 – This was OK, had to stop and drink water as I didn’t drink enough on the bike so that added a few seconds.. but overall it was ok. Run – This is my worst leg… I am just slow… my knee held up ok, but forced me to walk frequently. I believe that the 38:43 is an improvement over my last 5k so maybe there is hope! They didn’t have enough water on the run course. Only one water station at about the 1.25 mile mark, I may need to figure out if I should carry water with me… |
