That's awesome!

Sorry for dropping off the radar. I had to finish up my thesis and had the additional pressure of dropping 18lbs in a week for my USMC weigh-ins. Crazy. Most of it was water weight and starvation. Unhealthy, but effective in an emergency.

Challenge to my fellow Aardvark's.

Go into the Introduce Yourself forum and welcome at least three people.  I like to pick those that no one has responded to yet and remember we were all in their shoes at one point.

That made me oddly nervous. But challenge accepted!

Nice job you guys.  I am really glad to see you guys getting involved.  Feel free to invite any of the new people to join us.  I kind of wanted to keep the group at about 10-12 people, but since we have only about half of what we started with, we could take on a few more.

Great Idea Josh, I was thinking about that, but did not want to voluntary your Mentor time without checking with you.  Hell if each of use that are active got one it still would only put us around 10 plus you.

Ok, another challenge for those Aardvark's that are still active, and those who haven't been to get going again.

May is increase your distance in each discipline month.  I'm not saying you have to double it or go crazy, just show an increase of some distance in each of the three disciplines.

I like it. My distances will increase next month fore sure, just because of my race schedule.

My new daughter, Gemma Rose was born today. 6lbs 7oz, 18.5inches tall. I probably wont be good contender in the May challenge. But I do like the idea.

April's totals:
Bike:21h 48m 55s  - 360.34 KM
Run:12h 32m 58s  - 137.21 KM
Swim:9h 00m  - 21600 M

A big month for me - a few weeks out from HIM and 4wks into IM training plan. Distance on bike is low as not logged trainer miles but time is accurate!

Challenge Accepted for May!!

Congrats Dad, you enjoy your new baby girlInnocent, help your wife, and try to get sleep when you can.  Triathlons are not going anywhere and training can resume at a later datel.  Be a good father and husband first, which I'm sure you will be.  Congrats again.

Hey guys,

I’m looking ahead in my training plan to try and figure out how to best approach the HIM distance race and the recovery around it. Unfortunately the race falls in the middle of a big build period on my IM training plan. Bear in mind that the IM distance race is a priority for me. The half is a bench mark and a race I signed up to to keep me focused over the winter. But I’d also like to do reasonably OK!

The schedule looks like this:

Mon:     Swim 75mins, Bike 90mins

Tue:      Run 60, Bike 90

Wed:     OFF

Thur:     Run 100, Swim 60

Fri:        Swim 90

Sat:       Bike 180, Run 30  - --- RACE DAY

Sun:      Swim 30, Run 45

Mon:     Swim 100

Tue:      Bike 120, Run 50

Wed:     Bike 90

Thur:     Swim 60, Run 120

Fri:        Swim 55

Sat:       Bike 180, Run 30

Sun:      Bike 60, Run 60

How would you taper and recover around it to maximise the race but not have a big impact on the IM training?

Sorry for the long post and all the detail!

This is my suggestion, and how I would handle it.  I would stay off on Wed, then cut the Thurs workout in half, then do about a 15-20 minute swim, and a 15 minute fast ride on Friday (in the morning)  Take off on Sunday, then back on the shedule again on Monday.

That is about what I normally do, and it seems to work well for me.  You don't really need much recover from a 70.3 if you are building to a 140.6, and you dont really want to waste much training on a big long taper, so this should do the trick for you.

Hope this helps.

JK

Cheers Josh, that sounds good, just hope my legs recover quick enough!

The other option I though of this morning was that the following week (after whats shown above) is a recovery week - what if i took that early after the race and then did a longer block after that? Or am I asking for trouble by increasing the duration of the heavier volume weeks without a break?

I was thinking the same as Josh leading into the race. As far as after the race, you will know how you feel and can decide your best course of action at that point after enjoying your accomplishment and drinking a pint or whatever y'all call it.

grahamclarke_6 - 2013-05-03 4:33 PM cheers - is the new Avatar a reflection of the Z2 training?!!!!Wink

Gave me a good laugh, and partially true.  I signed up to be a Mentor for the next few months for pure beginners looking to complete their first sprint, 5k, 10k, or whatever goal they set.  I named it Todd's Tri Turtles because I wanted to encourage all to feel comfortable with their fitness level and speed.  I am not fast but like the turtle I will get where I am going, no matter how long it takes and with Z2/3 it takes a whileTongue out

Also, I have had a really good past couple of days, Last night the family participated in our County's Relay for Life, in which I walked a mile with the family and then completed just shy of 7 miles non-stop mostly in Z3.  This relay really makes me think of those who truly suffer and brings me back to realizing that my complaints, minor pains, and worries are basically foolish and petty.  So many have died and suffered at the hands of cancer (wife lost her mother when she was 22 and before we were married) and it just makes me thank God that we are currently healthy.

I felt good today so I went out this afternoon and put in an easy 17.31 mile ride, but did not get to go by HR becuase it was not reading properly (showed 242 at one point and I was not even breathing hard).

Sorry for the Lengthy post and I hope everyone is having a great weekend as well.

Hello everyone. Still here. Strained my calf on Wed., but still did the race. Don't know why I keep hurting myself one week prior to all my races. Actually I do know why this time. LOL! Tried using the incline on the treadmill for the first time Wednesday and kept my finger on the button a little too long. The tri was in a hilly area of Louisiana so it was a little different but I did it!!! It was a 1000 yd swim, 18 mile bike, and a 4 mile run. Finished it in 2:07. Had to walk run because of the calf but still finished. Hope everyone is doing great. Been really busy as of late. Good luck to all. Take care.

Thanks. It was my second tri and first time I was in a mass start. It was crazy for the first 200 yards. Got through it though.
