Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread rstocks3 - 2009-06-27 9:11 PM gj50 - 2009-06-27 4:13 PM What is it..... 11 weeks out now!!! How crazy!!! But all of a sudden I get an injury....now what!! I was out on my long ride, and noticed my seat was little different, didn't stop just kept going and well don't you know it....my IT band locked at the end of the ride...now I can't even bend my knee.... AAAAHHHH its been two days...I have taken it easy, nothing yesterday and today I did spin a little and it was ok...still really really tight... Just really down and out right now.... any ideas..... I'm going to go a different direction than the roller and stretching based on my experience with ITBS myself. A brief history - in 2007, training for my first IM, I was having some lateral knee pain after a lot of my runs. I went to a PT and he determined it was my ITB and did some ultrasound, stretching and foam roller stuff and after a couple weeks of not improving any I spoke to a radiologist I work with who is an avid marathoner. He explained that the foam roller, stretching, ice, etc is all good for a healthy ITB that has some minor inflammation from a hard run or workout. If your ITB is actually damaged to where you are feeling it on every run or it's limiting your ability to perform then REST IS THE ONLY THING THAT WILL HELP. Muscles, tendons and ligaments repair themselves by the body increasing the blood flow to the affected area. (The body is very good at repairing itself if you can let it do it's job!) Ice decreases blood flow and therefore inhibits the body from healing. Stretching or using a foam roller on an injured ITB only irritates the tissue that the body is trying to repair. REST allows the body to mend the ITB so you can go play again. After 2 weeks of a lot more biking he told me to go for a short run. If I didn't feel any pain after a mile or two finish a short run and start to build up from there. If I felt any pain in the ITB at all after a mile or two then stop and take another week off from running. It sounds like a lot but I didn't have any pain after the two weeks and have had absolutely no ITB problems since. Good luck and I hope this helps. I told him "tomorrow is my rest day, will that be enough?" He had me take 2 weeks COMPLETELY OFF RUNNING but said that if biking doesn't bother it, which it didn't at all, then increase your biking miles and swimming for 2 weeks. You're totally right Bob, I had acute ITBS that required an 8 week break from running and PT 2x/week with home PT every day to beat it. That's why I said if it isn't acute or damaged, stretching and rolling is the key to keeping it from getting worse. I wish I'd known then what that knee pain meant because I would have stopped running immediately, but I damaged it so badly it still bugs me three years later so I have to do the stretches daily still. And I couldn't agree more on the "little pain" theory with this or PF. PF knocked me out for a solid 4 months, it is ugly and chronic. If you think you have either of these conditions creeping up, get it checked out immediately or the road to recovery is a long one that usually doesn't include training. |

Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread I just got home from a 9 day training trip to Madison, it was just perfect. Getting to ride the course, swim in the (algae-infested) lake and run a loop made me so much more excited for race day. I'm jealous of those who can train on the course regularly, but I'm glad I had the chance to do it. I also got to log my biggest training week ever: S: 11440.20 Yd 3h 43m 15s B: 221.93 Mi 14h 22m 48s R: 30.33 Mi 4h 31m 02s How's everyone else's training going? |

I have chronic ITBS problems and have worked with a PT to come up with a stretch and release program so that I can be doing something as crazy as Ironman. Give it a little time, but do what someone else said and inflict a little pain on yourself. A little bit of pain will make it feel a lot better later! I really have to disagree with the "little bit of pain" theory in this case. ITBS and Plantar Faciaitis are two injuries that have kept runners out for months or sometimes years if they try to "push through the pain" Okay I see my comment was misunderstood. I meant when rolling your IT band out, a little bit of pain when rolling makes if feel a lot better later. Not going out and running through it. My original struggle with it kept me from running for 3 months. I couldn't push through that pain. |

Master 2621 Almaden Valley, San Jose, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Okay, If can figure out a way to cut and past my past few rides, I'd like to do so for an opinion check from all of you pros. I did 80 miles, mainly rollers yesterday. Last saturday, I did 100 miles, more climbs. i'm looking for opinions from the moo experts as to where I'm at in this process! Can anyone tell me how to post the actually garmin data? graphs? I publish to my training log, but that doesn't give all the details and such..... thanks, Linda edit: I climbed about 6500 feet yesterday in those 80 miles. Last weeks garmin was way off, unless I'm a goddess and climbed 18000 in 100 miles! Edited by velcromom 2009-06-29 2:29 AM |

I jealous of all you donkeys out there who are able to ride the course as part of training! I can't wait to get back there in September!! I've been able to get one century in this year so far and will be doing my second century in a few weeks tied in between a 2.4 mi swim and a marathon in sunny Lake Placid. I hope to get a few more in between Placid and MOO! |
